bro shield more light on how we can rear this thing
The animal reproduces very quickly and in good numbers. A fully grown female Grasscutter after gestation, carries the pregnancy for 140 – 150 days and deliver about twice a year.

Each pregnancy produces average of four to seven young ones per birth. Sometimes up to ten, that means one female Grasscutter could produce 8 – 20 other Grasscutters in a year

It grows big and very fast too. Grasscutter is one of the biggest rodent in Africa. A fully mature female or male that is ready for market weighs between 3.5kg for the female and 4.5kg for the male.

While measuring 45cm to 60cm in body length. The standing height is between 25 to 30cm. The body size of a fully grown male is about the size of a nine inches block.

A good number of Grasscutter is consumed yearly but most of them still comes from the wild through hunters who goes into the bush to hunt for them but usually not easy to catch, making the animal meat very scarce in the market.

There are different spices of grass-cutters, but the popular ones are the thryonomis agregorianus (brown race) and the thryonomis swinderianus (black race)

You'll need a decision as to which one to venture into: whether snail or grasscutter. That's all.

^^ When Ebola came some people made comments like me, some people reacted to it just like you. The rest is history. I just tried as much as I can to give a warning and I left it open ended by asking that folks do research and know the true position. Little did I know I was committing a crime. No wahala. I know my country and I know how they respond late to warnings in Nigeria. I just learnt that part of the reason for destroying giant African snails is that they carry parasites and can cause meningitis. If you advice a young Nigerian to take a loan or use his savings to start a snail business and just a week or month later there is a "Red Alert" from Federal ministry of health asking that snails farms should be destroyed? I am only just beign concerned.

Ladies and Gentlemen it's a recent finding that snails carry parasites and can cause meningitis. The US and Australia are destroying them and have asked folks not to consume them. I will suggest that any potential investors look into this new development. It's a notorious fact but one we must live with at least for now. Nigeria like most African countries may not do further studies before doing "copy cat" and ban anything America bans.

Snail farming can be very profitable in Nigeria.

Yet, it is one of the most neglected animal rearing business.

What is Snail: Land snails belongs to the class of Molluscan, Gastropod. The one popularly known as ‘Congo Meat‘ in many parts of Africa. Nigeria – Eju, Igbin, etc…

There are so many species of snails but the types we are looking at here are the ones that are suitable for commercial Snail Farming in Africa.

1. Achatina Fulica – The East African land snail, or giant African land snail, scientific name Achatina fulica, is a species of large, air-breathing land snail, a terrestrial pulmonate gastropod mollusk in the family Achatinidae. It is the smallest in size among all the desirable species for rearing in Africa.

Achatina fulica has a narrow, conical shell, which is twice as long as it is wide and contains 7 to 9 whorls when fully grown. The shell is generally reddish-brown in colour with weak yellowish vertical markings but colouration varies with environmental conditions and diet. A light coffee colour is common.

Adults of the species may exceed 20cm in shell length but generally average about 5 to 10cm. The average weight of the snail is approximately 32 grams (Cooling 2005).

2. Achatina Achatina – Achatina achatina, common name the giant Ghana snail, also known as the giant tiger land snail, is a species of very large, air-breathing land snail, a terrestrial pulmonate gastropod mollusk in the family.

Achatinidae. Giant African land snails are hemraphrodites, meaining they possess both the female and male reproductive organs. Two snails are still needed for breeding, but they are very prolific breeders.

Similar to the other species in the genus, Achatina achatina’s shell can attain a length of 200 mm and a maximum diameter of 100 mm. They may possess between 7-8 whorls and the shell is often broadly ovate. The body of the animal is silver-brown in color although albino morphs may exist.

Please swerve to the right undecided undecided how many people have died from eating snails in Nigeria?? Tell me undecided

The giant African land snail may fit in the palm of your hand, but it is posing a big threat to Florida residents.

State officials are worried because the snails carry disease and eat most of the agricultural crops grown in the state, an official said.

When the Florida Department of Agriculture first discovered the current outbreak in Miami-Dade County, they found "massive amounts of these snails at every property we visited," said Mark Fagan, a spokesman.

