wow, great and delailed list.
I lived with my Uncle in Hadejia (Jiagawa) in the past and later did my youth service in Sokoto. I noticed the great difference in d hausa dialects spoken in both towns even though i could only understand little of what they were saying
Sokoto dialect seems like the hardest dialect of hausa language.
True. Aside the fact that some vowels are entirely changed in Sakkwatanci like 'fa' becomes 'yha', other vocabulary in Sakkwatanci are missing in there entirety in Kananci and other dialects.

Wow nice one but must everything end with "anci" Please any hausa in the building should tell us the meaning of "anci"
Lol! Well the 'anci' is just like 'ish' (or something similar) in English just like you say English, Danish, British, Sctottish, Irish etc.
That's why even languages outside Hausa are qualified with the same postfix. Like Yorubanci, Fulatanci, Turanci, Nupenci, etc.

Nowenuse:
1) Katsinanci-
spoken by natives of Katsina town/emirate (western/central parts of Katsina state) into Central parts of Zamfara state.

2) Dauranci -
spoken by natives of Daura town/emirate (northeastern/eastern parts of Katsina state)

3) Gudduranci (Katagumci) -
spoken by natives of Northern Bauchi zone (Katagum, Jama'are, Misau emirates)

4) Kananci -
Kano state dialect, also native to south/western parts of Jigawa state.
It is the most widely understood and spoken hausa dialect which serves as a central dialect, generally accepted as the official hausa dialect and lingua franca of all hausa native speakers and some 2nd language hausa (non-native) speakers.

5) Zazzaganci -
spoken by natives of Zaria town/emirate (northern half of Kaduna state).
This is the 2nd most widely spoken of the hausa dialects (very similar to Kano central dialect). It is the most spoken 2nd language hausa dialect in Nigeria as most of the non-native hausa speakers from the middlebelt & parts of the north-east speak it as a lingua franca.

6) Gobiranci/Arewanci -
Spoken by natives of Gobir town/emirate (northern parts of Sokoto state) also along the boundary into Niger republic.
It is the most similar hausa dialect to the hausa dialects of Niger republic.

7) Sakkwatanci -
Central/major dialect of Sokoto. Spoken by natives of Sokoto town, much of central & Southern Sokoto, western parts of Zamfara state and hausa natives of Kebbi state (Kebbi north).
It is the hausa dialect with the largest population of native speakers as much of Kano & Zaria speakers are non-natives to the dialect/subgroup.

cool Hadejanci -
Spoken by natives of Hadejia town and much of Eastern Jigawa state

9) Bausanchi -
Spoken by hausas in Bauchi town (southern Bauchi) and most hausanized minority groups of Bauchi south area

10) Khurwayanci, Damagaranci &
Aderanci. -
Hausa dialects mostly spoken by hausa speakers in Niger republic in Tillaberi, Tahoua, Dosso, Maradi, Agadez and Zinder regions with some immigrant speakers in Nigeria and extreme northern boundary hausa towns in Nigeria that share some boundary with Niger republic.

11) Ganaanci -
Spoken by native & non native hausa speakers in Ghana, Togo, Mali e.t.c

It must be noted that Hausa language has over the centuries become a widely used trade language in northern Nigeria and parts of the Middlebelt region of Nigeria, Niger republic, northern Ghana e.t.c and by so have developed many 2nd language speakers.

In Nigeria, hausa 2nd language/non-native/trade language speakers are found in Borno, Yobe, Adamawa, Plateau, Niger, Nasarawa, Taraba, Gombe, FCT, Southern half of Kaduna state, Southern 2/3 of Bauchi state and Southern 1/3 of Kebbi state.

The people of these places are not native hausa speakers and may be sometimes confused for native hausas by Southern Nigerians. However some of these northern minority groups are fastly loosing their own individual languages to hausas and this is strongly evident in Southern Bauchi areas, Northern Niger state e.t.c

The hausa dialect spoken by these millions of 2nd language hausa speakers is more of the Zaria dialect (Zazzaganci) & Kano dialect (Kananci).

