The debt profile of Ekiti State has continued to generate controversies, as former Governor Kayode Fayemi defended the financial dealings of his government, saying the debt profile of the state stood at N36.3 billion as against the figures quoted by Governor Ayo Fayose. In a statement made available to newsmen in Ado Ekiti, on Sunday, Fayemi denied that the state account was in red, saying the claim was “fraudulent.” In the statement signed on his behalf by his Chief Press Secretary, Olayinka Oyebode, Fayemi said “for the avoidance of doubt, the indebtedness of the state, as of October 15, 2014 is N36,316,017,758.93. “Of this amount, the sum of N7,830,636,440.62 represents foreign loans incurred by previous government since the days of the Old Ondo State.” Fayemi said he was providing additional details to a reaction to the same issue by his erstwhile Commissioner for information, Mr Tayo Ekundayo, who had said the state borrowed N25 billion from the capital market and had paid N14 billion of the borrowed sum. “The remaining sum of N28,485,381,316.31 represents internal loan. This include inherited loans from previous government and outstanding balance (debt) of the bond taken at the Capital Market.” Fayemi added in the statement that “in spite of this, the Federal Government is owing the state the sum of N17,710,728,299.06, which include N10,839,493,135.63 (amount due from construction of federal roads); N4,012,384,082.60 (refund on Paris Club) and N2,858,851,080.83 (amount due on ecological projects). “If the Federal Government would graciously effect part of this payment, the debt profile of the state would have been greatly reduced.” “It is our belief that Mr Fayose was hasty in making a pronouncement on the state of finances and other matters without first going through the handing over note, which contains explicit details of government transactions and financial situation,” the statement read. |

If Fayose feels the debt either 36bn, 89bn or 1trillion has been mis-used by Fayemi government, then he should do the needful by probing or inviting of any other toothless govt agency (EFCC/ICPC) to help him out, rather than talking . If Fayose can't probe Fayemi successfully, then IMHO FAYEMI is CLEAN. Good Morning Nigerians 1 Like |

The immediate-past governor of Ekiti State, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, has dismissed claims of financial recklessness and indebtedness levelled against his administration by the Governor, Ekiti State, Ayodele Fayose. And this thread will not make frontpage , last time I was banned for calling the mods attention and copying the owner of not pushing the nairaland e-poll thread between GEJ and GMB to frontpage but rush in putting Buhari getting loan to purchase nomination form to frontpage. Let wait and see if this will make frontpage to counter the first claim of Fayose of PDP. Need confirmation or otherwise of the bolded. |

I watched Fayemi's defense of his administration on channels tv Sunday evening. I actually knew what brought Fayose into the government house was the aversiveness of the states civil service(an overload of over 30,000) to change.Fayemi had employed a consulting firm to help confirm number, conduct knowledge test so he could effect reform.Civil servants(especially teachers and local government workers)became adamant and resisted, and eventually chose to vote Fayose as an escape route for them to keep their jobs including those who practically do nothing an would have been deployed to more useful sectors. Fayose saw the gap, bloated it or of proportion and exploited the rural populace who were dependants on these civil servants by telling them Fayemi is another Fashola that will destroy their wards means of income through needless modernization.it worked because he failed to tell them how Lagos has benefited. These civil servants became unofficial Fayose's campaign foot soldiers and the deal was done, Fayemi lost. I doubt if Fayose could be telling the truth because if Ekiti should have such huge debt, Fayemi should be probed.Information provided on this debt seems explicit but politicians, you can never say never but Fayose could be worse with figures, may be he should provide us with his own breakdowns. My fear is about the 50 billion difference, if Ekiti people should accept it it could just be the amount being planned to execute the stomach infrastructures of sharing Christmas chickens and foods distribution instead of engaging in human capacity building and economic empowerment. 1 Like |
