@worry357: Your words lack advice on the subject matter. In most culture if the bride price is not returned, it mean she is still his wife. No matter how little the amount may be.

When my sister got married sometime in 1998, my dad told the man to live with her for 5years and bring what ever he deems fit to him as his bride price. In this case if the marriage is over before the due date, there would be nothing to return.

but in Emenike case, the bride price was 20k and the father returned 1k to him that they don't sell their daughter, with the instruction that whenever she is dead, the body must be returned to him. This is enough reason for him to ask for the bride price.

20K?? Person dey fight on top 20K? Naira or dollars or pounds? 20K?

He had use of her as a wife for five years.
There is no way that the bride price should be re-payed
.
He is showing what a mean cheapscate he really is. This is probably why the marriage failed, because he is so mean.
He must forget the money and move on with his life.
He is lucky that the girls father does not charge him for keeping and feeding the girl as in tribal law they are still wed!
If he bought a car and returned it after five years, would he expect his money back?

Refunded, not re-payed (actually spelt repaid)

I think people are missing the point here. Return of bride price in Delta - Igbo, as in most Igbo cultures has nothing to do with the money paid as dowry. Most times, this is only a few hundred naira.
The significance of return of bride price is that you are cutting off every relationship with your inlaw's as being part of your family. This is why the father Inlaw said that he will be his son Inlaw forever!!!

The parents should return the pride price..it is cultural

As long as the bride price is not returned they are still married whether they live together or not.

Same with our culture

Please tell your friend to do anything possible to get his bride price returned

Without that they re still married

When you go buy a new car and some years later some vagabond armed robbers snatch the car from you, you do not go back to the dealer and ask for money back do you?

Like wise, bride price has been paid .... he don 'enjoy her' for 5 years .... now that it is over he should just move on.

I advise all above posters to travel to village more often and get acquainted with Naija cultural values. The guy is not broke, he's only doing what he's supposed to do. No man or woman can remarry in such cases. Smh for these indomie generation undecided

If returning the money is so important then he should try going through the traditional leader of the community before resorting to the court. My humble opinion.
Re: Her Father Refuse To Return His Bride Price. by tpiadotcom: 6:39pm On Apr 15, 2015
in the South South, South East, etc, seems the bride price must be returned by the ex-wife's new husband.

Refusal to do so means all children born to the woman and her new spouse, will be considered the ex husband's kids. This rule does not apply in a few parts of Abia state, according to google.

My question is, what if the original bride price was extremely high, like in the millions?

lord have mercy.

una like divorce and marriage dissolution for here sha. Is this normal or something else.

you are right , most Igbo culture as long as the bride price is not returned , they couple can't move forward . In some cases it's even the guy that refuses to take the bride price back just because the ex wife found a replacement first . The father in law should save the guy the stress since it's his daughter that doesn't want the marriage ( that is if it's not jazz)

As his name indicates,he is Igbo. In Igbo culture, divorce or separation is incomplete until the bride price is returned no matter how small or big it is. No too much grammar. Emenike should not go alone,he should go with his clan people and his father-in-law will return it. There is no force marriage in Igbo culture. No Igbo family will allow emenike or his wife to get married to their son/daughter as long as the dowry is not returned, unless they marry outside Igboland.

So many childish comments... The man is asking for his dowry because it'd the woman who abandoned the marriage against all pleadings and efforts by the man. If it was the man that sent her packing his demands would be a diff kettle of fish. I wonder if this happened to some commentators here if they won't do worse things... angry : angry

. Listen your 1000% wrong here, my father is a traditional ruler and no one can enlighten me on this issue. Emenike alone can decide to leave the money if he wants to, but as long as the wife has gone back to her father's house, the dowry MUST be returned. PERIOD!!!! There is no debate on this.

The father-in-law should return the bride-price as a symbol or ritual that the marriage is over.

Those accusing the husband of stingy are culturally uninformed....
