I don't think he pleaded guilty before the magistrate. I think he confessed to the crime in his statement to the Interrogating Officer at the Police.

His refusal to get a lawyer compounded it all. It looks to me he didn't have anything to do in the society and he preferred free food in prison because according to him he had been to prison before.

I really do think u need to learn a lot about how the legal system works. The judge did not prosecute the suspect. He only listened to the evidence presented to him. He did not decide to sentence pass a death sentence on the accused.

you may be right o.Some criminals prefer being in prison.I have been in court when an accused was acquitted of his charges.He guy has spent 7 yrs awaiting trial.He started weeping that he doesn't want to be free because he has no family,job or house to return to.The judge weak that day sha.

A crime that was commited in 2003 is being given a judgement in december 2015, why was this man's judgement delayed uptill today? shouldnt the judiciary take blame for delaying judgement?
the guy choose to defend himself probably because he cant afford a lawyer and dosent trust the government lawyer to aid him out.
he may have confessed out of the truma and phsycological toture expirenced over his long stay in awaiting trial status.
is death by hanging the only option before the biased judge for such a crime? what is the difference between him and others returning billions of naira secretly to PMB?
this to me is an unfair judgement considering the time of the act, time of judgement delivery, the type of judgement given to the man, the amount involved etc
the judge should have taken into consideration of the failure of the judiciary to dispense justice on time, the amount involved vis-a-vis what is happening in our society before giving such crystal clear biased judgement. that guy i believe must be a product of a failled society in which those that plundered the society are being rewarded with No prosecution and even minsterial appointment.
the man cant even appeal going by his economic condition
the death of that man would be one this nation would not forget in a hurry.

IMO, I disagree with you guys saying "for just N14,000?". Remember if any of his victim had N1billion at the moment, he'll rob it. He is an ARMED ROBBER and the fact that he was only able to get N14k+ hasnt excluded the ARMED from the qualification. And any armed robber could take the life of its victim which makes him a killer.

That's what we read is newspaper report. There are many gaps in the report. If we had a good report capturing most of the record of precedings, we could make a better analysis of the case.

However, his confession was not out of trauma from long stay in awaiting trial as you claimed, considering his confessional statement to the police.

Again, 2003 is when he committed the crime, not when he was sent to the court. We haven't all the details. Considering he went to prison before, I am thinking perhaps the first time they helped him and dismissed the case, then when he committed more robberies, the prosecutor decided to nail him finally by consolidating all the files. Just guessing here. May be may be not.

Armed robbery is a capital offense punishable by death. It was created this way because of the crazy rate of armed robberies during the 80s and 90s. This is not q sentimental issue. A person who robs with arms for 14k and one who robs with arms for 10 million get the same punishment. Same as someone who kills someone with a baseball bat or stabs 100 times. All na murder

To add to my previous comment. Yesterday, due to the scarcity of fuel/public transportation, a female friend of mine got her bag snatched because she had to trek from her shop to her house. Even if she said the only costly stuff in her bag is her Tecno M3. I still wished the snatcher was caugth and KILLED!

There's what they call plea bargain that should reduce his sentence to less than 10yrs. He accepted and no murder or rape recorded.
