Not good for our farming sector.
But from the little I understand about large retailers, they can often fine a supplier if they fail to meet demand or fall behind the quantity required.

May have branched out to others to get a regular supply of the fruits. I don't however, believe it may be the reason. May instead be related to convenience or other issues.

Government should force every retailer to market 'Nigerian made produce' where possible. That'll be a good start.

More like not good for our Government policies. If they come in, we should have some preconditions. Our government focuses on the fan fare but the economic benefits are not considered. I already heard about this issue sometime back. Shoprite does this deliberately. It has nothing to do with local scarcity. It is a deliberate effort to patronize SA farmers. Surprised Ghana even has more influence. Take your banana to Shoprite and see what they tell you.

Ministry of Trade & industry, please wake up. This is the noise government has been making and why we don't have jobs. We keep creating jobs for other countries.

Blah blah blah, everyone complaining. An opportunity exists when a problem arises. The question is what can be done to mitigate or curb this. From my little experience exporting agricultural products, the most money is made in post harvest., logistics, storage and marketing.

I was shocked to see this myself at the ikeja store when last I was in naija, I managed to talk to one of the purchasing guys at an event a few days later (mainly by coincidence) and he said the problem was shoprite did not have time to go seek out suppliers in naija they expect nigerian suppliers to send in proposals. He also said that when they gave contracts to nigerian firms to supply - after a few supplies they became inconsistent, not meeting up demand etc. He said they rather source from Ghana and S. Africa where they are sure of consistent supply. Most of these applies to fruits and vegetables.

So maybe some folks here can form a co-op approach shoprite, source bulk from up north and supply them. If you can figure out the storage and preservation aspect..you don strike gold. Start with a few stores and as you increase capacity expand, before you know am you will become a brand name.

My two cents.

I KNOW AS A FARMER, NIGERIA DON'T VALUE OUR OWN PRODUCT BUT RATHER IMPORT COUNTERFITED GOODS.

THAT'S WHY STOPRITE AND THERE LIKES ARE MAKING BILLIONS ON OUR HEAD AND THE MUMU US WILL BE SAYING "THANK YOU FOR BRINGING SHOPRITE TO THIS STATE" undecided

THIS IS A FVCKING SHAME! I RATHER GO TO LOCAL MARKET STORE OR SHOP TO BUY MY STUFF THAN FOR ME TO STEP MY LEG ON SHOPRITE PUSHING CART LIKE IF I'M DOING MYSELF ANY GOOD.

ordinary retailing is being taken over by foreigners and we applaud them, yet complain about lack of jobs and ridicule the "2 by 2" shop owners, just imagine?

Branding is the key here. Look at the product stickers on the items. can we find such here yet? Apart from local market women/men do we have companies dealing on plantains and watermelons? This is a gap to be filled.

Recently i was in Gombe state and Bauchi too. I saw loads of water melons displayed on road sides for sale. The products are there in large quantities. Why can't we have supply chains that can make these available to outlets like shoprite and the like?

Having said that, i emplore Shoprite to to try to establish programmes/partnerships that will make these locally produced goods available to them. Importation does not help our economy

There are scarcity of these commodities in the most parts of the country the crops are planted because fulani herdsmen are hacking farmers to death. So most farmers are scare to go and harvest their crops. It's rather unfortunate that this govt of buhari look the other way while his cattle rearers are gaining more ground in killing innocent citizens.

So you haven't seen water melons in SW,SS and SE markets

They don't have supply chains in the north because most of them lack education and are not enlightened..
