Jaja was NEVER the founder of Opobo. He was an Igboman that led Breakaway Bonny Chiefs to form an Opobo Kingdom with the same inhabitants of the Opobo land who are 100% Ijaws. Jaja was though a beneficiary but was never 'founder'. As for Kalabari Kingdom, what are you saying? Who is Ediabali from Abia state? Oga Kalabari is 100% Ijaw and founded by Ijaw-man. Not some Ediabali from Abia state. Make we no argue abeg... Today is my birthday though

Bros I was able to interact with people from Opobo while serving there. They all agree that he was their founder but still point clearly that they are not igbos

Oh. Some of these clans can either speak light Ijaw (*not central Ijaw since there is almost none) and a few words can be picked by an Ijaw of another clan or they can speak their real deep Ijaw (Kalabari, Nkoro, etc) and another Ijaw will virtually hear NOTHING! That is why I said "when it wants to be".

I'm proudly IJAW.
But I want to clear something about my Clan (Tungbo, sagbama lga)
We are not of Kala okun as u put it and do not share any similarities, but rather from Otuokpoti(Ogbia) which is our ancestral place that's why we speak a very distinct dialect, though closer to Kumbo.
I'm working on writing the history about Tungbo-ibe.

Possibly. Like someone said before, Ijaw population is exaggerated. I hope the next census can correct some of these population issues we have in Nigeria.
My bro, many of all dese populatn claims by various ethnic groups ar just false propaganda to gain politcal advntages. I wonder how Ijaws who live in sparsely populated, isolated nd spatially dispersed riverside settlemnts will b even up to six million not to talk of 15 million mentioned here. Even d populatn size of d whole of Bayelsa which is an exclusiv Ijaw state is less dan two million pipo accordin to d 2006 census. Or is it d Ijaws in d remainin Niger-Delta states( Delta, Rivers, Akwa-Ibom, Edo, Ondo) where they ar monorities to others dat really give such a radiculous figure? It is just funny though.

And you really believe that Urhobo-Isoko and Edo are more than Ijaws cheesy?
Even though I am an Urhobo, I know Ijaws are far more than us even when combined with Isoko.
In any case, the 2016 National Population Census will answer these questions for us. I do know that Ijaws are large and we cannot judge ONLY from their Bayelsa population! We have to holistically look at it from their combined population in Edo, Ondo, Delta, Akwa-Ibom, Rivers and Bayelsa states.
Did u 4get dat d Ijaws ar minorities in all those states u mentioned( i.e. Delta, Edo, Ondo, Rivers nd Akwa-Ibom)? D only state in Nigeria where Ijaws ar majority is Bayelsa. Nd even den, Bayelsa's populatn is very small; voters turn out durin d just concluded general electns (2015) was about 500000.

Exclude the Bonnys and Opobos from your Ibani list please. In as much as you love to claim them as Ijaws when they speak not a single word of Ijaw, at least be objective enough to admit the truth. Bonny, Opobo and parts of Okirika all speak Igbo as native language, practise Igbo customs and traditions just like others in the SE, Anioma etc. The first Igbo bible was written in Bonny Igbos. When the Christian missionaries first landed at Eastern Nigeria at Bonny, they used Bonny Igbo speakers as translators as they journeyed into the Igbo hinterland. Do not misrepresent facts.

Bonny is not Ibani? They are Eboe? What an idiotic claim.

Where does the name "BONNY" come from?

What does Bonny mean in EBoe language

Name one prominent Eboe Family from Bonny

So Kenneth Minimah the last Chief of Army Staff from Opobo was Eboe?

Don't be unnecessarily silly. I never said they were Igbo. Quote me anywhere. I said they speak Igbo. Speaking a language and claiming an identity based on that language are 2 different things. The people can choose to call themselves whatever they care to call themselves but it would be objective enough to admit that they speak Igbo language as native language. Nairaland is fast becoming a place where lies are bred up to the extent that one can hardly take for sure the authenticity of what they read on here.
Re: Ijaw Dialects And Where They Are Spoken by bigfrancis21: 5:53am On Nov 04, 2015
Bonny is said to be derived from 'Ubani', corrupted to Bonny by the English speakers when they arrived. Coincidentally, 'ubani' is a common Igbo name and word which means 'wealth of the land' or 'wealth of the earth goddess' whichever way you want to see it.