Infact, the 2nd language hausa speakers in Nigeria (northern minorities) clearly outnumber the native hausa speakers.
This makes hausa the most spoken language in Nigeria.
Nice one OP what about koto kilo people of Togo

My brother, I have always been interested in proper learning of the Hausa language. Could you pls point me to the right direction? A suggestion of an audio book( if avail) will be preferred. Thanks a ton.

Well i really am limited in the area of hausa rescources n materials for learning.
Sorry but really i dont believe much in learning of a language through media but learning by living in the midst of the speakers of the language, especially for Nigerian/african languages.

sisisioge:

Oga I bear olive branch...just want to learn the language. Any audio book for it? I live in Lagos.Thanks. Baakeria

secretaryabdul:

Being a native hausa speaker and not in the academic line, i care less about Hausa language teaching material. But i may advise u to get a Hausa friend esp one from Kano (because kano dialect is easier to learn) hausa folks re friendly and like sharing their language - perhaps the reason 4 the popularity of their language which many haters envy. or better still tune in to a Hausa radio programs which is available in all major foreign radio broadcasters, bbchausa, voahausa, rfihausa, deutschwelle, etc. They offer news & other reports with special emphasis on Hausa communities. They re all available online.

Secretary abdul was right. Kano hausa dialect is the central dialect. If u learn it u can communicate with any other hausa speaker, but as a second language hausa speaker i suggest u learn hausa first from the 2nd language speakers because ours is just very extremely easy and simple.
So after learning from 2nd language speakers, u can graduate to learning to speak like the native hausa speakers.
So i suggest u try to learn hausa from people from Jos/Plateau areas, Taraba, Nasarawa, Niger, Abuja , Kaduna e.t.c. The kind of hausa we speak is very very simple, slow and easy to get.

That suffix 'anci' signifies speaking as in this Hausa group speaking. You will notice that the 'anci' comes after well known states or locations in hausaland. For instance Kannanci means Kano speaking dialect. Also turawa means Europeans so turanci means European speaking which equates to English language. However this should not be confused with 'iskanci' which was written by AnanseK. Lol I'll leave him to explain that one.
Hausa is a beautiful language and the people i.e the original Hausa people are not more different from the minority tribes surrounding them. The advent of the belligerent Fulanis and the retrogressive religion changed the once peaceful and friendly Hausawas to the present nightmare that they've become.

You speak as if the Fulani brought Islam to Nigeria. That's incorrect information. Hausa people were already Muslims before we Ful6e arrived in Nigeria.

I agree with you that Hausa people are not different from the tribes surrounding them. In fact they are the same stock and same people. But classifying Fulanis as " belligerent and their religion retrogressive" is your misguided opinion, not entirely your fault if I may add.

Going back to the suffix " anci" is I think grammatical disambiguation present in the Hausa language. Although the words are nouns but more specific than in English usage. In English a Frenchman speaks French and a Yoruba man speaks Yoruba. In Hausa a Frenchman ( bafaranshe) speaks Faransanci and the Yorubaman (Bayorube) speaks yorubanci . You can see the disambiguation in these two examples. In Hausa the language is differentiated from the citizenship or nationality. It is some times applied to behavior or attitude as in Dan Iska ( hooligan ) who displays iskanci ( hooliganism). The two words hooligan and hooliganism are both nouns but you can clearly see the disambiguation in this particular case. I hope this is helpful.

O yes the Hausas where already Muslims but who introduced the form of islam into Hausaland? The fulanis. I know the history too well. Real hausas are very easy going people even with their Islam your people came. See the difference between the Kwara yoruba Muslims and those from the southern tip of Yorubaland. The reason is pellucid.

Yujin is very correct and let us not deny facts.
The fulanis were the ones corrupted the hausas to the kimd of fanatic islam they are practicing today.
If not for the arrival of the fulanis, the hausas would have been liberal muslims just the Yoruba muslims today and religion would have not been as dangerous as it is in Northern n central Nigeria today.

I disagree, there is no evidence to support your claims. If you look at Senegal, Mauritania, Mali, Niger, Chad, Sierra Leone, Burkina Faso, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, etc. you don't see Ful6e (Fulani) practising 'extreme' forms of Islam.

In fact, amongst the Mbororo'en of Nigeria, Islam is hardly practiced. So you need to stop generalising and get your facts straight.
