After the sack has been set up, planting is next. Seedlings are preferred as against seeds for the sides, for certain crops like coriander one can have the seeds broadcasted on top of the sack like in Picture 1 and it grows into what you see in Picture 2.

One can grow Ugu seeds on the of the sack. One can be creative to have a mix within one sack, on the top crops like onions, beetroot, cabbage, maize, lettuce, carrot, celery, aubergine (eggplants). There is someone l know who only grows peppermint on the top of her sacks, she knows what she is getting from the sales of it.

Having crops like onions and coriander within the crop plants would serve as a natural insect repellent for your sack farm as we are aiming at growing organically.

The holes on the sides of the sack can easily take of Green, Spinach, shoko etc. These should be grown through their seedlings. One has to make his or her own nursery as seedling centres are not as common as it is here. Here seedlings go as low as N2 for Spinach, just within 3 weeks of planting one begins to harvest the leaves from the stem for it to re-grow. Coriander seeds is about $1 for a 10g sachet and that can be broadcasted on top of the sacks.

There is no straitjacket rule on what should be grown if you like populate your sack with ewedu afterall l am not the one bringing the Amala! cheesy cheesy cheesy

Picture 3. The woman harvesting from sack makes $4 from the sales of vegetable from each of her sack weekly (Vegetables are far cheaper in Kenya in comparison to Nigeria)

bros, keep it up. i will soon follow ur footsteps. i intend to do ugu and and waterleaf within my farm. what about the watering? do one need special arrangement for it. also is there a particular quantity of water to apply on the sack as too much water will affect the palnt.

The big sack is taken care of with a total of 20 litres of water weekly. Watering is about thrice weekly.

Are the sacks supposed to be open on both ends? I noticed there is no closure at the bottom. Is it how it is meant?

Yes, it has no bottom.

So do we create the bottom on our own?

Yes,it is open at both ends. it has no bottom to discourage damages from insects as the sacks can last 10 years when properly managed. If you check the sides of yours, you will see something looking lacy, that is where to loose the bag after a round of planting, so that can you remix your soil for another round of planting and have the sack soaked in detergent, washed and dried. Then ready for another filling.

No you do not need to create any bottom, just fill the sack at the spot you want to grow your stuff. The pictures of the sacks for tomatoes l uploaded where it was grown within a greenhouse had the farmer placing old tarpaulin before filling his sacks on it was to prevent direct contact of the soil in the sacks with the soil on the ground to avoid bacteria wilt and also when he is through with harvesting the tomatoes, he can remove the sacks and have the soil heaped on the tarpaulin where it will be mixed for another round of planting, taking care not to mix the soil on the ground.

Oga @Pavore9, Thanks 4 d good work u are doing here.
From what I hv got from this thread on vertical sack farming, the followings are established facts:

1) Sand & manure composition is 50:50 by measure while ash/lime is abt 10% by measure. So we hv some like 45:45:10 (sand:manure:ash/lime)
Hence, we can infer that for smaller sack, one can use the above composition ratios.

2) D sacks does not have/need bottom.

3) For d BIG sack, 20litres of water is required weekly for wetting. Going by ratios there4, half of d above sack composition will require 10litres & quarter will require 5litres of water/wk.

4) D BIG sack is abt 1m high &1m in diameter. (i.e 1mx1m cylinder)

Different plants have different "rooting" system. Some spread, while some goes down (tap root).

I blv one has to identify the plant with "tap root" system to plant on top of the sack.

From my little knowledge, most vegetables have shallow or delta root system. Hence, suitable for the sides of the sack.

So, for maximum benefit (& in my opinion), the top of the BIG sack is best suitable for high valued tap rooted vegetable. This is what we must find out.

Also, for mono cropping, a smaller sack (like the pix of tomatoes shown) is ok.

Now, my questions are:
1) What is d best method to sterilise d soil prior to mixing & sacking?
2) Since we are promoting organic sack farming, what is the best (liquid) organic fertilizer if one doesn't get/have enough manure in the 1st instance?
3) can one continue to use the same soil over & over? If yes, What is/are the treatment that must be done to refresh the soil?

Pavore, I have been following you closely for sometime now. Believe me, you have made me change my mind towards allowing my brother study agric/zoology as his desired course.
However, I cannot imagine him studying in Nigeria. As I have seen enough agric graduates that cannot practice commercially. Please do you have any idea where and what in particular he might study in Africa that can make his dream into reality? Keep in mind he will be 16 years and he's only enthusiastic about nature generally( no experience ).

Thank you for inspiring me start my own mini farm, when it materialises I'll share pictures and progress.

Oga pavore9 thanks for creating this thread. We need to know that we don't always require large space or land to farm...hope this pictures will inspire someone. Tomatoes and other vegies grown by a friend in half cut water containers, grow bags and buckets.

local sack won't work... Not tough enough, besides the weaving will easily give way when you create holes to plant your crops.

Impressive! Glad that people are motivated to start out something with what is available. Innovation takes us further just as knowledge makes us see things differently. The capacity of the human mind is infinite why waste it by limiting it.

Most who studied Agriculture related courses did it as a last resort rather than staying at home waiting for another admission, just as most Faculties of Agriculture do not train their students to see and feel the possibilities in Agriculture thus why many look forward to working in offices upon graduation.

With what l know now, l wish l studied horticulture.

I will encourage your brother to do his first degree at home for his foundation after which he can travel out and do a year practical training in whichever aspect he is interested in, which could be diary farming, horticulture for both local and international market, breeding pedigree livestocks etc.

Looking forward to when you will be setting up your farm.

well i can see your brother really has passion for agriculture and that will make the difference most agriculture graduates are looking for office job because they dont have passion they just studied agriculture inorder not to stay at home just like oga pasvore said try asking him if he would like working in a office after graduating he will tell you he wants to own a farm if he truly has passion for agriculture.you can help him fulfill his dreams by helping in being practical when he is in the university and oga pavore has given the advice do that also.i wish him alll the best in life

Recently visited a lady who is growing vertically in a neighbourhood here in Nairobi, she grows only Jew mallow (Ewedu) which is in high demand for those who prepare it by adding fresh milk to the cooking! cheesy cheesy cheesy Got a free bunch of it and it ended up along side a spicy stew and wheatmeal! cheesy

I love organicfoods and many others' zeal in being creative. Just some sacks within the compound that takes care of your ugu/ewedu/green need is something beautiful to behold!

Wishing everyone a Merry Christmas in advance! cool

Your goods do not need to take up to 60 days to get to Nigeria...I have freights agents that sends my goods down to me in 1 week....All you need to do is give the supplier the address details of your courier agent there in China, and then they send it to Nigeria...The freight couriers charges differ by number of days you want your goods to arrive Nigeria...there is fast and slow shipping. Fast shipping takes just a day to get here while slow takes 3-7 days. You will need to inform and give full details to these agents before ordering...Keeping in touch is also necessary...I will drop contacts of my freight agents when I reach for my other phone. This information is what most importation expert teach for money...
Pls sir how do i get information on the importation process. Thanks
