See the fruits I saw at shoprite today in Ibadan. Dey swear for us? While water melon and bananas rot away in many farms in Nigeria... So sad.

For all the zombies shouting that Buhari has been doing well without having cabinet ministers, and so it does not matter.
This is where it matters that you have a minister in charge of finance, trade and Investments because this sort of situation requires a strong fiscal policy that will shift this trade in favour of our local farmers.

That aside, I remember that in one of the sessions at Ogun state economic forum last year, Agro-products financing, packaging and export was discussed with a former president of Mexico, Vincent Fox, former PDP chairman, Audu Ogbe, Ndidi Nwuneli, and the Songhai farms CEO were the panelists.
One of the key things I learned there is that most of our Agro-products doesn't meet the International standard due to issues bordering on proper storage, packaging, and timely delivery. If Akinwumi's work didn't take cognizance of these critical issues, he may have just succeeded as Agric minister by just proliferating subsistence farmers that has no capacity to compete in the international business.

Shoprite is a for-profit business and as such will go to any length and breadth of the world to source for products that will help them maximize profit unless you have a way to restrict them

Chill bro.
I am not even talking about food preservation here, so forget your cancer-related issues.
Do you know that with top notch logistics in place, you can harvest fresh fruits in Nigeria today, and have them in London grocery shops, first thing in the morning tomorrow.
Let's face the real deal, Large scale Agric business is beyond market women operations, you don't expect Shoprite manager to carry basket and enter Ekiti or Oyo village looking for bananas to buy. Somebody has to get these things from the local producers, package and label them as necessary, then transport them in a refrigerated truck straight to the shops within specified hours, and be willing to do that consistently!
These things takes proper capacity, not by subsistence farming.
Personally, Apart from kiwis, pomegranates, apples and plums which we don't grow locally, I will never buy bananas or water melon in a shop when I have them in abundance from local producers on the streets.

What is "top notch logistics" or are you trying too hard to sound educated

Only chemicals and other scientific crap can make fruits grow quickly and those fruits don't have the same nutrients as those that grow naturally..

Food preservation has nothing to do with cancer so what lies are you saying in a bid to sound knowledgeable..

If you don't know anything just keep quiet rather than trying to be an I TOO KNOW person...

True.

Foods from Nigeria disqualified for entry into Uk for various quality reasons are almost certainly of better nutritional value and taste than those produced in the UK and imported from Europe and America. Fruits and vegetable in Europe all look aesthetically pleasing but are often irradiated to within an inch of their natural value. It is so bad that when the average Westerner is faced with produce, say from Nigeria that has rich sent and flavor, they think something is wrong.

There is also much politics in the international trade in agriculture. A favored nations inferior product may sometimes be given precedent over another nations superior product. Nations sign international agreement to open markets to imports then quietly subsides their farmers. Western nations form unspoken cartels that through the power of their economies force many third-world nations to, for instance, produce the same produce, which then compete against one another forcing the price downwards.

In this light, Shopright could be playing a political game. Some here have posited 'why would Shoprite inconvenience itself and hurt its profit margins by importing fruits from relatively far Ghana and far south Africa if these produce could be sourced more profitably local ?' The flaw in this way of viewing things lies in not realizing that there has been a substantial shift in sociopolitical realities since the turn of the century. People may have lost sight of the buzzword, "Ethical Capitalism" which could be said to exemplify the mass civil movement in America following the economic crash, but the refrain still floats around just under the radar.

Ethical Capitalism is probably far from the thinking of Shoprite shareholders but an element of it could be relevant. What i mean is the concept of living with 100 percent profit versus allowing capitalism to lead you to the natural conclusion of pursuing limitless profit at the expedience of moral, social or political considerations. Therefor Shopright could sacrifice some profit by sourcing abroad if the benefits are between 110 percent profit (sourcing locally in Nigeria) and 90 percent profit (sourcing from Ghana and South Africa). Shoprite still makes a hefty and decent 90 percent profit, the 20 percent lose is offset by the political gain whatever that may be.

But,yeah, like someone else mentioned, Nigerians are not moaners, especially were business and making money is concerned, we act. People should complain and protest but more importantly view this as a business opportunity either in supplying or setting up rival indigenous malls and shopping empires.

Nigerian Farmers don't know anything about Standards .

they use Carbide for ripening the banana.
Use Formalin for Kpomo processing.
Use detergents to soften Oranges.
use formalin to preserve chicken and turkeys meat.

Have you even tasted Papaya from an aboki...the bull tastes like shit.

this is what is killing Nigerians...

Our farmers dont use modern practices ....very funny asking and aboki to use these practices...you stand a better chance of getting a fowl to lay a boiled egg

And you seriously want the international community to patronize you?

Re: Shoprite Ibadan Imports Banana And Watermelon From Ghana And SA by bigben431: 8:18pm On Sep 03, 2015
Agree with you...people should form cooperatives put resources together and aggregate these products from small holder farmers. Farmers are willing to plant certain produce if they are guaranteed they will be bought. Entrepreneurs need to come in and work on logistics, preservation and branding.

You can grow almost all fruits up north, We had a pomegranate and apple tree in our backyard, we never really took care of it but it would always bear fruit year after year

You have spoken well. Organisation, consistency, good business ethics will pay of. Its a pity even Ghana can get their act together but in Naija it seems like its everyman for himself. In this sort of instance, one needs corporation and the body of fruit sellers need to come together and organize themselves abi na from one farm person dey source all these food items? It will not work like that. Well i'm not too shocked at Ghana because i know they have been supplying foreign stores abroad (UK and co) and those guys even have higher standards. No kidding.

Most organisations lack that here in Nigeria. Think of a million times someone has told you come today and they have failed. Think of even the small welder, tailor, market woman and co that has told you that a million times here. It seems like it is ingrained in our culture. Thats it for you. One must be ready for business with these guys. Thats how it works. I beg you oga, i use God beg you will not work. I feel your statement up there! You really hit the nail in the coffin!

Very True.

When you go to shops in the stores that sell African stuffs in the UK, how many Nigerian stuffs do you see there.

The plantains and yams there are all seems to come from the carribeans countries, and these do not even compare to quality we have here

if you give the so-called Nigerian business man a contract, he would want you to give him the funds to run around to do the business, he would later on complain that he cannot deliver because of one issue or the other, but he'll forget that the reason you are paying him such high mark-up is that you needed someone to sort out that problem for you.