Whatever you make of my post is at your discretion.

DNA wise, the people of Bonny and Opobo would be greater Igbo by blood than Ijaw, having heavily descended from numerous ex-Igbo slaves destined for the Americas during the slave trade who could not make it because the slave trade had been abolished, thus they settled in those areas. Majority of the people of these 2 areas are only 'ibani' by name and bear Ibani names like 'Fiberesima' which they barely know the meaning of. The only language they knoww how to speak is Igbo. The surrounding towns of Finima and Abalama to Bonny may still speak Ibani but Bonny town proper, Opobo and parts of Okirika all speak Igbo as a native language.

A DNA test will easily reveal majority of these people to be Igbo by descent ranging from at least 70% to a full 100%.

This is why I love the Europeans. They deal not in hearsay. They go down to the very roots of things. A simple massive DNA test conducted on the citizens of Bonny and Opobo willl put an end to the needless identity debate going on on this forum.

You are basing your fact based on what someone else wrote? Aren't you supposed to be based in Port-Harcourt? I expected you to know better.

Bonny and Opobo do not speak Ijaw or Ibani. Please visit these islands and don't make unnecessary arguments based on hearsay.

The Ibanis proper who still speak Ibani are found in neighbouring Bonny towns such as Finima or Abalama. Please leave unnecessary nairaland arguments and visit these towns and see the truth for yourself.

You are making silly argument comparing the Hausa case with the Igbo case. The Hausa case and Igbo case are not the same things. Ethnic Igbos from the hinterland settled in these areas and maintained their language as first language till today. As settlers, they did not adopt Ibani nor lose their original language because the Ibani language was often held as a secret language not to be taught to the Igbo settlers while Igbo was left to be the language of communication, thus leading to the complete death of Ibani within 2 generations. In the Hausa case, these people are ethnically not Hausa and still speak their native language, but adopted the Hausa language out of their own volition.

Let me re-iterate, this time slowly, if you did not hear me before. The people of Bonny and Opobo speak Igbo as native language. What they choose to call themselves is at their own discretion. Parts of Okirika also speak Igbo as native language, Patience Jonathan a typical example.

I asked him to exclude Bonnys and Opobos from his Ibani list because he included them as Ibani speaking but they do not speak a word of Ibani.

Imiegbam might be an Ibani word spoken by the people of Finima and other towns but sorry the people of Bonny town proper and Opobo do not speak Ibani but Igbo. Sorry if you are having a hard time accepting this fact. I was born and partially raised in Port-Harcourt and have visited there severally. I scoff at your baby attempts to 'deconvince' me of something I know firsthand. Abagworo, a part Rivers man, will readily confirm this for yourself. Dakuku Peterside of APC Rivers state who is from Opobo openly declared himself as an Igbo man. Google is your friend if you care to educate yourself.

Patience Jonathan campaigned for her husband in Igbo all over Igboland during the last 2 elections. If you need evidence visit youtube.

How can Bonny and Opobo be Ibani-speaking yet a failed attempt was made in 2002 to 'Ibanize' them? How can you Ibanize a people if they are already Ibani-speaking? Are you utilizing your thinking faculty at all or are you just obsessed with Igbo issues of who calls himself Igbo or not?

I have no interest in convincing you. But setting the record straight for anyone reading this thread. I have absolutely no concern about what you think or believe.
You have an unfortunate habit of jumping off at a tangent to irrelevancies. You claim they do not speak a word of Ibani in Bonny. An obvious and childish lie. Whether Patience campaigns in French is NOT relevant to the discussion here.Stop talking like an illiterate.
This tendency to overload the discussion with information that has no bearing is a clear sign you have nothing sensible to say.
