SaharaReporters has obtained information detailing the significant financial cost of trips undertaken by President Muhammadu Buhari and his entourage. The president’s trips since assuming office at the end of May, 2015 have now stretched to 14.As SaharaReporters reported two days ago, Mr. Buhari’s frequent foreign trips have drawn increasing criticism from politicians and pundits who question the wisdom of the trips at a time when several domestic crises, including a crushing fuel scarcity, incessant attacks by Boko Haram terrorists, and blackouts demand urgent and focused attention.

According to financial information obtained by our investigators, an average two-day long presidential trip costs between $350K and $500K. For instance, during Mr. Buhari’s recent trip to Tehran, the capital of Iran, the estacode for accompanying Presidency officials was $105K. In addition, transportation costs stood at $45K, accommodation 200K, honorarium $10K, contingency 20K, with media coverage costing $10K.

The breakdown for the forthcoming trip to Paris is as follows: the estacode for accompanying Presidency officials is $130K, transportation $55K, accommodation $270K, honorarium $10K, contingency 20K, media coverage $10K. The total cost for the trip is $495K

In the course of our investigation, SaharaReporters found that President Buhari is scheduled to make an immediate trip to South Africa. In fact, the trip is planned to follow immediately from Mr. Buhari’s visit to Paris, France. The cost of the forthcoming South African trip is as follows: Estacode for accompanying Presidency officials $110K, transportation $35K, accommodation 220K, honorarium $10K, contingency 20K, and media coverage $10K, for a total of $405K

A source at the Presidential Air Fleet (PAF) said they have a separate budget for fueling the planes as well as allowances for the presidential air fleet commander, pilots and the air stewards. The Office of the National Security Adviser funds those expenses.

So, the costs uncovered by our investigators cover only personnel from Aso Rock Villa, aides, protocol officers, members of the press, security personnel, a cook, a luggage officer and a steward. The estacode did not reveal what President Buhari receives per night, as that expense is handled separately and secretly. In addition the Minister of Foreign Affairs and five members of his entourage who usually accompany President Buhari are not included in the costs as they get paid from the ministry's budget.

SaharaReporters also discovered that the amounts for honorarium ($10K), contingency ($20K) and media coverage ($10K) are fixed for all trips. The State House Chief of Protocol handles honorarium and contingency while Femi Adesina, a senior assistant on media, handles $10K for “media coverage.”
Critics have come down hard on President Buhari for engaging in international junkets at a time of rising disillusionment, with Nigeria mired in a crippling fuel scarcity, continuing violence by Boko Haram, and an economic downturn that has put pressures on banks and numerous businesses.

Mr. Buhari has only visited four Nigerian states since coming to power. His much-anticipated visit to Lagos three days ago to launch anti-crime helicopter, boats and vehicles did not materialize, but led to a traffic meltdown.
A Facebook posting by SaharaReporters calling President Buhari a “junketer-in-chief” was widely shared and elicited viral response on social media.

Two sources at the Presidency told SaharaReporters that some of Mr. Buhari’s handlers were pressuring him to postpone his trip to South Africa in order to calm public anger.

An average of $245,000 per day minus presidential jet. Hmmm.

And the president has spent about 45 days offshore.

Well, some Mathematics.

$245,000 x 45days + (jet money) = $11 million + jet money

In naira= $11 million x 248 = N2.73 billion + Jet money.

If simple things like Taxi,Accommodation and Feeding would cost 2.73 billion, it would be safe to assume that JET MONEY would cost 3 times that amount. So JET MONEY would be equal to N2.8 Billion x 3= N8.2 Billion.

So Total on Junketing = N2.8 Billion +8.2 Billion= N11 Billion.

Now, 7 things N11 Billion would have done for Nigerians.

1)It would pay 600,000 Nigerian Workers minimum wage at 18,000 for 1 month.

2)It will buy 126 million litres of fuel at 87 Naira per litre. That's enough fuel for 10 days for 1 million cars if they are given 12 litres per day.

3)It would buy 3,500 Tractors at 3 Million Naira per tractor putting almost 100 tractors in every state definitely leading to an Agro revolution.

4)It would build 10,000 solar boreholes for communities across Nigeria at N1.1m each providing clean water for at least 2 million ruralites.

5)It would give a whooping 550 Million Naira in world class upgrades to each of the 20 Federal Teaching hospitals in Nigeria. Hmmm.

6) It would change 2000 Danfo buses in Lagos to Brand new Air Con Hiace Buses at 5.5 million per bus.

7)

And on a lighter note:

N100 Naira recharge card for 110 million Nigerians.
1.1 billion puff puffs at 10 Naira each. That's enough to give 50 puff puffs to 22 million Lagosians.
It will give a hair cut to 73 million Nigerians at N150 per cut. In short, All the males in Nigeria get a free hair cut.
It will buy 146,000 laptops at N75,000 each. 450,000 Tecno Phantoms.
183 million bottles of coke at N60 per bottle. That a coke for every Nigerian & 2 for every Togolese.
1 million 50kg bags of rice at N11,000 per bag.

Thanks for you observation. This government has continued championing naira protection as one of its prime economic policy but has not seen the need to enforce the superiority of naira a means of all business transactions within the country. Moreso for transactions which are wholly representative of Nigeria sovereignty.

Common people are being restricted from doing normal business as low as $1000 but the Presidency is throwing the same dollars in 100s of thousands around - hypocrisy or unawareness?

This is how President Jonathan stocks started falling and he never manage to get his groove back until the people that loved him turned their backs against him.

President Buhari and APC are beginning to appear insensitive and out-of-depth to the immediate pains of anxious Nigerians. They are busy sending out dinner pictures while BH are still deadly and active. They write us 'love letters' on how nameless looters have been returning loots without any proofs. The emerging stage is them forcing us to watch how they are giving out their children out in marriage.

The same junketeering which OBJ engaged in which was widely castigated, but you cant really blame anyone cos it is always very difficult to directly measure the benefits of such trips, especially to non-discerning or hate-filled minds.

I must confess however, even though I truly appreciate the essence and importance of these trips, the waka don dey too much this time. I hear south africa is coming up this week. undecided

Why are the figures in dollars?

Same reason why they are killing businesses by stopping dollar payments for even those with legitimate business but go ahead to approve loans in dollars for APC governors like Oshiomole...So check between both which is more harmful to the economy and you understand the psyche of this buhari and APC...

You need an advanced level of understanding to understand that OBJs first tenure was used to pull Nigeria out of the pit of seclusion; those trips were very important and we still enjoy the direct benefits till date.

Probably the phones you use, including the internet on the phone you are using to reply to this was part of the outcome of those excess foreign trips OBJ made in his early days. Just like I said, it is difficult to directly quantify or point out what you gain directly. Just like the air you breathe, you may not see it, but it's there.

The amenities you listed are not free in any part of the world. But then, even with all your money in your wallet, you wouldn't have been able to get them still if they didnt exist in your environment; if you had N1m in your pocket, you wouldnt be able to still purchase mobile internet if it didnt exist in Nigeria (as was the case just some years ago).

May I also remind you that it was through those numerous foreign junkets which OBJ embarked upon those days, that's how Nigeria was able to secure a debt relief of well over $20billion from the Paris club. It is sometimes surprising to see supposedly educated people asking what the essence of these foreign trips or diplomatic relations are.
