No, you are not entirely right. I teach in a private school and My experience is different. First of all, if you teach in a school where a child's school fees is #5000 or there about, it's not feasible to get a pay above #9000. I guess u know why.

I teach in a private school where their fees is #180,000 for day-students and much more for boarders. So you see my salary is okay compared to my needs. I get some experiences which is the inspiration behind my working there. Stop the single story.

Our govt prefer projects that can boost their ego than those that can solve masses problem. Is building of universities more important than creating enabling environments for job creation.

Then our entrepreneurs will rather invest on short term profit yielding ventures like private uni than to create adequate jobs for the masses.

People like you would prefer earning N50,000 monthly while you spend N30,000 on transport and medications.

Some of those teachers have alternative earnings. Most spend N0.00 on transport.

Everybody love juicy figures, but it wont come easy to all; stop discouraging the young minds. You also need to quit the hasty generalisation as most private secondary schools in Lagos pay more than your estimate.

l'm glad I made up my mind long ago that private schools teaching wasn't for. The pressure from family to apply to some of these "budding" private almost crushed me but I stood my ground. thank God today I ve landed my dream job. if u engage in this private teaching job, it takes the grace of God and serious connection to get some thing else. 'cos u will never have time to do a serious job search.

Thank you OP for this post. This is exactly what I pass through last year when I was working in one private secondary school. There was a term I handle upto 5 subjects. I never heard rest of mind then . I have to write lesson notes on daily basis Even during holiday, the school will still organize holiday lessons just to make sure that the teachers did not travel. Even with the peanut they paid, teachers were still owed salaries. I resigned honorably September last year to set-up a business with the help of my brother. Still believing God and hoping of getting a good job.

All the points you raised have some form of truth in them,in fact they are all true, but I would still advise you start somewhere. I was in the Same situation , taught in a private school after I lost my bank job when I was tired of sitting at home and taught with all my heart. I was earning a tithe of my bank monthly salary and it was always late, like 38th to 40th of the month. The splitting of salary towards the end of the term is mostly because the school has spent all the money they collected at the beginning of the term not because they want the teacher back. It was tough and I would say going back to live with my parents softened the load. So I still ate one meal at home and six during weekends.

Infact I taught with all my heart, that I often fixed Saturday classes, before long I got an offer in another school with 10k difference, I didn't go because I was teaching ss3 and they were preparing for waec. I taught those students more than I was ever taught in school, since I was marking waec too, I brought the marking scheme to class and we solved the immediate past question and marked it together. Out of a class of 27, there was 7 A1s in maths.

Today I am teaching in a higher institution and my monthly salary is equivalent to my yearly salary in the school even higher than what I earned in the bank and it would constantly increase till retirement. That private school prepared me for this work. There are schools that pay 300k to their teachers but teaching in a school that pays 13k might prepare you and give you job experience for your cv.

There are Private schools and there are private schools. op is definitely talking about the below N50k school fees private school. Some schools pay as much as N1.5m and above per term. Those ones don't joke with the quality of their teachers and you can bet that they pay them really good.

If you are teaching where you are paid 20k or less, my brother know that your school is a mushroom school or you were never qualified to teach in the first place.
No, B.A(Ed) or B.sc(Ed) will accept to teach with that ridiculous price. Infact an N.C.E or T.C. 11 won't accept it, cos they know they are hot cakes in the educational sector.
So, leave teaching for teachers.
