AFTER THE 2 COUP SCENARIO THERE WERE TRANSFER OF POWER FROM CIVILIANS TO MILITARY JACKBOOTERS WHO HAD GUNS. ARE YOU SAYING THAT A BROADCAST EITHER BY GUNPOINT OR NOT, LEGITIMIZES OR DELIGITIMIZES A COUP?

SO ORIZU SHOULD HAVE RESISTED EVEN IF IRONSI HAD A GUN ON HIS HEAD BUT SHAGARI IS GIVEN "A PASS" BECAUSE HE WAS KICKED OUT BY BUHARI BUT ORIZU WASN'T?

IGBO PEOPLE UNA HEAR? IF YOU HAVE A GUN ON HEAD, YOU MUST DO THE RIGHT CONSTITUTIONAL THING , BUT IF A FULANI LEADER HAS THE SAME GUN ON HIS HEAD, HE HAS THE RIGHT TO SAVE HIS LIFE FIRST AND FORGET THE CONSTITUTION.
You are not making sense and sounding irrational. The fact is THERE WAS NO GUN POINTING AT NWAFOR Orizu!

Orizu on his own made the broadcast of VOLUNTARY transfer of power to the military(check the meaning of voluntary) instead of doing what is legitimate by swearing in the chosen acting PM. He had his plans perhaps he wanted his kinsman to control the government. This wasn't so in the case of Shagari or others where their ouster was forceful and not voluntary.

Honestly the man didn't take the oath of office but he presided over the country even if it was done illegally, most coups are illegal.

This is from Wikipedia. A president is the leader of a country or a division or part of a country, typically a republic, a democracy, or a dictatorship. The title "president" is sometimes used by extension for leaders of other groups, including corporate entities.
We're talking of Nwafor Orizu and not Aguila Irons. I think you're confusing the two.

Were you there to know if he announced it under duress or not?

When Audu Ogbe the former PDP chairman signed his undated resignation at the instance of OBJ little did the masses knew it was at a gun point. Go and read OBJ's "MY WATCH".

The truth is that a lot has happened in this country unnoticed.

And what if he handed over to Ironsi in duress? Do you think Buhari couldn't have made SHAGARI to hand over power to him on National TV if he wanted?

He had enough time to swear in Dipcharima before the arrival of Ironsi.

If he had only done that, posterity would have judged him right.

He never did and hence, he was an unpatriotic ethnic bigot.

Shagari didn't handover power to Buhari, he was forcefully kicked out. This can't be said of Orizu Nwafor that did a live broadcast to announce surrendering power to the military even when cabinet ministers had elected an interim prime minister.

Tonye, you mitigated the value of your argument with obvious ethnic bias. You'll make sense if you posit that Dr. Orizu as Acting President didn't qualify for full presidential honour. On the other hand, you need to check again; Shagari handed power 'voluntarily'. Same way Dr. Orizu did. Ernest Sonekan voluntarily 'resigned'. I need also to remind you that Justice Dolapo Akinsanya of the Federal High Court ruled that Interim Government was not known to law, thereby nullifying Sonekan's administration. This means that it never existed. That was the basis for Abacha assuming office. Both Abacha and Ironsi alleged that they were taking over power to stabilize the nation.

Orizu should have handed over to the nominated PM who would have ordered a systematic and LAWFUL punishment for the January 1966 coup plotters.
That is what a HONOURABLE lawmaker should do, not so

Could it be that we Nigerians, nay BLACK Africans are neither honourable nor COURAGEOUS
So how do we make PROGRESS and compete with other countries and races if we cannot exercise these attributes?

Oga you are just making your own theories. The fact is that he(Nwafor) Deliberately refused to swear-in Zanna only for the man to make public broadcast of voluntary handover to illegal military. A military officer Must not illegally take power to 'counter a coup'. I don't know where you brought this from? Oga go read your history.

If Orizu Nwafor maintained that his handing over to military led by his kinsman Ironsi was voluntary, then who are you to say otherwise? Nwafor was a traitor to the State! Fact...

South East organised a coup to kill the leaders of other regions eg Tafawa Balewa, Akintola, Ahmadu Bello

The south eastern president of then refused to come back from his medical check up and vacation trip to UK and carribeans weeks before the coup.

The south eastern president of the parliament refused to swear in Dipcharima that was nominated by members of the cabinet to take over govt, after learning of the demise of Balewa.

