Payments of salaries and wages as well as payments and deposits for self-to-self transactions whether inter or intra bank are exempted from the N50 stamp duty policy, the Central Bank (CBN) has said.

Malam Ibrahim Mu’azu, CBN Director, Corporate Communications, made the clarification on Thursday in Abuja in a statement issued to newsmen.

NAN recalls that the CBN recently introduced the policy which was contained in the Stamp Duty Act, 2004 and the Federal Government of Nigeria’s Financial Regulation of 2009.

The policy is part measures to boost tax revenue for the federal government.

The statement said that charge was on all receipts issued by banks or financial institutions in acknowledgment of services rendered in respect of teller deposits and electronic transfers for a value of N1,000 and above.

“The implementation of the Stamp Duty at this point in time emanated from a Federal High Court order that the CBN should direct deposit money banks under its supervision to commence the collection of the duty on behalf of the federal government.

“Consequently, the money deposit banks have been directed to commence the collection of the duty.

“Banks are to collect the N50 stamp duty and remit same to the Nigerian Postal Services (NIPOST) on behalf of the customer.

“The N50 stamp duty is charged per transaction and NOT per volume. Hence, irrespective of the amount, the sum of N50 is to be charged provided such a transaction is N1,000 and above.

“There are however some exemptions and these include payments of salaries and wages, payments and deposits for self-to-self transactions whether inter or intra bank among others,’’ the statement said.

Anyway as a rice-tivist, I and our e-masturbaters will defend after all we are paid for it. But Bubu why remove 50kobo from PMS and COT charges only to slam us with #50+4naira charge. Eh? This na satanic gift o, gives you 50kobo on every litre, takes #50naira on every #1000.
Sorry my fellow rice-tivists for breaking our code.

More than N1.5bn daily...

There are 261 working days in a year ( Non Leap Year )..

Assume one in every four Nigerians do a transaction daily. 35m transactions times N50 times 261 workinng days.

Over N391.5 billion..

I just hope this won't create an avenue for fraud BTW the banks and government agencies that would be responsible for the collection of this tax....

this will make people more responsive and begin to ask questions on what they have used the money collected for

This is still rubbish. We are crying that MAJORITY of Nigerians are suffering and now they are bringing this. Plus now there's a loop hole. The Nigerians i know will now only be paying to themselves. When you want to deposit in someone's account, you withdraw and pay in the person's name. Jst to avoid the Useless 50naira stamp

They should focus on plugging existing leakages in revenue collection and recovering loots from corrupt officials rather than extorting more money from Nigerians that will probably be embezzled as well. The ultimate victim of this charge will be the common man.

We all need to encourage new and young companies in this country. CBN should reverse any policy that works against entrepreneurs and companies.

To God who made me, we need to change our ways as a people. Imagine that our own Nairaland promotes young businesses as it promotes celebrities esp scarcely dressed ones. Talk about a lady with heavy cleavages and you may earn front page. But hint about your business and that post is deleted or hidden. All of us from presidency to our neighborhood need to help each other. It's not everything that is money.

Mere N50 is chicken change, but if the gross total is calculated per working year, i bet it'll amount to billions of hard-earned naira that are waiting to be looted by another power-broker

Any new policy is against me and you. we pay tax, now stamp duty. Oil is finished now they want to drill from me and you. The worst is that we don't have a choice. We are all law abiding citizens... Only God can judge US.

Very wise decision.

Now Nigeria can make cool money for developmental projects.

This is similar to what Chief Awolowo did during civil that made Nigeria prosecute war without borrowing for almost 3 years.

Free education too was possible in the Western Region just because of Education Tax policy by Awolowo. This is better than increasing VAT to 10% which would have increased prices of goods and services thereby shooting inflation up.

God bless Emiefele for this

God bless PYO

God bless PMB.
