When operating normally your VTM-4 light means the vehicle is in traction control mode. HOWEVER, if the light just came on when you were driving it is an indication that you have a problem with the engine that is causing the VTM system to think the vehicle is in traction control mode because of a loss of engine power or misfire.

Here's how that happens: on a Honda, the way the vehicle restores traction is by reducing engine power to the point where the wheels don't spin as fast and thereby restores traction to a slipping wheel (slipping wheels spin faster than the other wheels). Conversely, when there is a reduction in engine power that is abnormal, the VTM system "thinks" that the engine power is being reduced to restore traction and it triggers the light.

In almost all cases, the light is being triggered by an idle speed control valve malfunction or in some cases by an EGR valve malfunction. It may or may not turn on the check engine light. This problem was fairly common on Pilots in 2004 and 2005 but certainly isn't limited to just those years.

Take the car to a Honda dealer or to a mechanic and have them check for stored codes in your powertrain control module. I think you're going to find that there is a code for an idle speed control valve malfunction or an EGR valve malfunction. The idle speed control valve is warranted for 8 years or 80,000 miles; the EGR for 3 years or 50,000 miles. Your Pilot is probably still in warranty and if so the repairs would be made at no charge

Thanks so much, that was comprehensive, it does so while warming it up (idling).

The mileage is just 73,000.

I just changed my rear shocks and after driving for a while I had my ABS and VTM4 lights on. Could these be the EGR or ICV

Thanks all,

Planning to take the car for scanning : but I will appreciate any further idea of what the problem might be.

Thanks.. lomomike, lexusgs430, Gazzuzz.

Scanning would help narrow down the possible issues.
NB: Would be better if you also invested in a scanner. A basic one would do basic reading and is better than not having a scanner. They are not too expensive, if you got someone coming over from the west, £10.00 would get you a good scanner.

Start by checking the state & level of your differential fluid (that big round thing inbetween your back tyres).
You may need something like this.
A VTM-4 fluid.

Do you have the 1 litre bottles of this vtm4 and how much?

How do you separate noises caused by this and wheel bearing noises?

Does not come in 1 litres.

Back bearing noise is not too audible, if it is, most likely the rear differential.

I've a 2010 Honda Pilot. The VTM-4 light started showing suddenly one hot afternoon and I noticed the car became sluggish. Then I also noticed that whenever I off the car and in it again the VTM-4 light would go, after some time it would come on again. I kept using this technique. After about 2 months, the car graduated to misfiring and jerking suddenly when in motion. If I off and on the again it will start working fine. But about 4 days ago I started hearing a particular kind of noise coming from the engine side. And when I put on the car now the VTM-4 light comes on immediately now, it doesn't run for some time before coming on like before. The off and on technique have stopped working too and the movement is bad.

Can all this be solved by just changing this oil? How can this oil be changed? I mean which part of the vehicle or engine requires this oil?

Also how can I get the oil

Thanks.

Scanning and diagnosis first.

Engine noise is different from wheel noise.

If your vtm-4 light stays on continuously. It means your car is in front wheel drive mode only. The best way to fix it is to first troubleshoot the vtm-4 system to discover what's wrong. Mine had the issues. I was lick to fix it myself

How did u fix it yourself? I'm having exact same issue
1. Vtm-4 light is off when starting
2. Comes on after driving a mile or so. Doesn't go off no matter how many times I press the button.
3. Car feels sluggish with sound and vibration from the back end. Doesn't accelerate well and has some noise from the front end too.
4. Engine feels underpowered too