Instead, the south eastern leader of the parliament chose to hand over to another south easterner, a military man in the nam of Aguiyi Ironsi.

We should honor a man that derailed our nascent democracy of then, by refusing to swear in another civilian prime minister, but rather chose to hand over to a military man from his ethnicity!!!! Wonders shall never end!!!!! These people always think others are as daft as them.

Infact his name should be blotted from the annals of history for his unpatriotic role he played in the history of this country. Just like Arthur Nzeribe and Daniel Kanu.

We can all see through their devilish machinations to hijack power instead of working for it.

In the corporate world and civil service, put a south easterner in charge of any unit, within a year he will flood everywhere with his kinsmen. If there is a change of leadership afterwards and those that were recruited through the back door are sacked, they will be crying their voice hoax about marginalisation and ethnic cleansing which they never saw when they were packing themselves alone into the department of such ministry.

OP, your Orizu was holding forte because the President in person of Zik was still alive somewhere in the carribeans rocking fresh booties while the country was on the edge. There cannot be 2 presidents at the same time.

Bunch of jokers

Very well said!

Ernest Shonekan was an illegal leader and got served through another illegal Abacha government. Ernest Shonekan, Buhari, Gowon, Murtala, Ironsi and IBB's ouster are examples of "Dog chop Dog". They came through illegal means and were kicked out/killed in same way.

This however isn't the argument. The argument is that Oritzu refused to swear in Zanna(which was constitutional) only to handover "voluntarily" to his kinsman Ironsi which was unconstitutional.

If Orizu handed over the power to zana would that have even stopped the coup, even after Aguiyi Ironsi took over nzeogwu still held sway in kaduna. People should spare Orizu, he did what any reasonable person who loved his life would have done, some of the people criticising him here would not even have waited to hand over to the military but would have bolted out to London with the nearest available means.

@OP Orizu Nwafor was NEVER President but acting President when Nnamdi Azikiwe left Nigeria for Euroipe on holiday. Ideally, the Senate President act as ceremonial president while the PM still control the government. Nwafor was NEVER President, Zik was at that period. There cant be two Presidents at the same time. Acting don't count as he was still Senate President. Many Deputy Governors in Nigeria have acted when their bosses wasn't around, it doesn't make them 'Governor'. Even the former Speaker of Adamawa state House acted when Nyako and Deputy were impeached, it doesn't made him a former Governor. When Bush was President, Dick Chiney acted when he went on surgery, it doesn't make Chiney a former President.

Nwafor after the coup was supposed to have sworn in Alhaji Zanna Dipcharima as acting Prime Minister when Balewa was killed(having been nominated by other ministers). Instead, he "handed" power "voluntarily" to his kinsman Gen Ironsi when no such was backed by the constitution. Nwafor's action made him complicit in the coup.

He's not worth celebrating!

An excerpt from your last paragraph " ...handed power to his kinsman voluntarily " Is that right? Have you thought that he was coerced into handing over? Did Shagari hand over to his kinsman Buhari voluntarily? Did Shonekan hand over to Abacha voluntarily? Why is it different in the case of Orizu and Ironsi? Oh they are Igbo and we must assume otherwise. Coming from a shameless yoruba imposter.

Ironsi and Kaduna Nzeogwu/Ifeajuna cause problems in Nigeria.
The only casualty from igbo side was Col. Arthur Unegbe, and it happened as a result of his closeness to Brig. Maimalari (one of the victims of that unfortunate coup) -- he was shot and killed to avoid him raising the alarm after Maimalari's was killed.
If Zik is not around(according to he was informed about the coup),what of Michael Opkara? Dr Orizu Nwafor?
The British have look for a loyalist who will keep Nigeria under their nose.Their errors send us back to slavery.Today they will ever thrust Hause(people we refer as illiterate).
Ironsi need only two bullets to correct the error then,1 for Michael Opkara and the other for Orizu Nwafor.

No. The issue is on full honour accorded past presidents. I agree that Orizu wasn't qualified because he was only Acting while he remained Senate President. I also argue that Sonekan shouldn't have such entitlement since a court of competent jurisdiction annulled the basis for his section. Same way Celestine Omeha and Andy Ubah can't claim being former governors. In the case of IBB, Abacha, Buhari, etc what they did was to suspend the portions of the Constitution that made their action illegal.
