The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) says Nigeria recorded 85 per cent employment in the first half of 2014.

This was contained in a statement issued by the Statistician-General of the Federation, Dr Yemi Kale, in Abuja on Tuesday.

“In both the first and second quarter of 2014, over 85 per cent of employment was made up of the three cadres of managerial, professional, technical, clerical and related office workers.

The statistician-general said the managerial, professional and technical cadre recorded 1,085,071 employees, representing 34.25 per cent of the total number in the first quarter.

He said the figure increased to 1,091,096 employees, representing 34.62 per cent of the total in second quarter.

Kale said that those employed as operatives were 943,652, representing 29.78 per cent of the total employed in first quarter and 930,507, representing 29.53 per cent in second quarter.

He added that operative and clerical and related office workers made up of 679,173, representing 21.43 per cent in first quarter, a slightly lesser than 672,714 or 21.35 per cent recorded in second quarter.

“By economic activity, education (private) was the greatest employer in the formal sector, with 1, 573,082 employees; it made up 49.64 per cent of the total employed in the first quarter.

“It increased marginally by 0.43 per cent or 6,771 employees in the second quarter to reach 1,579,854 or 50.13 per cent of the total.”

He said that the manufacturing sector recorded 503,023 or 15.87 per cent of total formal employment.

According to him, the sector declined by 2.64 per cent to employ 489,273 or 15.54 per cent of the total employed in the formal sector in second quarter.

“The main driver of the overall decline in formal employment in the second quarter came from the professional, scientific and technical services.

“In these sectors, the 107,986 workers or 3.41per cent of the total were employed in the first quarter.

“But they declined by 49.35 per cent to 54,697 or 1.74 per cent of the total employed in the second quarter.

“The greatest was Administrative and Support Services, which increased by 34.85 per cent from the 16,592 employees recorded in the first quarter to 73,145 in the second.”

I truly wonder how they arrived at this astounding figure..

Perhaps they feel they can throw any figure at us and we dance to the high heavens in great spirits just like we did during the GDP re basing period while the myriad of evils which plague our nation see no abatement.

I really hunger for the day when Nigeria would begin to release figures that are commensurate with reality on ground.

This article is misleading na, I thought they were saying '85% of people who were jobless at the beginning of the year have secured jobs now', thunder for fire them today. Looking at it the other way, are they saying just around 2 million Nigerians are employable/currently employed? what happened to about 2 million graduates leaving NYSC annually for the past 4 yrs or so? still in the labour market

Story! A nation of lies and tales by moonlight!

I wrote in another thread that I have learned not to pity people in Nigeria when they go through problems. they are mostly petty-minded and apologetic to evil. It's a shame that a nation that has the largest population professing righteousness the worst unemployment, sins, crime, heartlessness, curses, evil, fraud happen in the nation. You cannot do business with anyone there and have peace of mind. Obviously there's no sign that God is near Nigeria. Just self-deceiving religious bigots! Who cares what they think and how they feel about the truth? The entire world already know who we are. Do we think that investors will over-look these negative portraits and invest in Nigeria? Without investor-confidence attracting a sustained growth in the manufacturing sector how will there be employment? Let the Govt keep hiring policemen, immigration officers and security agents to check crime they created, and road-sweepers and call it employment. There's fraud and corruption in every country, the difference in Nigeria is that there's no outrage rather we hail it.

For your information it's corruption and poor value systems that created poverty and unemployment in Nigeria. Both are recipes to crime, social problems and civil wars. We ain't seen anything yet.

What total are they referring to?

A total of 1.5 million employed people from last year or a total of 1.5 million people among the roughly 50 million skilled and unskilled workforce in the country

These people have got to be cra*y

IF YOU MUST LIE, TELL A LIE THAT WOULD BE BELIEVED.

I think if GEJ hand over his publicity to his E-WARIORS in nairaland, they would do a much better job.

PM news should revisit the report by NBS and say exactly what was said and stop this dog and pony headline. I don't know why you are trying to
rubbish a comprehensive, 1st and 2nd Quarter 2014 Job Creation Survey Report, with such a silly headline.

For those interested the 77 pages report is on their webpage.
