YourHealthlabs:

If you do a little googling you'll find out that majority of the countries still offering m.b.bs are in asia and africa. It's now seen as a third world med.degree.
Though that doesn't take anything away from smart docz, it's an individual thing.

I only get pissed off when some docz make it seem like "UK and US are falling all over themselves to have Nigerian mbbs docz", nothing can be further from the truth.
Let's protect gullible people from swallowing those lies.

Good morning.
my brother please let's always endeavour to say the truth. even in the 60s and 70s considered the golden years of education in this country, the US or UK never fell over themselves for Nigerian doctors.it has never happened. BUT what still happens today is that no where in the world will you practice with your basic medical degree as an international medical graduate except Trinidad and Tobago (for graduates of UNN,UNIBEN,UNILAG&UNIBADAN). Nigerian medical graduates are not too far behind the Indians when it comes to trashing the USMLE or PLAB. their inability to get residency training placements in their CHOSEN SPECIALITY is far more political(immigration policies, keeping choice placements for american citizens first etc) than quality of Nigerian training.
as a Nigerian doctor,I could pass the USMLE,being in the 99th percentile BUT there are some specialities they won't dare give me like neurosurgery,CTS etc. most of our graduates even with very high scores end up in internal med.,pediatrics or family medicine.
NOTE also that an american doctor must pass our licensing exams here to practice in Nigeria.
this is where you have been mis informing people because it shows you don't even know the purpose of these exams in the first place.
in Nigeria,a patient with chronic cough and weight loss most likely has tuberculosis.in the US,these symptoms most likely mean another disease NOT tuberculosis.
so for me to practice in the US,I must know what diseases are endemic there, their clinical presentation etc
their licensing exams test me on these. that is the purpose.

..........and please for the record many countries are changing their basic degrees from MBBS to MD. it does not mean a higher degree but just a simple name change believe it or not. I was chatting with a few Australian final yr med students and they admitted it was just a NAME CHANGE seeing as their curriculum remained unchanged.
the ideal thing should be that a research component is added to your curriculum but things have remained unchanged in many countries. please I needed to set the record straight.

If a patient dies who is blamed, the doctor. If a patient is mismanaged who is sued, the doctor. If I am the doctor and the buck stops on my table when something goes wrong, then nobody should complain when I say I am in charge. If I see a patient whom I suspect has an ectopic and the ultra sound comes back negative, the PCV appears normal and I fail to follow my clinical judgement and operate on this patient and she dies, who will be blamed ? Me, the Lab Scientist or the ultra sound technician.i gave that scenario because I have seen it played out several times. Lab or X-ray reports are normal but the patient I see in front of me has an obvious pathology. Since I am in charge I act on my clinical knowledge knowing that if the outcome is poor I bear the blame. So if you agree that the buck stops at my table, you have to agree that I am in charge.

that is the point many Nigerians are missing and as irritating and boring as it can be,we have to painstakingly explain to them.
THE BUCK STOPS AT THE DOCTOR'S. after all the English. afterall the tests in the world.after all the xrays.after everything ,the doctor takes the final decision. only he can answer the questions: WHAT IS THE DIAGNOSIS? & WHAT IS THE TREATMENT? at the point that really matters most, all the other health workers fade into the background and the doctor is the person left standing.

eby001: i can't say much about wat is happening in health service.
now back to my school oau. as at now , there are no more medical floor in our hostels. you'll see part 4&5 students 'scouting' if they can't afford to rent rooms in distant ife environs. i spoke about it with a friend of mine. here is his reply: just continue to endure, shebi govt we pay you well for your interns. iwas thinking 'like wtf'
now medical floor offered to year1 students and those who have connection.
it's man's nature to be TERRITORIAL
so they've collected medical floors in awo, faj etc from you? i'm surprised , it was never like this in my days... so do all of you stay in Glory land or Oremeji?

