Amen, c/s 100%
If he was asking this question to new world continents or countries like South Africa, America, Brazil, and etc this question would make more sense but Nigeria lol, where 99% of people are black. The op is thinking and leaning towards ancestry not families, which is a whole different kettle of fish

I meant nigerian people, not the country of nigeria itself.

I think the Briggs fit in to this. Maybe Saotome and Princippe have this kind of people than a nigerian population. People like Sade Adu.

Exactly, non Nigerian African communities are mainly ghanians, except the Fons who are at the fringe of the border. Non Africans are expatrates that never mix with Nigerians (in any known significant number), such as indians that were employed by old Western regions free education scheme in the 60s to 70s. Industry attract foreigners to Nigeria back then and not sight seeing as is the norm in East Africa. Likewise, white man die at the bite of our mosquitos, so we are saved of the Boar/Zulu experience. I think the Briggs fit in with op's idea. Nigerian culture may not readily absorb or allow any alien to uproot one of their own just like that.

exactly, you took the words right out of my mouth

Not all nigerians live in nigeria.

Ancestry is not the point of reference because the time frame I'm looking at is a more current one

True but the nigerians outside Nigeria are low compared to the numbers inside Nigeria, and most are first to second generation Nigerians overseas any way. If your looking more current then I must say that I don't fully agree with your view that all Nigerians have some current mixture in their family, you must remember Nigeria is not America or Brazil where it is a multicultural/multiracial/multiethnic society or country it never was

Most nigerians are not on ancestry.com.

True and I think cause most Nigerians are not concerned or already know or are comfortable who they are culturally in how they identify themselves

Sade Adu, Nneka, caroline Ekanem, Lillian Bach, Ramsey Noauh, lola omotayo, are good examples cause they were all born in Nigeria but are all of mixed ethnicity, culture and race. People like that are so low in numbers in Nigeria

I think if you check every family in Nigeria, 99% will have somebody who is mixed.

ie assuming you factor in Nigerians who do not live in Nigeria or who are resident outside of their ethnic origins.

current time, not ancestry.

@Bolded

I am not too sure about that. 99% is a bit on the high side, don't you think?

I don't think it is that simple, because it depends on what mix you are talking about; race, ethnicity/tribe and etc and also do you mean immediate family or distant family or ancestors. First of all it is obvious majority or almost all nigerian families are Black Nigerian, only a few families in Nigeria are Interracial marriages for example arab & Nigerian or White European & Nigerian so I disagree in the race part. When it comes to Ethnicity/Tribal for the most part people marry within their tribe then outside their tribe, thats why majority of families in Nigeria are of one tribe however mixed tribal marriages have increased but not big enough to make a difference plus have you forgotten that some Nigerians that do happen to be mixed traditionally claim their fathers tribe for identitiy but that old school rule is slowly changing. Distant family it depends and ancestors is debatable to a extent but ancestors are not direct families in the end of the day. So to me their are many Nigerian families with no mixed people in it.

The post above by @anonymous is absolutely
correct.

@ tpia, I remember when I flew into Nigeria on a visit
last year, I went through the Change of Name
sections of some newspapers out of intense
curiosity and I noticed that MOST Nigerian
marry from within their ethnic groups.

I zeroed in on Yoruba-Nigerians as one of
my case studies and realised that on average,
ONLY 1 in 10 Yoruba actually marry outside
their ethnic groups on average.

Most of the inter-ethnic marriges involved more
of Yoruba men getting married to women
from other ethnicities. From my observation
of the Change of Name pages, More of the Yoruba got married to Edo and Delta state
names. Also most of the Yoruba also
married from mainly Anioma area of Delta, and
to some extent, Akwa Ibom/Cross River or Rivers
state women.

yes, Yoruba males marry outside the tribe a lot.

Yuuup! Atleast as far as i know. There are a lot of others, but mostly in rural areas. In some places people aren't even allowed to marry outside their village.

When it comes to Nigerian families having mixed race people, I'd say that the Kalabaris and Okrikas of Port Harcourt top the list.

for the south perhaps [northerners would top those numbers], not sure if they have more than Igbos or Yorubas, but its possible.

Its also likely the admixture would be from the father, instead of from the mother which is more common with the other two tribes mentioned.

that would be probably be a section of the population. Such practices could be difficult to sustain in the long run.
