Obama 'outraged' by Wright's remarks

Sen. Barack Obama said he is "outraged" by comments his former minister, the Rev. Jeremiah Wright, made Monday at the National Press Club and "saddened by the spectacle."

Sen. Barack Obama on Tuesday denounced comments made by the Rev. Jeremiah Wright.

1 of 2 "I have been a member of Trinity Church since 1992. I have known Rev. Wright for almost 20 years," he said at a news conference in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. "The person I saw yesterday is not the person I met 20 years ago."

Obama said he is outraged by Wright's remarks that seemed to suggest the U.S. government might be responsible for the spread of AIDS in the black community, and his equation of some American wartime efforts with terrorism.

"What particularly angered me was his suggestion somehow that my previous denunciation of his remarks were somehow political posturing," said Obama, who added that Wright had shown "little regard for me" and seemed more concerned with "taking center stage."

Earlier this year, some of Wright's outspoken sermons, circulated and widely discussed on the Internet and on television, became an issue in the Democratic presidential race because of the former pastor's ties to Obama.

In one sermon, Wright said America had brought the September 11, 2001, attacks upon itself. In another, he said Sen. Hillary Clinton had an advantage over Obama because she is white.

Obama gave a speech on race relations during the height of the controversy with Wright and said he rejected Wright's racially charged comments but could not repudiate the man himself.

Obama on Monday said Wright's remarks were "antithetical to our campaign, it was antithetical to what we're about."

"I cannot prevent him from making these remarks," but "when I say I find these comments appalling I mean it. It contradicts what I'm about and who I am , It is completely opposed to what I stand for and where I want to take this country."

In a break with previous comments, Obama focused his criticism on Wright the man, and not simply his remarks.

Obama said he gave Wright "the benefit of the doubt" before his speech on race relations.

"What we saw yesterday from Rev. Wright was a resurfacing and, I believe, an exploitation of these old divisions," Obama said.

He said he had not spoken with Wright since the minister's Monday speech, though he would not rule out a conversation with him in the future

First of all I love Obama very much!

But as a leader reaching for a priceless big cake, you must never allow any imbecilic thing to obstruct your chances; also you must never allow others' personal actions or character to derail your mission. This is why leaders (politicians) mostly denounce everybody including their mothers during the process of accomplishing their goals (before being elected).

Obama had a great opportunity few weeks ago to freeze this man (Rev. Wright) naked and alive, but did not take advantage of the opportunity. He allowed his passiveness, inexperience and bright reputation to take control; which is not a terrible thing. But when it comes to politics and winning an election (for a gigantic position for that matter), I say, kill him before he kills you.
It is damn too difficult to predict human beings, and politics on the other hand is very dirty; I personally see nothing wrong with being proudly dirty sometimes.

Obama needs to systematically come out swinging like a mad man and defend his stance.
I see this as another opportunity for him to use Rev Wright to send message to the world that he's tough, he's ready and can withstand the pressure; after-all, no one wants a weak president.
I hope Obama has the stamina, mental strength and wisdom to recover quickly before the Vulture (H Clinton) lands!

Not all politicians receive all the time just to achieve their political ambition.

Three days ago, you put up a write up praising this same Wright and today you are calling him a mad man and calling on Obama to "kill" him before he kills Obama.
The problem with your strategy here is that you feel that anything (good or bad) that must stop Obama from getting to the white house must be eliminated by all means necessary. Obama seems to have genuine intentions and good conscience; so he might find it difficult to "kill" the man just to satisfy his political ambitions.

I still believe Rev. Wright brought out the bitter truth out and that's why Obama may fail trying to deny, divorce and denounce Wright and the full statement.
How America is trying so hard to turn blind to the underlying truth in Wright's message goes a long way in telling us that US is not ready for a black man as a president.

USA is not ready for Obama.

Who is the devil here?

1. Rev. Wright who interpreted a common law: you cannot terrorize other people without having it done back to you.

2. The American media that keep showing snippets of Wright's statements.

3. Or the American people who judge other people the way that suits them and according to the lies the media feed them?

i think the press needs find out who first circualte the snipet that became an issue.

Well as for Obama , its becoming the president its in God hands .

If it is time for a ab african american to rule. so be it.

I call this the biggest political score yet for Barrack Obama of recent times!
Sometimes, your best friend is simply your worst enemy; such is the influence that Rev.Wright's relationship with Obama is to the latter's ambition.

Go Obama!
That was a very brave and smart move wink

I can not fault Obama for any reason, he handled this matter as honest as he can. To denounce him weeks ago for political expedience would have been too calculative for a man who claims to be guided mostly by conviction for what he thinks is right.

But for Jerimiah Wright to somehow allow himself to surface again and worst of all suggest that Obama's rejection of his views is simply political is too much to swallow. That is public show of disrespect on National TV, and this is very much the right time to put him in his place. I think Obama did, I would not have handled the situation differently. I dont think the Black community will feel betrayed by his action.

Obama gave Wright a second chance he blew it.

As for Clinton, if she wins the nomination by exploiting racial divide as she has been doing. She can as well kiss her dream of being President goodbye. The press confrence by Jim Clyburn which suggest that Hillary is knee capping Obama is a clear warning. She will not get the black vote, as black leaders will not allow her to swiftboat a black politician for being black and somehow hope that in general election she will come back and seek the the black vote.

nuzo and McKren,

I agree with you guys. Wright spoke the truth that America doesn't want to hear. At the same time, Obama needs to distance himself from Wright as far as politics is concerned. However, on spiritual issues, they may still be on the same page. I love Jeremiah Wright. I love Barack Obama. No contradiction!

@nuzo:

Good post; but it will also be nice for you to pay attention to when I stated that "It is damn too difficult to predict human beings"
I do not blame Obama for anything and I do not hate Rev. Wright, but if I have my way I will surely freeze the old man naked and alive.
After presenting an incredible and educational speech on Sunday, yes I was on Rev Wright's shi t just like many others; but on Monday, a new man emerged and showed the world how dumb and inconsiderate human beings in general could be.
His defective ego is getting the best of him.

If he's so smart, so spiritual and lusting badly for the liberation of blacks in America, I think the old man should have known better.
FYI: It was also confirmed yesterday that prior to his preposterous stage performance, he was begged and asked by many not to come out at this time, but the man refused to listen.
I'm sick and tired of folks exploiting "freedom for blacks" to attain their own personal and selfish agenda.

He shouldn't be thrown under the bus; I say, throw him under the raw iron caterpillar.

I hope the sale of his new book makes him a rich man!

I'm totally disappointed.

A question for us, can we back at home run the kind of transparent election going on in america, where the candidates strugle for every single vote of an american.

Do they care about how vote.

can we attain the height america is in politics?

Chai, some people are having a hard time reconciling their homo-erotic love for Obama with their predilection for the politics of victimhood as preached by Rev Wright. grin

Basically, this is a win-win situation for both parties.Obama gets to rid himself of the harmful association with Rev Wright while the latter continues in his carefully chosen path as a shakedown artist who wants to be rich and famous by milking the 'victimology' industry a la fellow Revs, Sharpton and Jackson.