I have followed this thread since its first page and it looks like the doctors are the bad guys here... fine. you've called them all sorts of names- greedy, selfish, inhuman, 'small gods', and what have you.
Now if they are truly what you have labelled them to be , why then do you go to them when you are sick or need help on health issues? How come whenever the other health workers go on strike, nobody opens any thread on Nairaland for discussions? But the moment the drs go on a strike everybody is all over the social media abusing the drs, if the drs were irrelevant , how come we have so much discussions concerning them? or are the other health workers not doing well for the patients?

Djtm: They are just pissing me off!!! Wtf? Our government is a very useless one for this sort of crap to be going on! What's their own concern about how much other specialists are paid? As long as you're paid what you're worth, you shouldn't care about what others earn. If a programmer has worked for a certain number of years, has so much experience under his belt, he has the right to become a consultant programmer. IMO, doctors are overhyped in Nigeria. Well, our leaders do not give a sh1t, so people can continue to die as long as they can afford to go abroad once they have a slight headache.

I HAVE SAID IT OVER TIME! JUST BECAUSE YOU HAVE A RIGHT TO AN OPINION DOES NOT MEAN IT IS WORTHY OF PUBLIC CONSUMPTION, SOME OPINION ARE BETTER OFF AT THE BEER PARLOR OR YABA LEFT DEPENDING ON WHERE THE CRANIAL MATTER TOOK A LEAVE.

For the umpteenth time, Doctors are not asking other fields not to have consultants, neither are they asking them not to strike for salary increment, Doctors are saying that their consultancy is higher than theirs so when you bring yours to the hospital, the Doctor still owns the patient.

Doctors were asked; why like dat? (in Chinese voice) and they said that the Academic curriculum they use to attain to that level is too broad and the other fields are narrowed so they shouldn't be apar. now I have looked at the merits of their arguments and the Doctors are right. (it depends on your IQ level anyways).

You cannot study radiography, specialize in radiography, learn technical certifications on how to fix and maintain X ray machines then you come and say you want to become a consultant, Bros, if you have sense (which I doubt anyways) it is an Insult to doctors and the Federal Govt is so drunk, stup!!d and senseless to allow that injustice to happen.

When I called into a radio programme last night I asked the theater nurse who is the guest on the programme,

Why don't you want to expand your curriculum so that as an experienced Theater nurse you will have the opportunity of being a surgeon?

Nurse: We are not allowed to do that

Me: who are the "we"?

Nurse: Our various Unions and other medical regulatory bodies.

Me: Those unions are supposed to be protecting your interest just like the NMA is protecting the Doctors, why will such a Union impede your academic growth and professionalism?

Nurse: That is left for the nursing guild to answer

Me: how many times have nurses gone on strike this year be it warning or indefinite?

Nurse: once or twice im not sure

me: what were their demands?

Nurse: better work package etc

Me: and you guys forgot the most important thing that would develop your career to be apar with doctors and other health care professionals,
which will help the patient in various ways, eg is when a surgeon/theater nurse is in the clinic and an emergency case comes in, don't you think that the theater nurse/surgeon can save that life in the absence of the doctor?

Nurse: We have to attend to other callers.

From the above conversation, this whole strike is just petty politics and unmerited power tussle, my own annoyance is that people who want to live and earn like consultants refuse to broaden their curriculum to acquire more knowledge but they want to enjoy like people who have accomplished theirs.

It is clear that JOHESU whatever they are called are thieves.

You join the Nigerian Army through Direct short service while your counterpart goes through 5yrs NDA of intensive drilling, yet you want your benefits to be a par?

You join the Nigerian police force today and next year you want to be DIG1, is life that easy for Africans?
why do we love shortcuts?

You sleep 24hrs in a day on Sunday armed with your tithe, you expect the "windows of heaven to open" because Malachi told you so, even God will charge you for cheating his kingdom if you ever get such unmerited favor.

