It was one faithful morning after my regular job search on the internet job Search portal, i came across a job advert it was about a 5 star hotel recruitment, i read the requirement with interest.

All the requirement fit my Qualification so, i decided to apply for the job as a store Manager.
Three days later i was invited for an interview, i was excited to attend my first job interview with high hope of landing the job.

I did all i could practising, Reseaching about the company Mission and Vision.
The first stage of the interview was a writen test and thank God i pass the first stage and was shortlisted for the second stage of the interview.

I felt so happy that faithful day when i got a congratulatory massage for the next stage of the interview after three days.
On the final day of the interview, about 100 people were invited, although there were some gate crashing people waiting for slite opportunity to grab.

The interview was going on well but this one word "yea" i used instead of yes denied me my first job.
I was told to go home that they will get back to me, at that moment i knew that was the end, i felt so disappointed dragged my feet like someone that was heat by a truck.

My advice to job seekers is that they should always use the right words during interview to avoid this kind of situations.

Why do you think you are the right person for the job? You answered "shit". Blame your outlook and not "YEAH ".

Interviews should be expression of ideas, it shouldn't be the exhibition of English language. Intelligence should be looked out for, not eloquence.....Emancipate yourselves from mental slavery jor

I am very guilty of the offense.
My boss warned me that it is not telephone etiquette. I don't even know when I say it.
I used ' dt' instead of that to answer one of my madams memo. That one became another issue of its own.

In all, we should try as much as possible to drop abbreviations. Habits are easy to pick but difficult to drop.
Same thing goes to all the people that exclaims, 'otu ocha', anowaa m like, like seriously, jeez, e speakilekwe..... I see myself saying e speakilekwe in public places and its really messed up.

At an interview, I said; "I would really like to work with YOU GUYS"...that was pointed out and marked the end of the interview.

Please be formal always at interviews.

it's either the interviewers are dumb or you're lying

"yeah" means yes and it's formal

But it was a formal interview...

Anyways it all depends on the job role....... If you have some mega skill, lets say programming skill and that is what they are looking for.. trust me 'Yea' is the least of problems... A job that 'Yea' can disqualify you is errrmmmm...

Yea is not wrong because it is an english word but using it in a formal environment is not right especially when the person is above you.

Yea can only be accepted in an informal environment where courtesy is not too required.

it is possible that simple word might eliminate you from an interview where they are looking for little error to eliminate any candidate to de congest the population. I know how someone loss a job just because of coughing without permission. Anything can happen in Nigeria. All is because of high rate of unemployment.

If there is good numbers of available jobs, interviewer will be on the look for brains, integrity and talent and not little error that won't affect the firm in any way.

Op, are u saying this out of your discretion or it was what they told you? cos 'yeah' to me depending on d stage of d interview may have little or no impact on the outcome of the interview, besides weda u did well or not it's still same old "we would get back to you" that the interviewer will still tell u, so I don't think it may be cos of what u claimed u said.

why not go and use it for you to know that what he just said is true and is not of his own.

My dear it is very much possible and that was the reason for the loss because real 5 star hotels give the very best superb services you cannot get anywhere other than 5 star hotels. That is where you will meet dangotes, presidents, prime ministers, kings and queens and the very rich and most influential in the world.so you will answer queen Elizabeth yea in a 5 star hotel presidential suite?other countries are not jungle like Nigeria where anything goes.

Jarus:

I seriously doubt that was the cause of your not landing the job, moreso for a store keeper position in a hotel. It is highly unlikely that the interviewer is a core HR person who will give attention to such little things. I seriously doubt saying "yea", instead of "yes" can deny you "store keeping" job in a hotel, not a newscasting job, not a job in GE, not a job in even KPMG.

I have similar experience with same word: yea.

My own was probably worse, I was expressly corrected by the interviewer (the COO of a downstream oil company). "Please don't say 'yeah' to me again", she expressly told me in that chat (Meet the COO chat - after passing all previous stages). I apologized and the conversation continued.

Guess what? I mistakenly answered "yeah" again less than 2 minutes after that correction. She didn't bother to say anything the second time, she knows this guy's case is irredeemable(LOL).

And I still got the job.

This was 2008 as an entry level candidate, and this woman was the most feared in that company.

My case was worse, as I was expressly corrected and I still committed it the second time. But they didn't think it was strong enough for me not to get the job.

***
Related: I was in another interview few years after and I used "guys" to describe the management of my then current company. I said "These guys have done well managing this company, but I needed to move one..." One of the interviewers - again a woman - interjected, "who are the guys?", and I told her I was referring to the Executive Management of my then company. She commented that it wasn't polite of me to address my management as "guys", and we continued our conversation.
i guess u got it becus u over qualified

Sorry bro I will take it it's not meant to be. No one denies you job offer because you said "yes" instead of yes. Maybe in Nigeria they do. I have interviewed people from all race, ethnicity or tribe, some of them barely speak English, have a thick accent or just left from their countries into the United States. What employer look for is what you have to offer and overlooks whatever else until you mess up your job.

When I was about defending my project,

I am "gonna" start by introducing my topic.

The external:- why did u use non-parametric?

Me. :- after testing for all the three assumptions of Anova, goodness of fit, normality and homogenty of variance, I "kinda" discovered that it violated the normality test and the variance was not independent.

The external :- did u actually carry out the test urelf?

Me. :- "yea".

The external :- why did u use FRIEDMAN non-paragmetric apart from ur data violating the assumptions of ANOVA?

Me. :- "coz" I "wanna" compare the difference in the MEAN.

My HOD was just looking @ me like a fool, my supervisor was laffing like a goat,

After my presentation, the woman was like,

"Mr gonna wanna u can back to ur seat"

All my coursemates started calling me "gonna wanna"
