I like that as much as this team is known, there remains no certain hitman. With most teams, defenders know which player to mark, but with Nigeria, you'll have to mark everyone. Some may choose to focus on Kelechi, who ordinarily is the player whose clips are easiest to get off the net. Others may mark Moses, afterall he made waves with Gent. Some may focus on Isaac, he's managed to be revered based on U17 success. But what happens when the relatively unknown Awoniyi bursts forward? Who marks Musa's spiralling shots? Who would see little Chidera burst past a marked Iheanacho to pip the ball in? What are the odds that Matthew, Sokari and Ifeanyi can move forward from their positions and score? What dangers can arise with a lurking newbie, Godwin? Seriously, WHO WILL YOU MARK?
that is why I like dis team. The scoring responsibility is not place on a single or two players. The Mexicans tried marking out our key players(NACHO Awo, yahaya) in d final of u-17 wc not knowing about other weapons wey de our arsenal.smiley if I remember one guy, Okon, and Mohammed's Messilike free kick goal sank them to d bottom of d deep blue sea. This Team is a Complete one!

Iheanacho’s Dad Tips Him To Emerge World Cup MVP

Kelechi Iheanacho will shine bright at the FIFA U20 World Cup in New Zealand and take the world by storm, according to his father, James.

18-year-old Kelechi Iheanacho has been in fine form for the Manchester City U21’s, after recovering from an ankle injury which initially threatened to rule him out of the World Cup, and he’s expected to be one of the stars of the competition.

His father, James, has told SL10.ng that his son will be the shining light at the competition.

“I told you when you asked me before if he would make the World Cup and I said yes. And I must tell you that he won’t just be a squad member at the World Cup, my son will shine so bright and become the best player at the tournament because I know his talent,” James Iheanacho told SL10.ng.

“He’s a young boy that has a lot ahead of him and his future is bright. And I can tell you that this will be the beginning of great things for Kelechi, just as he has shown at Manchester City,” Iheanacho Snr. said.

Iheanacho was the first to arrive in New Zealand for the U20 World Cup, and was subsequently joined by the rest of the team ahead of their group opener against Brazil on June the 1st.

Aaaaa just 3 days to go(nigeria time), 2 days to go(new zealand time).

Can't wait to see the commencement of this tourney.

Great one to everyone contributing to this thread. But Please can we reduce the way we quote those long posts. We could still make reference to the post if we wish to add to the long posts.

It really make things difficult here, where you'll have to scroll, scroll and scroll to get to d next post.

Brazil is really struggling with scoring goals.. Even struggling with australia(that is not even participating in the tourney).

This is really a good news to me. Brazil is surely going down on June 1.

A springboard for stars of the future

Back in 1977, all the talk was of the following year's FIFA World Cup™ in Argentina. However, this was also the year that saw the inauguration of new competition which has since mushroomed into the most important global tournament in youth football: the FIFA U-20 World Cup.

What began as an experimental construct with just 28 matches has grown into a major 52-game event. The early editions attracted modest crowds of curious locals, but the tournament is now a firm fixture in the diaries of scouts and national coaches alike. The 20th FIFA U-20 World Cup is about to begin in New Zealand, and will again provide a first taste of a major global stage for the stars of the future. We look back in time and pick out some of the players who went on to greatness from the springboard of this celebrated youth tournament.

It indeed began life as the FIFA World Youth Championship with the inaugural 1977 event in Tunisia. The first winners were Soviet Union, with midfield general Vladimir Bessonov playing the starring role. The first winner of the adidas Golden Ball went on to enjoy an illustrious international career, which brought him Olympic gold in 1980 and three appearances at the FIFA World Cup, in 1982, 1986 and 1990.

The tale of Bessonov suggested the new tournament had real potential to uncover future stars, and the 1979 edition in Japan proved it beyond a shadow of a doubt. A certain Diego Maradona captivated the footballing world with a first glimpse of his astonishing potential as he and an outstanding Argentina side claimed the honours.

The South Americans proved unable to defend their crown in Australia two years later, although the 1981 Albiceleste did include a striker who would go on to score the decisive goal in a FIFA World Cup Final just five years later, Jorge Burruchaga. Uruguay legend Enzo Francescoli also shot to prominence in Australia, and the Golden Ball went to Romulus Gabor, a pivot and stalwart of a very good Romania team in the following years. In Mexico two years later, Brazilian prodigy Geovani broke new ground, leaving in his wake the likes of Marco van Basten and Bebeto to become the first player awarded both the Golden Ball and the Golden Boot.

Robert Prosinecki then emerged as the best player of the 1987 edition. The elegant playmaker was by no means the only major talent to emerge from this particular global showdown though, as his fellow Yugoslavs Zvonimir Boban, Predrag Mijatovic and Davor Suker pushed him all the way.

The label 'Golden Generation' was liberally bandied about at the 1991 edition in Portugal, where the host nation defended the crown. However, the brightest star was not Luis Figo, Rui Costa or Joao Pinto, but a player by the name of Peixe, whose later career was surprisingly unspectacular compared to his famous contemporaries.

Over the next few years, future headline-makers such as Adriano, Hidetoshi Nakata, Fernando Morientes and Paulo Wanchope graced the world's most important youth tournament, before a veritable glut of future stars emerged from the 1997 event. World champions Argentina featured Juan Roman Riquelme and Esteban Cambiasso, although the adidas Golden Ball was taken home by Nicholas Olivero. The Uruguayan rarely hit the heights in the senior game, but other starlets that year went on to fame and glory, including Thierry Henry, Michael Owen, David Trezeguet and Nicolas Anelka.

