I have to ask though, why are you ladies going on the offensive with the argument that dressing half-naked was once an African thing?
Are we then to return to the good ol' bare-brea.sted-'partial disclosure' days? cheesy

Also, there's this thing about hypocrisy - more often than not, we are oblivious of the fact that while condemning hypocrisy, we open up ourselves to it as well.
Is there a woman here who would allow her daughter wear an outfit that exposes or highlights some sexxual part of her body on the excuse that it's a choice and afterall a thing of our pre-colonial past?

Hypocrisy anyone? gringrin

I'm just saying though, what's wrong is wrong and what's right is right - all subjective to the particular time/era in question. That being under-dressed was normal occurrence in a time when sexxual crimes were uncommon should not make it okay in a time when it is considered perversive.

Who in their right minds will wear a gym suit to travel? A GYM SUIT What kind of yeye liberty is that? And yes even in my village young girls with full breasts still walk about in some remote areas but that doesnt mean cococandy or efemena will now decide to go topless in the city! Haba. Let's be honest for once. I would have taken her picture but that could have been a bad idea as in invasion of her privacy. And anyway we are not talking of a sweet sixteen here, I would place her at 30-40yrs. It was more of fermented eye cheese and not eye candy that we were being 'forced' to watch.

Well, given the choice, I know which I'll prefer when presented with either of these clothes as worn by the The Dahoman Captive Egbado Omoba (from the Yewa clan of the Yoruba tribe) renamed: Sarah Forbes Bonetta - Queen Victoria's black goddaughter (1851):

but the women displaying flesh are adults now - which means they are now independent and can make choices on what to wear at what time(even if their parents don't entirely agree with what they wear sometimes). it's no hypocrisy.

why are men allowed to walk bare-chešted and women aren't? it's all in the head. i have been to many beaches where the women had no bra at all & they were playing volleyball - after a while, i got used to the scenario. grin

i have also been to the market in nigeria where i saw old women with their bare-böobs in display. did i get offended? nope!!! cos i have come to expect such stuff in the market anyways. just take it off your mind & move on.

I agree with all you've said except the part where you tried to dismiss the hypocrisy.

Okay they're adults, at least the one in the story is. You do realize however that this 'adult' in the OP probably has a mother or at least someone in the role of a mother in her life, right?

Now imagine this 'mother' sitting amidst that group of people noticing all that negative attention on her daughter...would she or would she not advise her daughter at a later time about such a dressing?
I mean like, if one of these ladies here were to be that mother...what do you think will be their response? cheesy

I'm not trying to start some needless back and forth here, just looking at this from the opposite more realistic side of the divide which is subjective to our Nigerian orientation/culture/ethics.

Since no one wants to support the OP, let me put myself in the spot for some female-attack just like he has been subjected to....yeah, I'm weird like that grin

Crackhaus the point most people were trying to draw on was the OP blaming the west for our morals based on the fact that this lady was wearing a gymsuit. If he had just probably spoken about the gym suit on its own the analogy of how we used to dress or how totally covering up is not necessarily our culture might have never ensued.

And right now I have a say in what my daughter wears as she is still a minor but by the time she is an adult I have little control over it.My mum thinks my not tying gele sometimes on iro and buba is not befitting for a married woman undecided *rolls eyes* but she can only state her opinion I am now my own woman. So I can only hope my daughter mantains a sense of decorum in future based on values I might have inculcated into her but style is an individual thing.

tiwa savage & maheeda have mothers, don't they? have they committed suicide over the kinda images the media have printed about their daughters. after your daughter leaves your house, what she decides to do is entirely up to her. yours is to set her foot on the right path & as far as your conscience beats right on that, she has her life to live.

Nobody has said that we should return to the times when women did not cover their b*reats.
The point being made is that it was the West that suggested that African women cover up more. Consequently, the West has not "corrupted" this aspect of the African culture in that it made women show more of their bodies.

Also, there's this thing about hypocrisy - more often than not, we are oblivious of the fact that while condemning hypocrisy, we open up ourselves to it as well.

Hypocrisy
behaviour in which somebody pretends to have moral standards or opinions that they do not actually have

http://www.oxfordlearnersdictionaries.com/definition/english/hypocrisy

How did anyone here, apart from the OP, pretended that they had more moral standards?

If I say that I do not want my child to expose her va*gina or br*easts, how does it mean that I pretend to have moral standards that I do not?
Am I hypocritical when I tell my child not to smoke but don't care whether some stranger does? undecided

Hypocrisy anyone? gringrin

Yes, the OP.

He claimed that Westerners corrupt African culture by making African women expose too much of their bodies when it was his culture that was more tolerant of na*kedness for a much longer period of time.

I'm just saying though, what's wrong is wrong and what's right is right - all subjective to the particular time/era in question. That being under-dressed was normal occurrence in a time when sexxual crimes were uncommon should not make it okay in a time when it is considered perversive.

Is it wrong to dress up like this to be comfortable on a journey or maybe on the way to the gym?

what is mapouka dance?
The famous cote d'ivore sex dance and the origin of the now popular 'twerking'.

Wikipedia.
Mapouka (also macouka) is a traditional dance from the Dabou area of southeast Côte d'Ivoire that originated with the Aizi, Alladian and Avikam people.[1] It is also known as "la danse du fessier" or "the dance of the behind".

The dance is mostly performed by women,[2] shaking their rear end side to side, facing away from their audience, often while bent over.

In the 1980s, artists of the Ivory Coast tried without much success to popularize it. One of the most well known groups is Tueuses de Mapouka. In 1998, the government of Côte d'Ivoire prohibited its performance in public.[3] Following the prohibition, the dance enjoyed very fast-growing global following, especially in the sub-Saharan countries and western nations with large Francophone communities

colonisation & christianity had africans convinced that half-nüdity is immoral. as years rolled by, even the western folks are abandoning christianity & are sticking to their fundamental human rights.

to be fair to our women, the climate in africa does not favour full-clothing. visit anywhere remotely close to the tropical climate we have in africa & every chic is bikini-clad. how then are our ladies immoral? what is even immoral? if you see a woman in bikini by the pool-side or lekki beach, would you say she's immoral?

why is it any different if you see her dressed like that on the street? if you can control yourself on the beach, where's that same self-control on the street? really, everyone needs to change their orientation.

If , according to you, everyone needs to change their orientation then you are indirectly saying everyone sees it as abnormal.

There is appropriate dressing for every occasion. I wear swimming trunks when I go to the pool and nobody bats an eye. I won't because of that wear swimming trunks to work on a Monday or to travel to Lagos in a bus for that matter. What that lady was wearing was wrong, period, no matter how hot the weather was or is and the only reason she wore it without fear is because she was being 'modern' as far as I'm concerned. It was a disgusting thing for a 30something year old lady who should have had the wisdom to know better to wear.

Even when the weather is hot there are light cotton materials that are very airy and decent to wear. Also exposing your skin to direct sunlight can lead to sunburn and skin cancers especially if you are white. So saying the weather is hot or whatever is a moot point.

maybe you are living in the wrong century.
maybe I am.
