Consultville:
Telecommunications tower operators spend some N175 million every day on diesel which is used to power generators at their towers housing base transceiver stations (BTS) that make it possible for Nigerians to use GSM service to make and receive calls.

Telecom towers house base stations that Global System for Mobile communications (GSM), Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) and 4G internet service providers use to deliver services to their customers.

Nigeria CommunicationsWeek investigations revealed that a co-located tower which houses 3 to 5 base stations use 20KVA generator to supply power while a tower that houses a single base station uses 15KVA generator. More so, each generator consumes 50 litres of diesel per day especially in recent years when public power system is highly erratic.

Nigeria Communications Week gathered that presently, towers run on generator in an average of 20 hours a day. This means that 25,000 of towers in the country that use generators consume some 1.25million litres of diesel a day.

It was learnt that this quantity of diesel consume by generators at different towers cost tower operators about N175million at diesel pump price of N140 per litre.

Nigeria is never an ideal environment for start ups speaking from experience. It costs more to initialize a business but once you can withstand the storms and survive the first three years you've struck gold!

Give a Nigerian the right environment and tools, you see them dance amongst the stars.

Just stylishly deduct N10 from 20 million Nigerians like you have been doing, you get you 175 million naira per day back.

Lies. The generator that powers telecom base stations conserve diesels a lot.It is not that the generators powers heavy equipment in the base stations.I know a base station close to my house and it's not everyday that they refuel the generator. They come at least one's or twice in a month depending on the number of days or weeks phcn retain power.

What baffles is, after spending all these money on diesel and petrol generators, government is unable to recover these money back in form of tax. Kudos to Buhari for appointing a man who has delivered aggressively in Lagos, hope he gets the job done and revamps Nigeria's ailing tax system.

what are you talking about undecided undecided undecided undecided by the way, telcos don't pay taxes, their customers do. Tax them more, MTN will get the money from you.

That's why we are there to offer top notch power solutions to these BTS and backbone telecom sites to effectively increase uptime and reduce deisel consumption drastically.

Our engineers are well trained to perform retrofit and power swapout without any downtime.

You are just a call away.

A good number of greenfield sites are linked to the power grid, at least almost all those I was involved in constructing.

The problem, at least in such cases is the lack of power supply through the dedicated transformers, making the operators resort to burning diesel to keep the stations up.

Nice PR job anyway. Big Boss Clem will be happy to see this.
Re: See How Much Telecom Tower Operators Spend Daily To Power BTS by mykel010(m): 9:33pm On Aug 23, 2015
I really doubt they spend up to that. Most Tower housing BTS have a Hybrid Inverter there, which runs for 12hours(assuming there isn't any power supply within that same duration) and then the Gennie automatically comes back on(if there isn't any power supply then),thereby charging the batteries to be efficient for another 12hours.
Be it as it may, should they be spending such an amount even after installation of Hybrid Inverters, then that's some.huge expenditure(altho they are making waaaaaaaaaay more than that everyday via transmission and coverage).

firstly..dis writeup is flawed because i can state categorically that not all towers run on diesel for 24hrs. Most operate on a hybrid power system interchanges power supply between Solar, Generators and domestic power.
Secondly dis writeup did not take into count the operating cost of each telecom company or are we supposed to split the amount among all the Telco's
Finally......with millions of subscriber buying nothing less than 100 recharge vouchers daily...im sure that daily expense is well taken care of.
who are we kidding here??.....iv seen beggars on the street with telephones!!

Don't believe them they are inflating the figures it is a big lie. If so why cant they invest in solar and other sources of energy if they have common sense.

@ the bolded, Who taught you that? http://www.thenigerianvoice.com/news/97511/37/nigerian-mobile-operators-pay-35-tax-report.html

Back to topic, what i meant was, they spend billions generating their own electricity using petrol and diesel, just like Nigerians also spend billions or even trillions nationwide daily generating their own electricity, which means our petrol pump stations and oil marketers are earning billions and trillions, yet our tax system doesn't capture much of this money being sank into the oil sector consumption

And they have to pay staff, pay insurance, maintain the towers, replace the generators when they get stolen or break down permanently, do upgrades so that you can watch whizkid on your tablet, expand the network so that you can talk with your great grandmamma in your village, spend money on scholarships and training programmes, sponsor competitions, replace old and worn-out machinery, train staff abroad so that they can maintain your equipment, pay adhoc staff....eg those who dig tunnels for the wires, and pay compensation and buy land where they can erect towers.Oh...and they have to pay their expat staff very well....because do you expect someone to come from UK to live in Ajegunle or Nyanya...with all the problems. And they have to pay for security too...for staff and some vital equipment.

You Nigerians should stop demanding awoof. If you want empty hen, glow, and hair tell to be taken over by government, fine. Just don't complain when services start going bad because no money.

Fine but..
MTN has 70million subscribers.
On the average, they recharge 100 naira daily.
100 × 70,000,000 = 7,000,000,000(1 billion naira) daily
1 billion × 30 days = 30 billion naira.
Trust they've got to be making one hell of a profit. Else they'll fold up.

See my original statement...it has been modified.

The problem is that power supply in Nigeria is not working. If it was working...we would have been paying less.

Doc its not just about nigeria. These telecom firms rip us off consistently with their rates. The excuse of power supply is tenable but the truth is they carry out their surveys before investing in any country considering all pros and cons. What about a country like Ghana that has power supply that is more stable than Nigeria. In Ghana the rates are high as well. Believe me doc these telcos make enough profit. We the subscribers absorb the effect.
