I wont even go into banking. I would rather start my own business (which i must have passion for) and grow it into an empire. If u put in half the passion and zeal which u put in the bank into your dream business, the sky will be your beginning.

Personally, I think it all boils down to what I wanna achieve and the means I utilise in order to achieve those things. Unfortunately, many of our banker folk trade the sacrifice of time and pleasure they make while working, buying exotic cars that are more liabilities instead of saving and investing. The key is not just planning your retirement immediately you receive your appointment letter but, not losing focus of ur destination and what you want to achieve while planning.

I have never one day regretting leaving the banking Job since 2010...although things are very though then but as an aggressive man for passion to succeed i find myself back to the normal track...Having enough times go for more studies,to think for myself without anybody intimidating me because of unrealistic targets....please friends if you are still in the banking system it is high time you had another plan before the system drop you or you drop the system.

I do pity bankers a lot, they must have one of the most boring life, always in the bank attending to those crowds everyday, some even work 247. Kai no time to flex ur life. Seriously it pays to be the ceo.

For me and my friend. We left school at the same time, served same time, wrote bank test/interview at the same time, joined the bank at the same time, planned our exit time immediately after joining ( at least 2 years after joining ) , left for the UK to study but we sha suffer and struggle no be small, pray, plan and returned the same time, secured job with oil firms the same year, earning at least 3x what bank was paying us then.

Secret - Pray, plan and strategize well. SAVE OOOOOOOOOO ( back then people called me stingy person because they expect me to be buying them beer every weekend, colleagues then where collecting loans then to buy car, marry etc ). 3 months after we left almost every body was sacked in the branch and the branch is now more like a cash centre.

Our story is almost the same except for the fact that i started with my friend in a small indigenous oil servicing coy with a meagre pay. My friend left he could not withstand it. Got a job in a new generation bank. I wanted to leave but I asked my self. Is that going to be the end of all the sleepless nights studying Mech Eng in the University, I pursued my dream, added more values to myself in terms of experience and left from that servicing coy to a bigger one then to an American Oil servicing. Today I have no regrets turning down the banking job offers. The truth has been told by some posters already. Save like tomorrow is your last day and plan your exit from the day you got your letter.

my dear. banking job is the beginning of your woes if you dont plan once you got the job. I have many friends who are ex bankers , some are doing well while some are still struggling to survive.
lemme tell you one reason while some are still struggling to survive outside the banking job. Once you have saved alot of money to quit your slave job, when you are out, a lot of advices and proposals will come your way through friends you made while in the system. if you are interested in the business, go into details, i mean go into DETAILS, no matter how lucrative the proposal is, do not fail to go into details. DO NOT RUSH INTO IMPORTATION, if you must import, go inside the market, learn the business at least 6months, rent a shop, buy from local importers first, then after 2 or 3 times of buying from the local importers then you can plan on importing your own goods.
So many of exbankers got trapped by importing goods which they dont know about and their money got trapped too.
REMEMBER TO RENT A SHOP AND START FROM DETAILS IF YOU ARE INTERESTED IN BUSINESS.

Very insightful indeed!

The advice goes to everyone doing a job they don't like. Unemployment is imminent in Nigeria. So anybody can start their career anywhere.

But from day one, have a plan for your exit. Don't just rest on your oars on a job you don't get fulfilment from.

Some people love banking and they're down with it.

If you know you don't wanna be in banking forever, a 50k suit is not your priority...for instance.

HAVE A PLAN AND WORK TOWARDS IT!

Working in the bank is only an opportunity to start another career.

There is nothing like being an entrepreneur

Thank you so much for this advise maryjames9.... I just got diamond bank job and I plan on staying for just 5 years and I want to maximize my time. I will surely heed this.thanks once again
maryjames9: Good one. Many only learn the hard way cos the salary as a banker makes one so relaxed like tomorrow will never come. Banking is a good profession cos you learn many things there. My advice to bankers is this. Try to learn all you could not only in your department but others, save a significant sum every month 4rm ur salary and keep saving for the next economic meltdown. Unfortunately, many always say "i reject it in Jesus Name" or exercise faith when they get bank job. I have seen people testify in church that they were not fired among many colleagues only for their sack letter 2 get to them following week. Take a loan, i mean a significant amount 4rm bank and buy plots of land somewhere. Real estate is good 4 you people cos it requires little attention cos when the "chips are down" you have something. Dont take loan 2 buy cars,do big wedding parties, get luxurious duplex in lekki, travel to london for 1 month leave. Be shrewd in investing cos nothing is forever. Above all, plan your exit as you get your appointment letter.

