If you can't put Maldini on that list cos he was too much of a CB then Breitner should be off to cos he was too much of a midfielder .
I am sure nobody on NL watched Breitner play LB live because he had switched to the midfield by the 80s.
Of all those I watched live I would place Maldini 1st ,then Brehme. Alaba would be in the next level with Cole ,Lizarazu e.t.c but will likely pass them soon injury permitting .
Maldini,Brehme and Breitner are ahead of Alaba. Krol,Santos and Faccheti are ahead of him.

Of those I saw live Maldini is no 1. Maldini while playing LB was no 2 in the 1995 FIFA WORLD PLAYER OF THE YEAR AWARDS....Brehme never got that high and the serie A award he (Brehme) won was also won by Ruud Krol towards the end of his career lol

Alaba kinda reminds me of the younger Alves. Although they play at opposite sides (LB/RB, LM/RM, LF/RF), but their game in terms of how they attack and defend is outta this world. Still I will have to admit that Alaba is more solid defensively.

Maldini would be the best defensive player of all time because he played Right back, left back and Central defence well

If you are naming top Central defenders, you would also name Maldini.