Obi411:

This is pure emotional blackmail. Too bad that it is coming from one whom lives are entrusted to. What do you make of soldiers whose duty is to protect the very lives [which you have betrayed now] with their own lives? How many of them have died in the quest? And their bodies are still counting. Yet they are never spoken of, maybe because they never spent 6, or so, years in the university. Or perhaps, they do not pride in the glory of this great responsibility that has been laid on them, as you do now. Understand this: the greatest people on earth are never heard of. Lest you boast in vain glorification of a privilege given to you. Are medical doctors gods? No, they simply are tools in the hand of the Creator. Let them go back to work, knowing fully well that their calling is a service to humanity, which can never be fully requited here on earth. But wait: even a medical doctor earns more than a soldier!

As much as I appreciate your counter argument, I still beg to differ as regards your reference to soldiers, every profession enjoys a level of privilege depending on your level of professionalism.

let us stick to the Doctor -soldier analogy, the Soldiers enjoy their perks as well not just doctors, if in doubt, ans the following questions;

Who drives from cotonou to Nigeria without paying a single Govt revenue?
who drives a vehicle for 22yrs and for that period never renewed his papers?
who is that privileged citizen whose kids go to command schools free?
who is that citizen who can access health care anywhere in the country in any military hospital free?
who is that citizen who drives without a license and nobody dare ask him questions?
Who drives on BRT lane?
who scratches your car on the road, confiscates yours while you fix his?
who by an unfortunate accident of their demise in the hands of a civilian and the nation comes to a stop?
who buys land but pays nothing to both state, LGA, Omonile, Obioakkpor and other revenues, by the sign post "MIlitary zone" every evil is kept at bay?
who uses electricity for over 30yrs and never pays his bill and nobody coughs?
who has the power to arrest any civilian and beat the living day light out of you yet nobody coughs?
who enters any public transport and never pays a dime by virtue of his uniform?
who has the right to commit any crime of his choice by virtue of his uniform?
Who is that privileged citizen who is not tried in conventional courts, he is tried by friends and colleagues in the name of court marshal?

If you agree soldiers enjoy some certain privileges, why wont the doctors enjoy theirs?
Doctors have said, leave consultancy for us, anybody who wish to have that tag should kindly enroll in the medical school, is it too much to ask?

Doctors are not saying others should not be consultants? Are u sure about that? From all we've been hearing it does seems so.

Then I refuse to believe that nurses, pharmacists etc. are dragging superiority in patient care with doctors.

Then I've said before, medical practice didn't start in Nigeria; do other health professionals in US, UK, Canada become consultants? It seems they do.

If so, why should it be a taboo in Nigeria. I understand in Nigeria, we always like to abuse the system, therefore rules, regulations, and stringent requirement only need to be put into place so that there won't be abuse or any health professional overstepping his/her bounds.

But to put a blanket no no no on any other health professional apart from doctors becoming consultant doesn't seem right.

With the right rules, regulations and requirements put in place, it means not every dick & harry will become consultants. Among these other health professionals, we will have people that are geniuses amongst them. They should be able to aspire to the peak of their careers, making use of the benefits that comes from being recognized as a consultant in your field.

Hearme:

90% of doctors are arrogant. You know only the surface of Biochemistry and physiology. I challenge you to a debate on this. If a PhD holder starts at level 10 equivalent in the university, no honors degree should be granted a level 12 equivalent. Anyway I don't so much blame the doctors, I blame the lawmakers who have spent 15 good years in this dispensation of democracy doing nothing, yet collecting all. If our labour laws and salaries and wages commission do function well there will be less crisis in the system. Only that none of them are seeing, yet they have committees overseeing everything in this country. Its a shame that the ASUP strike is still on and the ASUU issues are still been toyed with. Labour issues might never end unless the political appointees begins to think straight. I'm still baffled that a 8 years serving governor who solicited for your vote to lead is entitled to a live pension while workers who worked for 35years are told to do contributory pension scheme. Why can't the president and governors do contributory pension from their official salary? Why should they enjoy free medical health after stealing much from us? Its really a pain that there is no fairness or even a slight equity in our nation. This challenges will continue unless a thinking government sees to it. I'm not sure confab is dealing with labour issues appropriately at all. PLEASE VOTE WISELY IN 2015.

