Hello fellow Nairalanders,

I need your advice on this issue. I am about to take a very important and life altering decision in my life, but I am kind of confused as to what to do. I am very sure, that we have mature people here, and I would definitely be given best of advice. This issue cuts across my entire life, please matured advice are kindly welcomed.

I am a guy in my early 20s (would be clocking 21 by December). I have a Diploma in Engineering, and I currently work with a company in Southwest Nigeria. I graduated as the best student of my Department, and that was in early 2012. I did my internship in one of the big names in Nigeria.

Ever since 2012 that I finished the first phase of my polytechnic education, I was unable to satisfactorily secure admission into the schools and course of my choice. Nonetheless I vowed never to settle for HND. Although My Dad pushed against my own will to apply for HND and I was admitted but I refused and turned the offer down. For the University admission application, it’s either I was given the course I have no interest in or not admitted at all. I applied through direct entry, UTME and several many others. One of the many trials even journeyed me to meet the Vice Chancellor of a State University in a supposed southwestern state. The Vice Chancellor questioned me, accusing me of probably cheating in CBT because I scored the highest (story for another day).

I kept on trying but, this year I made a resolution to have a taste/peep into another field. Although I have passion for engineering, but I fell in love with Medicine after I saw two American Television series (Grey’s Anatomy and Night Shift, please don’t think of me weird). I humbled myself and did another UTME exam. I did excellently well, and my performance in Post UTME was good, though below my set standard. I was pressed to change from Medicine and Surgery to Nursing when the admission officer told me of my slim chance of being admitted for MBBS (Indigeneship stuffs). Fortunately I was admitted for Nursing.

In my quest not to put my eggs in one basket I obtained another DE form. Using the DE application I picked two schools in southwestern states. But, I didn’t stop there; I applied as an unsolicited candidate to another school in one of the Northern States. Fortunately I was admitted for my long desired course in Engineering Field in the Northern University. Though I am still awaiting the two Southwestern Universities and the Northern University resumes in 3 months; I don’t want to give these all away. I want to make the best decision base on good career advice.

I have so prayed and it seems God is giving me a blank cheque to write on. At this point, I can't afford to make the wrong decision.

The issues I have now are:

1. The school that admitted me for Nursing has opened portal for Acceptance fee payment which closes in a week. Of which the tradition is if I couldn’t pay on or before the said deadline; my admission would be invalid. Of course this calls for professional and tactical deliberation and decision. Of which I am to accept the admission now (school resumes presumably January), I would be forced to quit my full time job, thus I won't be able to safe enough for my expenses of even 2 years in college.

2. I am so in love with the Northern University, I love the environ, the distance and of course the solitary of my personality I would enjoy (considering my personality), but we all know the security issue in the north though it’s not rampant in this particular state.

3. The living expenses in Nursing admitted school is on the high side. Looking at it my entire savings would be out in less than two years. Speaking of which my Dad is of no financial support since I disobeyed and turned him down. So I have myself to think about Feeding, Tution Fee, Hostel Fee, Hand outs, Internet data and Transportation. However, my savings would see me through four years of the Northern University.

4. BNsc is a 5-year course and ELectrical Engineering (DE) is a 4-year course, considering the age factor.

5. I am torn between my fantasy and passion, but I want to make the right and best decision. It’s a pity I would be forced to make decision this early despite the unpreparedness of the rest two schools to release DE admission lists.

I am sorry for the long write up. Please advice me from experience; career-wise and future-wise.

Thank you very much.

Ashtaroth 'Owo

It's obvious your dream is engineering and you have done well in it in your ND. nursing is just a passionate choice. GO for the engineering.
Re: Please Advice; Degree In Nursing Or Degree In Electrical Engineering by naijaninja15: 10:12pm On Nov 18, 2015
Hi there,

I must say it is a surprise that Nigeria University now offer degree in nursing, because during my days it is only in health care institutions set up by either federal or state government were courses such as these get offered. Well to cut the long story short, I am a nurse and I know what you meant when you said that you got inspired to become a nurse by watching on Grey's Anatomy. I have been there and I have also had opportunities to know people with the same aspiration.

I had my first degree in economics in Nigeria University, worked in one of the Banks as a banking officer for about 3 years before having the golden opportunity to relocate to United State. I left Nigeria shore to United States during the financial crises and getting a job was really hard; during this same period a lot of companies were downsizing and a lot of people got laid off. But I observed one thing, and that is people working in medical field were not being affected that much; they have better job security. And for a new young black man with accent, I opted for a job in a medical line also. Like you I had always wanted to read medicine (to be a medical doctor) but couldn't do it this time too because of my age (was close to 40) and already have a family (wife and 2 kids). So I applied into one of the universities and bagged my BSN. Since then I have been a nurse, worked in great places from OR, ICU, PACU to Oncology. I recently bagged my MSN and preparing for my Nurse Practitioner License which is close to being a physician as you have authority to prescribe just like a doctor.

