Weselion:
The funniest part is, if they are not able to sell at least half of the goods, their mothers will beat the hell out of them.

Its not about buying or not buying from them, the federal government should just ban it. I'm sure we have children welfare groups in this country and they are not doing anything about it
some of d children welfare official's maid also hawks

Walking through the streets of Benin, many streets in Nigeria-infact many parts of the world-its not uncommon to see little children ranging from 5-13yrs hawking goods like purewater, groundnut. Some are also bus conductors.

Whenever I see such, two thoughts flash through my mind.
One is: Patronize this little child so he/she get home on time.
The other:don't patronize the little child,in that way, you discourage such practice.

So nairalanders, what do you do in such cases?

Who is supposed to be selling the pure waters?
Their parents?

It's their duty to do that to make ends meet.
They are poor, remember.

So just buy from them, don't cheat them, and go your way.
The system will one day, eliminate that.

No win situation; if you buy you encourage child labour, if you don't buy they could starve.

Some times I really feel pity for them and then patronise dem so they can sell nd make money for their parents
Re: Patronizing Children(young) Street Hawkers by Nobody: 7:02pm On Nov 15, 2014
sometimes i also practice this your thought number two.

but then i thought "people are divided into two classes. the upper and the lower class"

and also- giving alms to the poor (beggers) i believe there is reward for that according to islam.

anyway..... may Allah help us all.

Though I don't support child hawking, I buy from them. I feel some of them need the money to complete their school fees or buy books, etc. Its better than stealing or child prostitution. And I fear for them especially those ones that ply the express ways.
Re: Patronizing Children(young) Street Hawkers by fritxie101(m): 7:04pm On Nov 15, 2014
Sum of dos kids are nt with deir parents, so d foster parents or guardians put dem into d street hawk, en @ tyms deir feeding depends largely on d outcum of d sales. d tin is jus for one ta patronize dem, cos ma dear pple, condition critical for dis country oooo; buh na God sha.

I do patronize them. Sometimes their meal for the day depends on the sales they make, some of them get beaten if they go back home with their wares.
Re: Patronizing Children(young) Street Hawkers by Nobody: 7:05pm On Nov 15, 2014
Survival of the fittest. Life is not fair at all, life was never fair to all. I feel bad sometimes seeing these children engaged in roadside hawking, so many risks involved. Sometimes I see it as a menace to our society and sometimes i don't because their parents are prolly living from hand to mouth and most of us also rely on their services especially when we're returning back home after close of work. I really feel for them
Re: Patronizing Children(young) Street Hawkers by seangy4konji: 7:06pm On Nov 15, 2014
I don't patronize them.

But ain't there fault cause the situation each individual facing is critical so to meet ends meet?those kids must go out.

No be small thing.
Re: Patronizing Children(young) Street Hawkers by drsteroid(m): 7:10pm On Nov 15, 2014
I do feel sorry 4 them wheneva I see them..what annoys me most is that their parents or whoever sends them to hawk will just give them rotten or unripe fruits e.g cherry to hawk around in hot sun knowing fully that its hard for them to get someone to buy such fruits or goods..some of the goods they give them to hawk and roam about with, are not even up to 50naira sometimes..I see it more as wickedness..- think poverty shudnt be confused with wickedness..its really time for the govt 2 make a law against child hawking.

everyone have his /her own story to tell... I was once in this category... grin.

And is that supposed to be "a good thing" and be encouraged just because there are people like you who have been in such situation? My answer is, as a society we should look for ways to end this bad way of life

This is a challenge to an educated Nigerian woman. The thread is not about relationship but, about a child then you will see very few comments from female users.
This is where our women should be more active like every other places on earth.
Nigerian women must rise to play their roles as women...

I just feel for them cos I've never been in their conditions before, but its well. I'll kindly patronize them if possible purchase all they have so that they can return home. But the sad thing is that they'll be given more to go and sell!. How touching.

If you want to discourage such practice you go to the root cause,
not by whether you patronize them or not.

Nice contributions so far. But we seems to be leaving the parents out of it. In Edo state for example, the primary and secondary school education is free of charge but still, many of such "less privilege" parent won't encourage their ward to attend. BTW won't it be better as a father/mother to take up the responsibility-even if it means hawking-instead of passing it over to the innocent ward?

This is my major reason of considering the thought of ignoring them(i.e,discouraging their guidance from such act)

God bless you sir!

Infant, you just spoke my mind!

I don't really know why people give birth to kids they can't fend for, it is really disheartening! sad

If you can't take proper care of a kid, then don't give birth to any! angry

The last time I checked, they still sell contraceptives in the nearest chemist.

You mean thesame Nigerian women that keep clamoring for equality? undecided

Talk about misplaced priority.

Re: Patronizing Children(young) Street Hawkers by SkinnyDude(m): 7:53pm On Nov 15, 2014
i always patronize them and after buying from them. i dont fail to ask them this question "how many are you in your family?". i start hearing 7, 8, 9 and sometimes 10. i just check my head and give up.

i blame those parents who give birth to children they cant take care of.. i really wish FG could pass One-Child bill. atleast, it will help.