There is no doubt you may be a guru in Biochemistry or physio, but Imagine where the doctor has to be a guru in your field and other fields you may not have heard of?
so tell me honestly, who deserves to own the patient on merit? you "one way guru" or the doctor who happens to be an "all round guru", answer honestly.

The day a physiotherapist heads a hospital and a Biochemist owns a patient that day will be my last in any Nigerian hospital running such insane structure.

the problem with Nigerians is that they don't have a fore sight, they don't know how to analyze scenarios and fix culpability where it belongs, It begs whether the average Nigerian is even educated.
JOHESU's demand will kill more patients than this strike, but you guys refuse to see, when it manifests you run to courts and ojota in protest, or perhaps, run to the church as usual.

The subsidy removal was announced April 2011, Nigerians being dumb people did not protest, why? because they were not able to string the relationship between subsidy and increased cost of living.

January 2012, they went to the gas station and met triple the price of gas, they went to transport companies and saw triple the fare, they took to the street and started disturbing Ojota, meanwhile the 2012 budget did not even carry the so called subsidy because the Govt thought the people were Ok! with it.

the demonstrations even came to the politicians as a surprise which begs the question? why was there no protest before January?
Ans: the average Nigerian is a m0r0n who doesn't know, foresee or understand how govt policies affect him, fortunately, Our doctors have proved they are no ordinary Nigerians, they have shown they have the academic will to look into the future to analyze the demerits of this Govt senseless policy and have the strength to stand up to it.

Liken this present scenario with President Sarkorzy's Labor law, in less than 24hrs, Paris was shut down in protest, people were able to analyze critically the demerits of the law because they have functional brains, what do we get in Nigeria, people who cannot think beyond their lips insulting and crucifying doctors, for fighting for their own future.

If Nigerians have sense, they should be on the street with placards protesting for the law to be reversed, the TUC and NLC should be on solidarity strike, that will spare the doctors the stress of going on strike and concentrate on their jobs, but hey! we are Nigerians whose IQ rival that of a Nematode for us to have the temerity to insult doctors for saving our future.

Has any of you including the Sun news writer taken time to juxtapose the curriculum of the Doctor with that of JOHESU members? none of them came close at consultancy level, and I will challenge any of you to prove me wrong. with such ridiculous curriculum you want to head the hospital and own the patient? kai, Nigeria is a disgrace as a country. As a matter of fact, the Health minister or whoever proposed that nonsense should be jailed without trial.

A consultant lab scientist can never own a patient, not any member of my family, God forbid! and forbid again. The NMA MUST not allow this sacrilege to happen, unless they expand their curriculum to be a par with doctors, anything short is not acceptable!!

but then, what do I know, JOHESU is interested in only the benefits, that is why they say the doctors are stopping them from getting a higher pay, when will JOHESU strike for their curriculum to be broadened so they will be a par with the doctors in academia? I am still waiting for that day!!

To JOHESU, it is about the benefits and money, to Doctors, it is about a senseless govt who wants to torpedo academic superiority and enthrone mediocrity in our health care delivery.

God forbid!!

If you are a consultant and you don't own a patient, of what use is your consultancy? Doctors want to own the patient and I agree completely with that.

Then I refuse to believe that nurses, pharmacists etc. are dragging superiority in patient care with doctors.

Why then do they want to be consultants if they don't want to own the patient? so you advocate they answer consultants, earn fat salaries while the doctor (suffer head) owns the patient, of what use is that to us as a Nation?

Then I've said before, medical practice didn't start in Nigeria; do other health professionals in US, UK, Canada become consultants? It seems they do.

Nigeria problems require Nigerian solution, leave Canada out of this.