Along the way I have people who have this aspiration due to watching some movies, sitcoms or series like Grey's Anatomy but who have no real passion for nursing. These people worked as nurse for a while and as expected quit. they all give reasons like its not what I expect it to be, I cant stand too much blood, I cant stand sputum, I cant stand shit, I cant stand some of these old people and it goes on and on. To be a nurse you must have a strong passion for helping people, able to stand mess (feces, urine, sputum, vomit). To be a nurse you must have the ability to be ready because its very testing and people get burnt out easily. Have ever thought about being surrounded by sick people all the time. Please don't get me wrong, Im not writing to discourage you, just want you to make a genuine choice.

Nursing in America is rewarding (average about $60,000-$120,000 a yr) so I didn't have problem of which one pays more even thought your specialty determines who get paid better. Bottom line, choose what you see yourself enjoying in future, if it is nursing go for it and if it is engineering go for it. Forget Grey's anatomy...its all lies...get your mind outta gutter...doctors don't fling around like that and nurses don't lay with doctors as they depict it.

Word of advice, NO ROMANCE LIKE THAT IN HOSPITAL SETTING; NURSES AND DOCTORS ARE PROFESSIONALS LIKE EVERY OTHER PROFESSIONERS. If you go become nurse for this reason, na u know ooo

Go for ELECT ELECT.

They earn more compared to Nurses and you won't really find it hard finding a job if you graduate with a 2.1(E no easy sha).

But for Nursing, I won't pay for your tuition if you finish your savings before graduating. So, forgerrit!

@op. first, you will always get mixed advice from nairaland and at the end, you might get more confused.
Secondly, according to your story, u are already in line for a great career in elect elect. You finished as best graduating student in ur ND, you hv some working experience in elect elect, elect elect has been ur passion. And now you got it, you don't need any more confirmation that elect elect is the God's plan for you. And I am sure if you meet your dad now that u hv got admission for the elect elect , he would support u financially.
Nursing was just a diversion to confuse you. You were not even interested in nursing, it was medicine that took ur attention.
In my own opinion, you have good background already for an excellent career in elect elect
Re: Please Advice; Degree In Nursing Or Degree In Electrical Engineering by mukason: 10:32pm On Nov 18, 2015
Go for Electrical Engineering, make at least 2.1. You will appreciate it more than nursing. You are a man. Leave nursing for females. Go and face your real men in Engineering. You may compare medicine n surgery to Electrical Engineering and not nursing to electrical engineering as a man. If you choose nursing, then start making plans to leave Nigeria, its after you have left Nigeria to study Nursing that you may start comparing it to electrical engineering.

Nigerian universities have been offering degree in Nursing for a long time now. My aunt had her first degree in nursing from UI in the early 80s and went on to bag a PhD in same field around 1989 from same institution. She's been lecturing in Nursing and Nursing sciences since then.

Based of your write up clearly shows that your level of literacy without doubt is excellent. I will strong advise you to follow your heart. You pointed out that you have strong passion for engineering, which you studied Engineering in your first phase of polytehnics education. I will STRONG advise you to go for HND programmes, as also advised by your father. You should not seek for admission into university education, because others are all rushing for university degrees. I am going quote from James Altucher book's 40 Alternatives to college.
" Only one problem as you already know, is thatwhen I arrived at the job, after 8years of learning how to program in an academic eviroment-I
couldn't program. I had no clue. I couldn't turn on a computer. It was a mess. I think ruined people lives while trying to do my job." I heard my boss whisper to his boss's boss. I don't know what we're going to do with him, he has no skills". And what is worse is that I was in a cluster of cubicles so everyone around me could hear whisper also." I am list basic skills to have before you complete your tertiary education, if you even can secure an employment at the end of the day.

- Learn how to code aka computer computer programming- choose from any language, preferably python
- Investment massively in areas of Engineering you have passion for; softwares , books, time, energy and other tools valuable tools.
- Dig deep on how to solve people's problems with aquired skills.
- I know you can write, try to improve on it.
- Learn to network.
- Learn to negotiate.
- Learn how to sell.
- Begin to start a bussiness now.
All the above listed are not taught in school
Wishing you the best.