Very true, I have senior colleagues in my bank who have not been promoted in the past 12yaears. The thing is banking puts you in a box and if you are not courageous you will not leave that box. Until they boot you out to face reality.

GentleMimi: And who are these ret*ards typing ''fullstops''.If you've got nofin meaningful to contribute to this topic, pls frigging GET OUT of this thread! Kids! I came here to learn smfin meaningful and apart frm the first comment after the OP and a few other ones, other comments na wash! Kai!
@OP,i am not a banker, but i'vIIIe got siblings as bankers.I gotta say this....make meaningful investment while u can. Most bankers tend to b extravagant...i guess they hv an ''image'' to uphold? Infact, have a plan B if u're in a private orgnstn.I hope the bank work is not robbing u of ur personal life? You hv access to business info so u aint handicapped.Pls let ur mentality be ''this bank job is not for ever''.
All the best bro.I hope u get reasonable responses.
stop ranting Miss JJC...if u stay longer enough on these platforms, u will understand that the 'fullstops' are meant to only hold that space while the person is typing ( 'modify' ing) the real post in the background....so next time u find ur self in a new land, try to understand their culture before calling them names else u have u head on a stake..just a word!

Life after a banking job can be quite miserable unless you are well prepared. The sumptuous salary may suddenly cease, the titbit tips and extra allowances may vanish, the access to substantial funds in loans and bulk payments may no longer be available and worse of all, you may think you have friends in generous customers who presently extend financial and other favors, but believe me, it's only your seat (position and power) they value. When you are no longer on the seat, and you are unprepared, then life comes in the same realities of what all others out there are facing... struggling to survive.

I left a high position of the banking sector in 1992 to start on my own. I lived a good life then and till today, I've been able to sustain a good life. My saving grace was that I had already been a practicing businessman before leaving the bank, so I was able to survive in the harsh business world, even without having to cut corners into corruption and dirty deals.

The major lesson I learnt is - whatever you plan to do after banking life, start practicing it now. Don't wait till you are out before you start learning because then, you will only succeed by trial and error. And I can bet you, those money bags who throng to see you nowadays, particularly those Asian businessmen would see you on the streets and turn their heads away, except they have reason to respect you for the success you are able to make in life after banking. I still come across so many of my peers who failed to learn this lesson, who taday are struggling for basic means of survival.

And did I forget to mention that if you fail to prepare for life after banking, you could join the teeming populace of professional politicians to loot government treasuries. But that means you have to sell your very soul to the machinations and schemes of the party heirarchies and mean people you could never have touched with a long pole while you lived the life of a banker.

I worked for 3 years with a bank name withheld by me,I was transferred from the east to Lagos and have never been a fan of Lagos,so after a few months in Lagos I quit...I spent 1year at home but was never perturbed because I have set my eyes working in a university,so I got a chance for an up grade and I got my B.A honors and My Masters degree from schools in South Africa and UK respectively now I work in the university and have gotten an admission for my Phd in the UK next year on scholarship, all expense paid and will be going with my family.I enjoy my work, close by 3.30pm with time for every other thing,I don't regret my decision at all.

I served in a bank so I guess I'm also an Ex-banker. Hehe

Decision: Never would I wanna work in a bank again. Most of the Retail/Commercial banking guys said they never loved what they were doing. I was a corper and thank heavens I wasn't in any of those units.

This is Nigeria though, and the average graduate would take a higher paying bank job over what he really wants. Only with time would he realise his mistake.

Had to reject two bank job offers after the tests and interviews, all cos I wanted to do what I loved. As tempting as it was.I no want story later in future biko. I love my life.

Oh well. Some very few people still enjoy it though.