If so, why should it be a taboo in Nigeria. I understand in Nigeria, we always like to abuse the system, therefore rules, regulations, and stringent requirement only need to be put into place so that there won't be abuse or any health professional overstepping his/her bounds.

Exactly one part of my argument, has the strident laws been made? when will JOHESU go on strike for the govt's failure in making the laws?
Is this not why the doctors are saying "NO" because JOHESU is putting the cart before the horse? like I said abinitio, has JOHESU gone on strike for the inability of Govt to expand their curricula? I am still waiting for them.

I believe you should change the laws that guide your existence first, expand your curricula to have the required knowledge before fighting for consultancy, that is what common sense have on my table, i don't know about you

But to put a blanket no no no on any other health professional apart from doctors becoming consultant doesn't seem right.

Its unfortunate education has taken such a downward spiral in nigeria, hence the majority level semi literacy which is the norm these days. Boko haram things I suppose. People just refuse to be enlightened because they consider ignorance a better deal for them personally.

In the olden days, communities ensured they had representatives in every occupation, this went a long way towards achieving your community goals and having a standing when others were talking. You make sure your community is represented in all the major fields of endeavour. To this end, quite a lot of nigerians were specifically sponsored to various institutions both abroad and at home, just to get an education. People were more far sighted then, and understood these sacrifices were not just for individual things, but overall. Doesn't mean everybody got educated, but the ones who did, knew it was for a general benefit, not just a personal one.

If people would look past their envy, individual grievances, mercenary natures, boko haram sponsorship and refusal to be enlightened, they'd work harder towards the above outlined things, rather than focusing solely on pull em down syndrome brought about by bad belle. Families are supposed to be doing what communities used to do in those days, however, it is not so.

there is no doubt consultant nurses and pharmacists exist outside these shores.johesu is quick to throw that in our faces.but they become brain dead when they have to look up the QUALIFICATIONS that go with those posts.

I would appreciate a link from any of them that proves that consultant nurses and pharmacists are HOSPITAL BASED and I would also like a link where the qualifications needed are outlined.

Haha. Same goes for you

You sleep 24hrs in a day on Sunday armed with your tithe, you expect the "windows of heaven to open" because Malachi told you so, even God will charge you for cheating his kingdom if you ever get such unmerited favor.
you have some good points there marred by your inappropriate choice of words.

It is only a nematode who ignores the substance in a message but pays attention to the choice of words, typical Nigerian.

@ all medical doctors

please is it possible that majority of JOHESU members actually dropped out from college of medicine or probably couldn't make the Jamb cut off?
If it is true, kindly explain to us how it plays out in most Nigerian medical colleges

eby001: i can't say much about wat is happening in health service.
now back to my school oau. as at now , there are no more medical floor in our hostels. you'll see part 4&5 students 'scouting' if they can't afford to rent rooms in distant ife environs. i spoke about it with a friend of mine. here is his reply: just continue to endure, shebi govt we pay you well for your interns. iwas thinking 'like wtf'
now medical floor offered to year1 students and those who have connection.
it's man's nature to be TERRITORIAL

what is happening to ife?

I strongly disagree with you that we should leave Canada, US, UK out of it. Why should we? Why should other health professionals be able to become consultants in other countries but in Nigeria it must not be so because of the insecurities or fear of doctors.

What should be done I say again is to address those fear and securities. You can't say no no no... this must never be.

The way I see it, doctors are trying to be in Nigeria what their counterpart are not in other countries.

How come the consultants of other countries have not taken over patient care over from the doctors? Whatever is that reason. it should be replicated here.

But I know you're are not interested in any of this. Let me tell you. The world is changing. Repression will always give way to the pressure of change.

For how long do you think doctors can prevent other health professionals from becoming consultants. If there are becoming consultants in other parts of the world, then eventually, doctors will not be able to stop it from happening in Nigeria. Try and learn something from history. It's just a matter of time.

The earlier doctors comes to terms with this the better.
