English is a dynamic language with new words added regularly in the dictionaries as they are formed by the white race. If ours are not yet added, we should find means of getting them add them or we write our own dictionary so the world too can learn from us.
The way those words came to be in Nigeria/Africa is same way those dictionary words came to be in the west. Difference is that theirs were added but ours were not.
The world had kept defining us but it's time we also make our input and make our presence be felt.

Well, English is not my father's language but it's always good to interact with foreigners.

1. Go-Slow: Is not english but pidgin english. Spot the difference.

2. Wake: a watch kept beside the body of someone who has died... wake-keep

we have the right to invent our own words. Most of the so called English words are derivations from other languages. So park one side

I never said Nigerians are above corrections. I meant that as Nigerians, a few words should be alluded to Nigerians and their language. Nigerians can use them without seeming out of place. The British and Americans both speak english but have words not in each other's dictionaries.

Bootylicious is one word that baffles me in new dictionaries. Weird thing is that for centuries, the word 'booty' wasn't related to someone's buttocks.
i read somewhere the word bootylicious was first coined by snoop in 92 dre track f--k wit dre day. it meant being feeble or weak. beyonce later changed the meaning to being endwowed with...you know that already.

Let me add a few;

mannerless: Say she lacks manners cos there is no word like mannerless

Convocate - convoke: Do not say convocate, say convoke. No such word as convocate

Gist (verb) - Chitchat: Gist can not take verb form so no words like gisted and gisting

Cattle rearer - herder
There is no such word as cattle rearer or rearer. herder is the right word
Eg: Ugochukwu's father is a cattle rearer(wrong)
Ugochukwu's father is a herder(right)

Bros, thanks but you just get 2/4. Rearer and convocate can be found in some dictionaries.

It's a good thing at least we have our own kind of English or words

If the British and Americans can have there's
What's stopping us from having ours?

All languages keep evolving, and as we proceed, some words get accepted as proper/'legit' (especially factoring in the UK vs US discrepancies angle).

All right vs Alright for example, are both correct, and actually do mean slightly different things.

Nice 'heads up' though . . . we're all guilty of a few of the 'ten'.

If prescriptivists feel it necessary to remain enslaved by language, it's a free world. What I absolutely despise, however, is the smug, elististic audaciousness of prescriptivists who think it's their role to dictate how language must be used. There are concepts that are unique to Nigerians, and therefore, more mellisonant when expressed using the idiosyncratic peculiarities of Nigerian English.

Anybody who feels compelled to subject themselves to the contrived/non-existent rules of London RP English should know that they are just slaves to the language. One is truly liberated when, rather than confine their imaginations to service the sadistic gratification of prescriptivists, they reinvent language for the good of their wild imaginations.

Ah beg, carry go with your plumpy neologisms my Naija people, and free yaself from English enslavement, even if you choose to do it instalmentally! Viva la descriptivists! Viva Nigerian English!

We Africans seem to not have enough confidence to Africanise our English.

USA, Australia, Canada, all now have their own version of English.

@OP, severally also is not in the dictionary.