Barely more than 18 months later, Fagan estimated officials have captured more than 120,000 snails. The largest had a 6.1 inch shell.

"We have a staff of 50 that's dedicated to nothing but snail hunting," Fagan said.

Giant African land snails carry rat lungworm, which the Centers for Disease Control said is the most common cause of human eosinophilic meningitis. The snails often contract the worms by eating rat feces.

Florida's food supply is threatened too, said Fagan.

"They eat 500 different plants," he said.

Florida has more than 9 million acres of farmland. The Florida agriculture industry employs 750,000 people and contributes more than $100 billion to the state's economy.

At least 20 neighborhoods are battling the snails.

According to Fagan, the snails can produce 100 eggs per month and live more than 8 years.

"It's a perfect environment for them here in South Florida," state entomologist Dr. Ian Stocks told ABC News station WPLG.

Fagan said the giant African land snails first came to South Florida in the 1940s as overseas military equipment returned home. Even today, he added, "they're hitchhiking on cargo."

That could mean they're coming in on something as small as a potted plant.

"When they're really small, they're easily undetected," Fagan said.

People usually spot giant African land snails in their backyards and on the sides of homes. In addition to leaves, the snails also eat stucco and concrete searching for calcium.

"Last week, when it rained, I came out and I saw so many that I took a plastic bag and I had more than 40 of them," Reinaldo Rodriguez, a local resident, told WPLG in an April 2012 interview.

It can be difficult to tell the giant African land snail apart for other kinds of snails. It gets easier as they grow larger.

"The stripes on their shell are a dark, caramel brown, with vertical rather than horizontal stripes," Fagan said. "They have a definite spiral."

According to WPLG, workers returned several times to leave bait and collect the snails.

Agriculture officials are treating snail outbreaks with the same compounds found at home and garden supply stores.

If you spot one in your backyard, Fagan said, don't smash or otherwise destroy it. Rather, he recommended calling an agricultural official to dispose of them. He added that officials are making headway in their battle against the giant African land snail.

3. Archachatina Marginata – Archachatina marginata, common name the giant West African snail, is a species of air-breathing tropical land snail, a terrestrial pulmonate gastropod mollusk in the family Achatinidae.

They can grow up to 20cm long, and live up to 10 years.

Among these three species, Achatina Achatina is the most desirable for farmers because it grows so big to become the biggest snail species in the world. Achatina Achaina has it’s origin from Nigeria, get to Liberia from Nigeria and then Ghana.

Another reason is due to it’s high yield capacity. The other species are very good too but I will focus on Achatina Achatina and Archachatina Marginata in this post because, they are easy to find in Nigeria.

I think snail farming is more profitable only that you begin to get ur money back after a year. One thing about them is that they reproduce 20 times compared to grasscutters. You Can just build a pen house for them, plant crops that they love, water the garden during the dry season and just chilax and wait for money to start pouring in.
Re: Snail Farming Vs Grasscutter: Which One Is More Profitable? by world1(m): 10:28pm On Aug 25, 2015
Achatina-Achatina is very good for commercialization as well, because of its profitability.

This is because of the volume of eggs it lays at once. Each achatina lays 300 to 500 eggs at a time in clutches, three times a year.

Therefore, if you start a farm with about 1000 snails, in one year you would be getting about 1million snails going by the number of eggs they produces.
Re: Snail Farming Vs Grasscutter: Which One Is More Profitable? by world1(m): 10:34pm On Aug 25, 2015
Let’s talk about the steps to take in setting up your snail farm in a small scale level and starts rearing your snail towards harvest.

1. Snail Farming Environment – Snails are easily dehydrated, and wind increase the rate of moisture loose in snail which in turn, leads to the dryness of the animal.

To prevent snails from losing water so quickly, your snaileries (the snail house) must be located in environment that is protected from wind.

A low plain, downhill site surrounded with enough trees is perfect for snail farming. You may plant plantains and bananas around your snail farm to prevent the impact of wind.
