Revive The Habit Of Self-sufficiency- For Every Nigerian Woman/girl by Nobody: 7:43pm On Sep 17, 2014

This is my opinion.

I used to listen to men whine about Nigerian women being gold-diggers and most times I don't blame the men.
When an entire generation of women do not know the value of hard-work and working with ones hands to make ends meet, then there is a problem somewhere.

Dear Naija woman,
There's no written law that men should buy you recharge cards, buy you sharwamah or take you shopping. Any man that choose to spend on you only does that because he has money to spend in the first place. And last I checked, the freedom to earn money isn't restricted to the male gender alone.
We know how easy it is, to paint your face all day and then dress up to meet a man who will spend on you. But what I don't understand is how we all grew up believing that we can not make our own money. How? Why? Who told you that you can't work to take care of your needs.

Pls, the good men I have met do not want intellectual and physical liabilities.
What happened to the days when our MOTHERS worked hard to care for the family?

Every time you wait for a man to credit your phone, buy your meals, change your wardrobe and cater to your every need.. Then, you have also given them the licence to talk down on you and treat you like a nonentity with nothing to offer.

For those of you who think you can get whatever you want from men without lifting a finger to better your own life. All I can ask is, for how long? How long will you remain brain-dead and dependent.

Get up and find something to do pls, those women out there who engage in petty trade are not silly.
There's actually no pride in being jobless and showing off expensive clothes and items especially if your parents are not wealthy enough to support your life-style.

Whether you are a young school leaver,
An undergraduate or even if you haven't had the chance to study in any school. Just get a job and earn your own money.
Permit me to say this- If you don't find it demeaning to spread your legs in the east and west direction just to get #5,000 from a man, then you shouldn't find any job too demeaning.

*Go to pure water factories and other factories and apply as factory workers.
* Make small chops at home and distribute to Northerners to sell for you.
*There are a zillion small businesses in Lagos alone. Go and apply as sales-person.
*Go and learn a trade.
*Apply at mushroom schools to teach children.
*Study well in school too. So you can get a good job upon graduation.
* Take a walk round your community, you will surely get something to do.
*Apply to learn a trade.

You will not be arrested if you start buying your own recharge cards tongue and paying your own bills.
Thank you.

*N.B: If you find this post offensive, forgive me. There are a lot of women out there working for their upkeep and being responsible.
And there a whole lot of women who think moving from one bar to the other, dressing to kill and getting money from men without lifting a finger to work is the norm.
It is not normal. Pls, if you are in this category, go and find work to do. Even if your salary is not much, at least you can buy little things for yourself.
How can you be proud of using high-end phones and expensive stuffs that your folks can't afford, yet you are jobless and without a source of income.. Pls, what sort of 'invisible' business earn you so much money?

As for me, I find extreme joy in knowing that I can take care of my needs when there's need to do so.
And when men spend on me, they do so out of freewill and not cos I have to beg or pay in kind.
Hard work doesn't kill smiley

Preach on!!!

And let every of our worries not be about men, guys, boys.
It is ok to worry about them but they shouldn't be our priority smiley

Think of the next career workshop you will be attending.

Think of the next skill you will like to acquire.

Think of the next step you will be taking to make yourself more productive.

Think of the next item you will be adding to your CV.

Think of ways through which you can help the hungry, homeless etc around you.

Think of the next foreign meal you will be learning how to cook.

Think of the next certificate you will like to acquire.

There are so many things to think of other than boys or men and how to extort money from them.

And don't just think! Take a step forward! ACT! !!

I am speaking to myself as well.

I love this...Ride on Op,Some girls actually depend on their boyfrnds as if the guy is their father! Girls shouldn't base their happiness on being in a relationship. Remember that nothing lasts forever. Even the
perfect relationship might end one day. Be independent, try to provide 4 urself @least when things don't work out well,u will be able to support urself.

It's pretty simple, exceptional and straight forward! Every woman should strive to be independent. Life demands struggle and hardwork is the answer! Perfect write-up!

well written. we ladies should always believe in ourselves, we should trust ourselves and believe no Aristotle or bf can take care of us better than we can with our own money.

u will even notice that when u spend your hard earned money on yourself, you will have more confidence to speak among your peers and people will see u as a strong woman not just some dumb score who has d inability to be reproductive, therefore u will be respected and given high regards.

anyway I believe almost every ladies know this but so many have chosen to ignore it because of...what's that word again... GREED

and it is not only about money, we should also be emotionally independent, don't ever say 'my happiness ends with chinedu' chinedu can end up falling your hand one day, humanas are unpredictable.

Quite an insightful one,the world will always be a better place to live if all ladies/women can stand on their two feet and boast of self independence.

No man wishes to have a liability, little wonder why some ladies get dumped at the slightest provocation? The answer isn't very far from you, decipher it asap. Nice read Standd

Good to know you find the post insightful. The point is women should revive the habit of hardwork. I see a lot of idle and jobless gals around these days yet they live fine. Its daunting.

Its really no news, as its everywhere, most gals these days feel that with a pretty face and an empty brain you'd go placescheesy lollz.

Even the uni isn't an exception,am always hearing"you know this man( a lecturer) likes you,you don't have to read his course still you'd pass....the list goes on and on.

If only every lady/woman would accept credence to the fact that hardwork pays,it will help the situation.

If only these annoying strata of men-dependent, rich men-chasing women could read and practice this, and develop some iota of self-worth:

1. the spate of women bashing, both offline and online will reduce.

2. The respect for the average Nigerian woman, will increase.

3. The physical abuse women suffer will reduce because a woman that has nothing to offer his man but her neanderthals and cooking skills, will be seen as a property and can used as a rag any day. When a man buys a girl all her clothes, pays almost her bills, buys her phones, pays her rent, he'll automatically take the girl as his property and can use her anyhow. It's not rocket science. But when a man sees a well-established and independent woman, he can't take her for granted because he knows she can cope without him. One of the reasons why women stay in abusive relationships is because if they leave, they can't survive on their own, hence they stay back and take the beatings.

This intelligent post by @Standd, is one of the reasons I've sworn to marry an employed, independent, educated woman. I don't care about the complaints of some men that successful women are disrespectful, egostical, blah blah blah. . . That's bullshît. Many independent and successful women are good lovers and once you love and respect them, they'll choke you with love and respect in return.
