I did get lots of PMs regarding vertical sack farming and did promise to make out time to explain it in details. Though very busy, l will be making out time to detail what it entails setting up a vertical sack farm enterprise within a space of 30ft by 90ft which is not even up to a plot of land and within this same space one can grow about 10,000 plants and have a harvest worth a minimum of N200,000 on a monthly basis with only one farm hand. More later.

Yes and diseases such as bacteria wilt, nematodes can easily be isolated if one is using the sacks. The picture is tomatoes grown in the sacks.

From my little understanding &knowledge, yes vertical sack farming is like "GreenHouse" farming if managed well & d advatages are enormous as sated by @pavore9. A farmer can eliminate most of the dangers of direct land farming. This s novel idea

Being a health conscious individual and do have a preference for organic food. I will focus on how to set up an organic vertical sack farm, so that whoever gets to consume the produce from the farm will have less to worry about.

Though one can have the set up of the farm in the open air but l do prefer it within a structure, constructed with wood and shade nets. One do not need to go and buy new wood and shade nets as one can buy off those used ones from construction sites. Having it within a shade net covered structure would reduce the intensity of sun within the farm while still enjoying good air flow. Having set up by corner of a fenced plot would save costs on wood and shade net as it only just two sides would need the side covering with shade nets. The structure establishes territory as it is just not every one that can enter the farm as it is said that a room without a door is a freeway.

The concept of vertical sack farming is making farming a possibility irrespective of one's location and space as one who is a tenant in a place like Lagos and as long as he/she has space of 3 square feet within the compound that is enough to set up a big sized vertical sack which one can grow a mix of local curry, coriander, green, spinach, lettuce, spring onions all at the same time and serving the kitchen's need.

The picture is what a vertical sack looks like when it is already filled with a mixture of soil and manure, ready for the planting.

Since vertical sack farming is something new in Nigeria, the sacks are not locally sold. It is brought in from Kenya.

Thank you Mr Pavore for the valuable information. Do you know where we can get the growing bag fabric in Kenya Or ready made growing bag? And how much it cost?
Re: Let Us Go Vertical And Earn Some Income. by Pavore9: 7:49am On Dec 05, 2015
For a sack the size l have in my previous post. 5 wheel barrows of soil and 5 wheel barrows of manure is required. One can use manure from poultry, cow dung but from practical experience manure from goats seem to be the best so far because using goat manure in the mix, a sack can continue to grow crops for up to one year before loosening up the sack for a new mix. Manure from poultry and cow dung seems to have a shorter span of effectivity as fertilizer for the crops which means sacks which they are used on will not go up to a year before a new mix.

Note that the livestock waste must be left for 3 months to decompost before it can be used as manure for the sack. Since not everyone has access to livestock waste the easier method is vermiculture where one generates vermicompost from raising earthworms within his/her compound.I will shed more light on this in my next post as l have a farm visit to conduct.

Finally home, been away on farm tours & couldn't update this thread because my laptop where my pictures are stored stayed behind. Visited organic farms into strawberry, herbs & spices, that is where the money is as a kilo of chia seeds sells for N8,000!

You can Google the images of it and its health benefits. I met it at the farm alongside Spring onions, Fennel, Peppermint, Turmeric, Rosemary, Thyme, Oregano, Garlic Chives, Coriander, Parsley, bay leaf, Gooseberry and many others.

Thus the reason for the high market value, It only takes 3 months to plant and harvest and one funny thing is that the size and look of the plant is just like the plant of our local curry. The farm owner said they are looking forward to harvesting 50kg of it, you do the mathematics!

One plants directly, a seed in a hole and since the seeds are tiny it is advisable to just make a bed mixed with manure and have the seeds broadcasted and once the plants are up, you can easily transplant to space them. When grown within a space of 3ft by 9ft, the expected harvest yield is around 1.5kg.
