I don't blame them, it's the govt/custom authorities that should be blamed for allowing the import of these fruits in the first place. Come and see enough water melon in Gombe state that even gets rotten due to lack of buyers.

Nigerians are big foools, why allow foreign company to open a retail outlet in nigeria.

We cannot produce enough for the ever increasing population.
What do you expect, when everyone of us wants white collar jobs?
This is just the beginning.
We better invest into agriculture.
I pray we don't start importing GARRI and AMALA.

Blah blah blah, everyone complaining. An opportunity exists when a problem arises. The question is what can be done to mitigate or curb this. From my little experience exporting agricultural products, the most money is made in post harvest., logistics, storage and marketing.

I was shocked to see this myself at the ikeja store when last I was in naija, I managed to talk to one of the purchasing guys at an event a few days later (mainly by coincidence) and he said the problem was shoprite did not have time to go seek out suppliers in naija they expect nigerian suppliers to send in proposals. He also said that when they gave contracts to nigerian firms to supply - after a few supplies they became inconsistent, not meeting up demand etc. He said they rather source from Ghana and S. Africa where they are sure of consistent supply. Most of these applies to fruits and vegetables.

So maybe some folks here can form a co-op approach shoprite, source bulk from up north and supply them. If you can figure out the storage and preservation aspect..you don strike gold. Start with a few stores and as you increase capacity expand, before you know am you will become a brand name.

My two cents.

You have spoken well. Organisation, consistency, good business ethics will pay of. Its a pity even Ghana can get their act together but in Naija it seems like its everyman for himself. In this sort of instance, one needs corporation and the body of fruit sellers need to come together and organize themselves abi na from one farm person dey source all these food items? It will not work like that. Well i'm not too shocked at Ghana because i know they have been supplying foreign stores abroad (UK and co) and those guys even have higher standards. No kidding.

Most organisations lack that here in Nigeria. Think of a million times someone has told you come today and they have failed. Think of even the small welder, tailor, market woman and co that has told you that a million times here. It seems like it is ingrained in our culture. Thats it for you. One must be ready for business with these guys. Thats how it works. I beg you oga, i use God beg you will not work. I feel your statement up there! You really hit the nail in the coffin!

You're one of the sensible ones here. The past administration and those before it are to blame for this kind of nonsense. I hope this administration would put an end to such practices. Why should Shoprite import watermelon, bananas etc. from South Africa when we have more than enough of such fruits in Nigeria. Hell, we even have better and fresher ones! They're indirectly bettering their economy at the detriment of ours. Try this kind of nonsense in China and the government won't hesitate to shut down you down. Nonsense!

do you knw d negative effect of food preservative? making their own money while killing us

Food preservatives are not necessarily poisonous. Or at least, not all are.

I guess we should stop taking apple which are not grown locally.

And this is even Ghana, not US, not China. You can harvest a crop in Ghana today and have it in Nigeria today, holding logistics constant.

Accra to Ibadan is actually closer than Jos or Makurdi (food capital of Nigeria) to Ibadan. So if you need preservatives to prevent spoilage of a produce from Ghana, you need it more to transport locally from some parts of Nigeria.

So what's the difference? The only argument is economic. Hardly any argument on health ground.

I guess it's a matter of local farmers not packaging their produce. Companies like Shoprite would require the produce be put in standard size/weight boxes....which the farmers wouldn't be willing to do. After all.....Shoprite is not going to import if we are not going to buy....so we the foreign minded people who buy the imported bananas and watermelons are the ones who are hurting the farmers.

These big shopping malls have always been a conduit for products from their country to be exported into countries they are located. They see the bigger picture unlike our leaders that are short sighted.

Not good for our farming sector.
But from the little I understand about large retailers, they can often fine a supplier if they fail to meet demand or fall behind the quantity required.

May have branched out to others to get a regular supply of the fruits. I don't however, believe it may be the reason. May instead be related to convenience or other issues.

Government should force every retailer to market 'Nigerian made produce' where possible. That'll be a good start.

To be honest with u, it is far 4rm d above. it is just 2 encourage their economic development like Juluis Berger will often use German trucks/cars or Daewoo using Korean trucks/cars etc.

YOU LEFT OUT ORANGES. I WAS AMAZED TO SEE IMPORTED ORANGES IN SHOPRITE!

SOUTH AFRICANS INDEED WERE LAUGHTING AT US WHEN WE STARTED THAT FRAUDULENT BOAST THAT 'NIGERIA HAD OVERTAKEN' SOUTH AFRICA'S ECONOMY.

NOW I ASK, IS IT POSSIBLE FOR NIGERIA'S ORANGE OR WATER MELON TO SELL IN SOUTH AFRICA?

IF THE ANSWER IS YES, THEN WE DONT NEED TO WORRY AT ALL. IF THE ANSWER IS NO, THEN SOMETHING IS GROSSLY WRONG WITH US.

Believe me, many nigerian wealthy are stupid and gullible. If nigerians fail to buy those fruits and opt for local fruits they would be sourced locally. Fruit business for retail stores is a huge business. Are our business men and farmers tapping into these opportunities yet? If u dont believe in urself, dont expect others to believe in you.

Importing agricultural products and produce we have in abundance locally? What kind of funny country is this? This means we are getting things wrong and government of the day won't care!

This action has revealed deficiency of government on major issues. If care is not taken we shall be importing vegetables that thrive all over places in the country.

Has the ministry of agriculture, natural resources and rural development failed? Questions for PMB
