Rule of thumb: if they tell you that you can work anywhere while studying, just know it's a very useless course. 24 Likes 5 Shares

If I mention them, you will think I'm going haywire but I'm somewhat correct The courses are... Medicine and Surgery Pharmacy Law Engineering (especially Mechanical) Computer Science Note: the question said in Nigeria And some others that I can't remember now. Those courses eh, you will think after graduation, money will be flowing because to many studying those course they think they are always sought after , the labour market is entirely a different story especially here in Nigeria, without connection or enough capital to start up for yourself, you will just be seeing yourself jumping from one office to the other looking for the firm or company that will at least top even 2k to your current salary so that you will move 😂 62 Likes 4 Shares |

The choice of what you study should be propelled by your life’s passion, purpose, and assignments. Studying a course because that is what is obtainable and available is a recipe for frustration and depression. Getting a good job at graduation should be the least in your choice of a course. 20 Likes 4 Shares |

Studying law in a lawless country like Nigeria is a waste of time and resources Mass communication as well, with the advent of mobile phones and cheap internet connection, anyone can break a news even before media houses get the gist, people without any prior journalistic training Infact as it is now, formal education is gradually declining, people can now learn skills, earn certificates within a short period of time, profitable skills and certificate without being in a conventional education system 71 Likes 4 Shares |

It is useless because you are taught but not educated. Most of what we are taught is to think like a worker, so when someone says they study Accounting we expect Accountant, Banking for Bankers, Botany for Botanists. We don't observe that the world is changing and the University was built for the past. It is to give you knowledge, you make out of it what it gives you. You will think sociology is a useless course until you are made a Manager of people at work and you understand why man is a social animal. You will think psychology is only for Yaba left until you see that social media addiction, therapy and so many more is a global problem. Keep learning. No one would have thought seeing a therapist will be necessary now but look at how time changed because of social media addiction amd technology. We have outdated syllabus I agree but look at them as foundations, then keep learning. FORTRAN was used in the past but you will be surprised it is used in some advanced countries Just keep studying and don t let the certificate put a full stop on you. Why do you think some of these our politicians go to study law, have you asked why 19 Likes

Some courses ought to be scraped in Nigeria. NUC/NBTE and Ministry of Education ought to revisit our tertiary education curriculum and remove a lot of outdated courses from there and replace them with current trends that can produce graduates that will solve current global challenges. 36 Likes 5 Shares |

Lol... most of you naming MBBS are ignorant. Lol MBBS and Pharmacy useless? Looooolest, loud and nescient people just plenty for nairaland sha. Course wey be say house officers (housmanship students undergoing the one year internship —equivalent to IT) dey earn at least 250k—students who are yet to even serve o. I reside in a medical environment and some of our last batch graduating students didn't even wait for their induction before Oyinbo land scoop them, yet Unilag CMD was at UITH induction last year begging them to wait behind. Absolutely all of our graduated medical students, na work dey chase them. Make una dey play o. You think say na Yahoo Maduka do build tallest university/build for the whole Igboland? The medical field is quite assuring from my experience: Pharmacy, MLS, Nursing are all lit and indispensable, with fair Nigerian-standard incomes and values. Physiotherapy, Radiology, and Dentistry are not excluded. I know less of Optometry. NB: This is an addendum posed to jambites with hopes for medicine but confused. Look, forget yahoo, crime, and all those ill-advices you come across, I swear the medical field is a field that pays! You will be associated with relevance. However, body go tell you, as you have a massive price to pay o—your mental and physical health will be put to test, especially if you use a federal university, which I strongly recommend. Inadequate social life, down times, weak background... Due to its rigour, many people withdrew, but many more scaled through and graduated and are close to fulfillment in life. If you have affinity for studying, follow through, your life is paved. In conclusion, if you can wield a strong coping mechanism, you're seriously fit for a medical school, and your future is satisfactorily secured. Shalom. 47 Likes 1 Share |

