Poetry and other arts with religion have assisted in no small measure in getting us in the NOW that science is currently nudging us further. Tomorrow, it could be a resuscitated form of poetry or something greater than science to lunch us further. Everything is in constant flux. Poetry and others deserves Respect. OP is misinterpreted. |

joseph1832: First of all, we could all live without poetry. We would be turned into robots without entertainment and we would state everything literally........just like the people in the movie "Equilibrium". But without science, we would live shorter lives, we would be ignorant and we wouldn't have a lot of gadgets that we have now. Including the internet/nairaland on which you are defending Laykorn. I'd pick being a robot over halving my life and being ignorant. Both science and poetry are important but science takes the cake |

Through ART you can learn so much and understand a lot about life because it deals with the physical and the unseen world. You'll av a wide range of thinking. I can only say this because its what I notice cuz its my field. So I don't know about SCIENCE. But I guess they contradict each other and sometimes they both need to work together for a purpose. ART IS LIFE! " Life is full of challenges. Economic difficulties, serious illnesses, family problems, and political unrest plague people on a daily basis. Secondly: I really don't believe science has made our life longer, what is the life expectancy of an average man? Talkless of a Nigerian? If science was all that human would life forever. Even with science, the world population still grow everyday and people still die everyday. The internet doesn't quick cut!. Even modern medicine can't give longevity!. Our forefathers live more years on this Earth than us, and they didn't have science. The robots were the genius overlords without emotion. The people in equilibrium fared well. They had no wars. They had achieved a scientific revolution. The only setback (apart from being emotionless) was the hunting/extermination of the feelers. Our forefathers didnt live long. For every old man you see in the village, at least 20 of his relatives died either at childbirth or at teenage years. This is absurd... how can u even think that?? people subscribe to music more than poetry.. Music is the key to the Soul.. & Science is the key to life... I was expecting to c d good old argument of Science and Art.. and like a guy earlier said, it's all about balance. Note that without science, the 3 basic needs of man would be difficult, almost impossible to achieve.. Think Food, Clothing, and Shelter. Without Science, how will u be able to express ur ideas to a greater audience... even Jesus had to travel with ships or canoes to spread the gospel. |

Herald9, I don't agree with you that poetry has not solved any of life's problem. I am sorry to say but I think you have a very limited understanding of what Poetry really is. Poetry is made of water. A fluid capable of taking any shape its environment, the soul behind it, that is, chisels it to. In essence, it has contributed to both good and evil. Let me brief you on the immaterial and how poetry has created a material healthy humas by seducing it. The immaterial precedes the material. And poetry is not a material thing but poetry is music and music is not material. Music alters mood and talk to you. It is like a brainwashing technique. The genre and integrity of the songs you listen to, subconsciously place a psychological, mental and translated to the physical awareness which is necessary for the wellbeing of man. Whether it is good or bad doesn't affect the fact that something has happened. Words are not intrinsically good or bad. |

This argument ought to be Literature vs. Science, not Poetry vs. Science. In my opinion, Literature is just as important as Science. The works of great writers like Lucian of Samosata, Mary Shelley, H. G. Wells, Jules Verne, etc. contributed immensely to science as we have it today. 1 Like |

It's called "balance". Nothing entirely survives without the other. So maybe we could stop trying to find how things differ from one another, and start discovering how each thread is woven into this beautiful tapestry we call life? Poetry/Art of any form gives succour to the soul. It gives everything it touches a burst of colour, and we do thrive in beauty. Science gives meaning to life, and makes it darn well easier to live. It's comfort, breakthrough, and less worry. Without art there would be no true enjoyment of science. Without science there'd be little incentive to create art. 4 Likes 1 Share |

All what you wrote is the merit or important of poetry not the why and wherefores the poetry is better than the science. It wouldn't have been fair of me to say your write-up is dead void of logic and reasonable arguments to espouse your opinion, I would have said so. Do you know what science entails? Do you know how science has improved the billions of life? Do you know how world could have been in the absence of science? Imagine life without science! Laykorn used the word could, so please note that before hanging him...well to me both have their part to play. I have seen poetry bring a smile on the face of many and have also seen the working wonders of science all around, Poetry made me a better person in life knowing how to drain and put in emotions into words,and without science we will be in a stone age ...maybe living in one horrid cave. |

OMA4U:ur love for poetry must be skewing ur judgement. how can u say poetry is as important as science. let me bring some facts to your attention. 1. the foam u slept on to wake up this morning is a product of science. 2. the tooth brush and paste u used this morning is a pdt of science. 3. the means by which the water u used this morning was extracted is a pdt of science. Even the device u re using to type and make this comments is a prdt of sci. I could go on and on. Every thing u ve done just this morning alone has science written all over it.
