I'm not surprised by this question coming from a fellow sociologist.Practically, sociology is a versatile course because of the various spheres of human endeavours ranging from politics, education, work & occupation, health, law, religion etc. in Nigeria,a sociologist can work virtually every where but to be specific; As human resource officer, counselling, social worker, health practitioner(under medical sociology),para-military formations, lecturing and so many others. But the fact is,sociologists makes bigger money overseas compared to Nigeria.ENJOY YOUR COURSE WHILE IT LAST.

Just Statistics... I had A in them so you can too. One good thing about Sociology is that you can virtually move into another field in the arts and social sciences and business admin from there without any discrimination. It's a base course that serves as a foundation to build whatever you want to major in upon.

After sociology you can go into accounting, medicine, health, statistician, psychologist, politics, communication, strategist, theorist etc.

Sociology you virtually can work anywhere degree in sociology can land you job as
Actuarial analysts
Housing manager/officer
Human resources officer
Probation officer
Public relations officer
para military organisation (criminologists)
civil service
medical sociology lot more

Just get ready to be versatile, because the course itself it versatile.

currently studying sociology trust me I haven't regret for onces studying the course, maybe ones because I had to do math but now bye bye to math ready for statistics. Trust me most sociology student don't like maths But that doesn't stop us from performing well. Just get ready to interact with people and apply lot of sociology theories to solve problem in the societies.

Msc in criminology/Health won't be bad for me when the time comes

Nice question from you, and very good answers from "fabraham" and "Nobody." Am a graduate of Sociology from the UniPort, and I must say I asked myself same question during my undergraduate days. To add a little, Sociology is a very versatile/wide discipline that's why some call it the "Jack of all trades" (i.e. it studies many things and none in particular especially at the undergraduate level). It never used to be a "valued/popular" course in Africa due to ignorance and OVER-valuing of the so-called physical sciences/professional courses; but recently it is a HOT CAKE as many are beginning to know and appreciate its value. A sociology graduate can work ANYWHERE: in the hospital, security agencies/lawcourt (as a CRIMINOLOGist), school, administrative office (as it is all about BUREAUCRACY as theorized by sociologist Max Weber), in the Ministry of Sports and CULTURE, a politician/political analyst (as a grounded MARXist/political-economist), mass media, researcher etc. With Feminism or Gender Studies (which are under Sociology), one can work at the Ministry of Gender/Women Affairs; my step-mum and maternal aunt works there (in Bayelsa State) and they encouraged me back then to take my course very serious as they pay "special salary" to those with Sociology degrees. My younger step-brother and uncle are also currently studying Sociology at the NDU, Bayelsa State.

Unfortunately, many sociologists are still not well-paid in Africa (Nigeria) compared to their colleagues in Europe/America. As of 2010, the average sociologist in the USA alone earned at least $34,000 yearly (currently equivalent to about N9,52000 - "9 million, 52 thousand naira"wink, while in Nigeria the average sociology graduate with a B.Sc earns N840,000 yearly (depending on where she/works). The average professor of Sociology in the USA earns $72,000 yearly, while in Nigeria the average professor of Sociology earns about N4.8 million yearly. Too bad. http://degreeinsociology.net/earning-potential-with-a-sociology-degree/

I hope to do my M.Sc in either Criminology or Development Studies, but I wish I/my family have the money/scholarship opportunity to do it in Europe or America because our educational system here is too corrupt and frustrating. I made a very good result.

@Poster, I personally think it depends on what you want to do with your life.

If you want to be a professional, obviously you should lean towards that. If you want to run a business, then you can study any course and get away with it but make sure you start that business while in school, latest during your final/service year, to garner plenty experience before the real world/reality dawns on you.

I also studied sociology and I work with one of the best and most profitable banks in Nigeria. Apparently, course of study didn't set me back. And im sure it wouldn't set you back too. It's what you have in you that matters at the end of the day.

To add to what other colleagues said. Sociology is wide with diff specializations. Like d person that asked about medical sociology, if u find yourself in dat specialization, then u shud be very prepared for NGO related activities in pulblic health particularly with health promotion, education and communication, to which Medical Sociology is an aspect of. In industrial relation, you are also qualified when u specialize in industrial sociology. Sociology is about interraction of persons. Its a social process that deals with human relation and how they interact with their respective environment. At embassies, we re highy needed, along with sevreral other agencies/parastatals. You will. Appreciate it better when you go for your postgraduate studies and learn more about various specialization

First advice will be try to come out with a leas a 2:1.
You could further your degree and get back into acafemics.

Also you must understand many organisations unless professional roles - technical or specialised recruitments.
Most coys look for graduates with at least a degree and a good grade and they train thwm.

Most Audit firms PwC, KPMG and the likes. , Banks and even multinationals.

You could also decide to do a master in Human Resource or get professional certifications in HR.

Sociology and HR go well. The options are limitless.

JUSY STUDY HARD AND GET AT LEAST A SECOND CLASS UPPER.

This gives you a leverage at the least.

I will ADVICE u to desist from studying such.

Go and sell ur Father's land or any tangible property and secure admission to study MEDICINE or better still study abroad.
U don't need to ask about the fate of SOCIOLOGY.
Just look around you, u will see mayhem, bedeviling the nation.

JUST TRY TO MAKE A 2.1.
WITH A LITTLE BIT OF LUCK, YOU WILL END UP IN A BANK AND WORK FOR 15 YEARS BEFORE MAKING IT TO MANAGERIAL POSITION