By this stage, it had become apparent that the nascent superstars unearthed by the FIFA U-20 World Cup would not necessarily walk away with the individual awards. The trend was confirmed at the 1999 tournament in Nigeria, which featured Ronaldinho, Roque Santa Cruz, Peter Crouch, Xavi and Diego Forlan. In such exalted company, many commentators at the time were surprised that the Golden Ball would eventually go to Seydou Keita, but he went on to win the UEFA Champions League twice with Barcelona.

Javier Saviola, winner of both major individual awards at the 2001 tournament in Argentina, would himself go on to play his part in the Catalan success story, and also join an elite group of players to feature not only for Barça but also their arch-rivals Real Madrid. The contenders Saviola beat off in his quest for glory included a young man by the name of Kaka, who would be named FIFA World Player of the Year in 2007.

When the tournament visited the United Arab Emirates in 2003, it was the start of magnificent careers for Andres Iniesta, Dani Alves and Javier Mascherano, although the main attraction that year was a relative unknown named Ismaeil Matar. The attacking midfielder has now made more than 100 appearances for UAE.

In all, six players have succeeded in winning both the adidas Golden Ball and Golden Boot at the FIFA U-20 World Cup. Geovani and Saviola blazed the trail, to be followed by Sergio Aguero in 2007, Ghana's Dominic Adiyiah in 2009, and Henrique in 2011. The list is completed by no less a figure than three-time FIFA World Player of the Year Lionel Messi, who claimed the personal double in 2005. The gifted forward has, of course, already earned himself a place in the lexicon of football's greats.

As New Zealand 2015 kicks off, Messi will of course be preparing for 6 June's UEFA Champions League final. Up against him in Berlin will be another former Golden Ball winner at the U-20 World Cup: Paul Pogba. The Juventus midfielder was the outstanding player as France took home the title at Turkey 2013, and was ably assisted by the likes of Kurt Zouma, Geoffrey Kondogbia and Lucas Digne. This edition was also graced by rising stars such as Juan Bernat, Paco Alcacer and Harry Kane.

But who is destined to follow in the footsteps of these famous names in 2015? Part of the attraction is that we cannot possibly know in advance, but we can say with great certainty that the passionate Kiwi fans will be offered an early glimpse of the stars of the future.

That's just the way life is sometimes... Being the mvp or top scorer is no guarantee of an illustrious career at the topmost level. Case study is dominic adiyiah of Ghana. But some odas lyk messi, pogba, aguero etc hv built on attaining such honors and are doing great at the top level today.
Anoda thing is not every player that'll be great in yrs to come will cart home individual awards. 8 of these awards will be on display at NZ but over 40 top stars will be born... #TeamSuperFlyingEagles

Senegal ready for first U-20 World Cup

Senegal will kick-off their first ever U-20 FIFA World Cup campaign in Hamilton against Portugal on Sunday 31 May.

The young Lions booked their spot at New Zealand 2015 after securing a runners-up finish at the U-20 African Championship on home ground in March.

The hosts started their continental campaign on the back foot with a 1-3 defeat to Nigeria in their opening Group A encounter, before drawing 2-2 with Côte d’Ivoire and clinching a last-minute 4-3 win over Congo to go through to the last four.

Senegal went on to beat Mali 2-1 in the semifinals, before falling again to the Flying Eagles in the final showdown.

To compete at the international event, head coach Joseph Koto made six changes to his squad, calling up keeper Khadim Ndiaye, midfielders Abdoulaye Traoré and Fallou Niang and forwards Mamadou Thiam, Pape Diène Faye and Rémi Nassalane, while leaving out keeper Lamine Ba, defender Racine Coly, midfielder Soro Mbaye and forwards Alassane Diouf, Omar Goudiaby and Sékou Goudiaby.

And the former Teranga Lions boss, who will rely on hard-working skipper Roger Gomis and the firing trio of Sidy Sarr, Ibrahima Wadji and Moussa Koné, appears confident they can perform in New Zealand on the big stage.

“We are happy with how we did in the continental finals and that has showed us that we can be confident going to our first U-20 World Cup,” Koto said.

Senegal will kick off their Group C campaign against Portugal in Hamilton on 31 May, before facing Colombia on 3 June and Qatar three days later at the same venue.

Welcome to the club. Talented lad. So much talents in the team. Brace up for a great tournament.

I checked through some predictons for the tournament and I was shocked that almost everyone outside Africa predicts Brazil to beat us hands.-down. While a Nigerian victory has an odd of close to 5, a Brazilian victory is barely 1.

Great! They will have no idea what had hit by the time it's 4am Nigerian time on June 1st.

Coach upbeat after second straight Brazil U20 win

Brazil U20 coach Rogerio Micale was upbeat after his team rounded up their build-up for Monday’s World Cup showdown against Nigeria with a 1-0 win over Australia.

Recently appointed coach Micale said after the match: "I am very happy with what we presented in Australia, mainly with the conduct of the players in the friendlies and trainings.

“We created a lot of chances and could have won by a bigger score.

“Also we were tested in defence, which was great for our preparation."

The right back João Pedro scored the match winner for the Samba Stars to give them their second straight win leading up to the high-profile Group E clash against the Flying Eagles of Nigeria.

Brazil also pipped Portugal 1-0 in another test game also in Australia.

Striker Marcos Guilherme and defender Jorginho shone for the five-time U20 world champions.

Monday’s showdown against Nigeria in New Plymouth will kick off at 1pm local time, which will be 2am also on Monday in Nigeria as New Zealand is 13 hours ahead.

Brazil vs Australia

Marcos (Jean) - João Pedro (Rodrigo), Marlon (Iago), Lucão (Léo Pereira), Jorginho (Caju); - Jaja, Alef, Andreas Pereira (Boschilia) - Gabriel Jesus (Jean Carlos), Judivan, Marcos Guilherme (Malcom).
