@DucatiKing, i guess wake keeping is correct because it is a tradition where people gather round a corpse and keep vigil for some nights to see if the dead will wake up....so that process is called wake-keeping since it it a present continous term

Hi
The poster was not condescending or insulting at all

One pet peeve of mine is people who condemn others' grammar (English)
The OP was nothing like that...

I read his post and felt no pinch
Lay off the insults, okay?

I like the idea of Nigerianised English...or Pidgin used the way Sierra Leone people use their Krio

But I sincerely hope PLUMPY is not part of the new revolution
The word makes me go crazzy, I tell you....in a really, bad way
cheesy

Nothing like that. It is wake no more no less. You can use wakeful night though. Because frowning happens on the face, you don't say...why are you frowning face? Just as you don't say...I will sue you to court. You ask..why do you frown? I will sue you.

Again, the Op used severally wrongly when talking about disvirgin. Severally never means repeatedly or continuously. It means differently or distinctly. It is the adverbial form of the secondary meaning of several only.

Great. And you don't say night vigil. Since vigils happen in the night, no need to bring in night. So it is just vigil.

Again, you don't use I stand corrected when you say something you expect someone to disprove. You only wait, for that to happen and say I stand corrected.

Convocate - convoke: Do not say convocate, say convoke. No such word as convocate

Gist (verb) - Chitchat: Gist can not take verb form so no words like gisted and gisting

Cattle rearer - herder
There is no such word as cattle rearer or rearer. herder is the right word

That is the thing. Nigerian system has failed us and we resort to that saying. We can't standardise the so-called Nigerian English and we don't want to learn the standardised ones either. Only when you do international English tests, you will know and see the rot we are all in.

This thread reminds me one of my top favourites of Lagbaja's songs on English not being an expression with late Fela's voice in its background!
---
No dey fear to speak your mother tounge! I speak, you hear; when you speak, I understand - e don finish! English is over-hyped and not an expression!
---
In Lagbaja's voice in the song, "ekabo" is welcome, what is "ekunle"?

This Chinedu Rylan, Ph.D, can someone let me know how many research
papers he've published on one Nigerian language?. He's supposedly an Igbo man, so, I'll like know how many research work he've done on Igbo language. What research papers do he have on our own Hausa language?. How many research publication do he have on our own Yoruba language?. How about Igala, Efik, Kanuri, Fulani, Tiv, Ibibio, Ijaw, Urhobo, Bini?. e.t.c. Where are his research work on his own language?.

Should we stop using these words because they're made in Nigeria?.

Look, Americans do have their own brand of English as well, and it's not due to
ignorance as the article suggests but convenience. Jamaicans do have their
own brand of English as well. Language itself evolves. English Evolved from
languages such as Greek and Latin. Once upon a time English language was
once considered jargon by the Greeks and Latinos!. Same way the Brits today
think Americans speak jargon, but Americans don't give a fu*k what you think.
Africans, we must resist Neo-colonialism with all our might in any place or
form we find it. Go ahead and use those Nigerian made words. If possible
speak and write Pidgin English and be proud doing it.

The excuse given by colonial christian and islamic missionaries to Africa was
that our languages were tongue twisting and primitive, so they taught us their
languages; English, French, Portuguese, Spanish, instead. English is not our
first language, no!. Do not be shy making a mistake writing or speaking it.
Now, the missionaries are gone but our own African elites now act as conduits
for implementation of western neo-colonial rule.

Don't be shy, don't be afraid, Go ahead and use those words in Nigeria.

NB: Looking at the big picture.