To buttress the points of Frsnchasofficia, my Yoruba people, if you're in the Art/Commercial departments, don't slack on language courses like German, Spanish, Mandarin, and Hindi. Study diploma in them, understand them well using Duolingo or so, be fluent and become relevant. The first two can take you overseas easily and but the last two! Oluwa o! Those Asian expatriates will be flocking around you like flies, with good pay like some I know. Note: I believe you understand English well enough to be able to serve duly as a translator. Igbo people, I know say una go still come here tomorrow con abuse and bash us. Make una sha take advantage too o... God go judge una bad mouth and behaviour, because I no know why una go just hate people wey no get your time or hate you, in fact, their land dey bless you. 3 Likes 1 Share |

The rest of you in other courses, sha strive to achieve first class in your courses, second class upper at worst, then you still stand some chances. However, it's important to arm yourself with other artisan knowledge that can fetch you a comfortable future. Pick Software engineering or Data science on the sides. Learn trade from the Igbos, if dem go teach you —the part where you can import from overseas especially. Learn how to fix technical stuffs like MRI machines, ATM machines, bank doors and so on. Don't dull, don't be lazy, don't do scam, don't marry or impregnate when you're not comfortable (if konji hold you, hold am back, if not, soapy and face front). Know what you must know well and be patient. The sky is wide for everyone. Walahi, options still dey, na you dey zuzu. Hopefully, leaders wey better pass Tinubu make sky clearer. Goodluck, compatriots. 10 Likes |

So far Nigeria is concerned, all courses in Nigerian universities are useless and useful at the same time. Useless when you don't have a godfather/godmother. Useful when you have a godfather/godmother. I read where some people in this thread includes sociology as one of the useless courses to study. They're right, especially holding to how sociologists are being treated in Nigeria; but honestly, asked anybody that's outside the shores of Nigeria what sociology is. Have you wondered why in USA and India sociology is compulsory for everyone? I studied Sociology and Anthropology, and I am glad today that I did. Though when I was in Nigeria I was skeptical, but I later had the opportunity of traveling out of the country and that was when I realized that sociologists are really sort after in USA. US are more concerned in solving societal problems, notably, gun violence and drugs, social problems like unemployment, poverty, Racism , and how to continously maintain their economy. I didn't stress, I got two jobs simultaneously and I had the option of choosing the one that was so favourable. However, this is someone that graduated with 2.2 in sociology and Anthropology, which I regretted now , atleast I should have made a 2.1. Back in Nigeria, I lost all the vibes to study this course because of listening to what people were saying, that sociology won't fetch me anything hence I came out with 2.2, because I was like , why will I stress myself to study a course like sociology and Anthropology, and today, i am ashamed of myself and I hate myself for listening to what people were saying. If you're studying sociology, please don't make the mistake I made while In school. Study hard and come out with good result atleast minimum 2.2, but mostly opt for first class or 2.1. If you have it in mind to travel overseas, study courses like: Medicine Psychology Sociology and Anthropology/Social works Guidance and counseling Gerontology ( with a diploma in sociology) Nursing 13 Likes |

bolu96: Na ignorance. Problem is most Nigerian students who are studying Psychology, is more of wetin man for do, it was never their first choice because of Jamb score and fear of staying at home, one more year. Hence many would graduate and begin to ask the dumb question of what they can do with their degree certificate because they only went through the montions of lectures, copy and paste, cramming etc, never internalized nor stretched their minds For those serious Psychology graduates in Nigeria, they are many opportunities for them if they are smart. For example, with their knowledge of how the human mind works, they can do some online certifications in memory training to become a memory training coach. We have so many Nigerian parents worried that their children are struggling with remembering what they are taught in school......that is where a memory trainer comes in, with the skills learnt he/she can twice a week offer online video sessions with such young ones and help them redirect how they learn, to become better in understanding and remembering what has been taught....this is evidence based. Shebi so many of our young ones are comfortably doing drugs, are becoming alcoholics, doing crazy things on social media...in the coming years many rehabilitation centres will be springing up as it is now and we need those who are skilled in mental health as workers. They should hone their skills in therapy, Nigerians need professionals not social media influencers who claim to be therapists. My background in Psychology made me a Neurodevelopmental Assessment Practitioner, I use laptops, softwares, cameras to assess young ones for ADHD (Attention Deficiency Hyperactive Disorder) a mix of Psychology and IT. The field has so many pathways for those who truly have the passion. 9 Likes |
