Your English is very good, that's nice good luck to all of us.

No, haven't seen any on this forum. I have come across some though on Facebook. Their status changed to being reviewed by the local embassy and then re-changed to being assessed. January is almost over now. Only thing left now is to see if we make it for the interviews or not.

I'm Ethiopian, so I have no idea what's going on with applicants from my country. I am yet to meet any on the net. But am assuming all Africans will undergo pretty much the same process. The applicant I was referring to whose status briefly changed to "Being reviewed by the local embassy" is from South East Asia.

The exam was cool bro. The reading was almost the sweetest self, to be honest tho right from time, I didn't usually have issues with the reading and listening. I'm however afraid of what I could score in speaking. Tho I took realdon's advice and sincerely it worked. But overall, I think I was too scared. When the result is out tho, I would share it here. Thanks for asking.
As for the questions covered, I will advice you practice using Barron's Ielts text book and also Google sample videos. There are some on YouTube.
Nice bro. Wish you the best on the outcome

Its 13days after exams that result is usually released. So hopefully by Friday or saturday if there is no extension in my case. I should be able to post.
BTW, has anyone tried logging in to their portal on chevening website yesterday/today. Mine is not opening, not a case of password tho. I believe its probably because the site is busy cos of their shortlisting.

Hey guys, regarding IELTS, I had already registered for IELTS before I found out there was a special IELTS (IELTS for UKVI) which is required before one could apply for a UK visa. Though I did very well in the IELTS (7.5 overall), would I still need to take the IELTS for UKVI?

Regards.

I got this from the British Council website (https://takeielts.britishcouncil.org/ielts-ukvi/test-takers-faqs#Can%20I%20use%20any%20IELTS%20test%20result?)

Can I use any IELTS test result for UK visa application?

These changes are effective from 6 April 2015.

To assist with the transition, the UK government has announced they will accept results from all IELTS tests taken on or before 22 April. This means that you can submit your past IELTS results to UKVI if:

your visa application requires you to supply results from a Secure English Language Test, and
your IELTS test date was on or before 22 April 2015, and
your IELTS test was taken at any of the 1,000 IELTS test locations around the world, and
you submit your application to UKVI before 5 November 2015.
From 23 April, you will require results from an “IELTS for UKVI” test from one of the locations listed here.

If you require an “IELTS for UKVI” test to meet UKVI’s requirements, then you can register here for upcoming “IELTS for UKVI” tests.

I think the appropriate test we are to register for is IELTS for UKVI.

Chevening accepts both the UKVI and Academic IELTS tests. However, for the sake of the universities it's better to take the Academic module. If you win an award, and during visa processing you are required to take the UKVI, then do it. That's my advice. Because the latter is only specifically for visa-related issues. Check this link:

That time of the year has finally come and we know how anxious you’ve been about it! We’ll shortly be informing candidates whether they progressed to the next stage of selection.
If you are invited to interview, make sure you book it as soon as possible because slots will fill up quickly and can’t be rescheduled.
If unfortunately you weren’t selected, please don’t be discouraged! We hope you apply again in the summer.[Via Linkedin and Facebook]

How the preliminary assessment is done...and by who

Chevening Scholarships 2016/17 Reading Committee

We are pleased to announce applications for 2016/17 Chevening Scholarships Reading Committees are now open.

Chevening Scholarships

Chevening Scholarships are the UK government's global scholarship programme, funded by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) and partner organisations. Offered in over 160 countries and territories (excluding the EU and USA), awards are for a one year Master's degree in any subject at any UK university.

There are over 44,000 Chevening alumni worldwide who together comprise an influential and highly regarded global network.

The programme grants awards to outstanding scholars with proven leadership potential and a commitment to creating positive change in their respective fields. All scholars return to their home countries after their year in the UK to implement the skills they have gained.

For the 2015/16 academic year we welcomed over 1,800 scholars to the UK, a significant increase on the 650 scholars from the previous year.

For more information on Chevening Scholarships please visit www.chevening.org

Chevening Selection Process

Applications for Chevening Scholarships are received online via the Chevening website and all applications go through a rigorous selection process. Eligible applications are assessed by an independent Reading Committee based in London who create a long list of applicants. Longlisted applications are then reviewed by the British Embassies and High Commissions overseas who create a shortlist of candidates to interview. Interviews are held in early 2016 before final selections are made.

Reading Committees

Reading Committees play a crucial part in the selection of Scholars and are responsible for assessing and evaluating applications. Each reading committee comprises of two members; a Regional Specialist and an Academic Specialist, who will read applications from one or more countries from the same region of the world. Reading Committee members will be assigned based on their experience and areas of expertise. For both roles, experience of working with scholarship programmes would be a distinct advantage.

Regional Specialists are expected to have substantial international experience across a wide range of countries and/or a region as a whole. They will be asked to assess the applicant's leadership experience and networking skills; their potential and aspirations to be a future leader, decision maker and influencer; and their ability to influence change in their home country. Regional Specialists will also be expected to submit a short written report summarising the applications they have reviewed, and detailed guidance will be provided for this.

Academic Specialists should have substantial experience in assessing candidates for entry onto UK postgraduate courses, from a range of subject areas. They will be asked to assess the applicant's academic background; the relevance and suitability of their chosen fields of study to their future career and development of their sector and country; and whether they have fully researched and can explain their chosen courses and institutions. The Academic Specialist will also be expected to provide feedback to the Regional Specialist for their written report.

Reading Committee Assessment Process

The Reading Committee will be asked to review individual applications and make an assessment on the quality of each applicant against the Chevening selection criteria. These criteria include leadership and networking skills, academic background, potential, career and future plans. Extensive guidance and training will be provided.

Each application must be read and independently assessed by both members of the Reading Committees. On average it should take between 7-10 minutes to assess one application but committee members will find that they review applications at a quicker rate as they progress through the assessment process.

Reading Committee members will submit their score directly on to the online system and the combined scores of the two Reading Committee members will be used to prepare a long list of applications that will be sent to British Embassies and High Commissions overseas.

There will be a mandatory training session for all Reading Committee members on Monday 23 November where members will be briefed on the marking criteria and given the opportunity to mark test applications and to meet the other committee members. Any subsequent meetings will be held virtually.

We are not able to provide a definitive number of applications that each Reading Committee will assess because applications are still open. However, this year we plan for each Reading Committee member to review between 500-800 applications each.

Timeline

All Reading Committee members should be available to attend the mandatory training session in London on Monday 23 November 2015. Travel costs up to a set limit will be reimbursed, and further information will be provided closer to the time.

Chevening applications will be available for Reading Committees to assess on 25 November 2015. We are working to a tight timeline, so all scores from Reading Committee members must be submitted by 3 January 2016 at the latest.

Payment

Reading Committee members will receive financial compensation for their time and valued contributions. You will receive £1.50 per application assessed and the total lump sum you will receive is dependent on the number of applications assessed. Regional Specialists will receive an additional £200 for the completion of a short written report.

Paying tax and national insurance is the responsibility of the committee member, and payment will be in sterling to a UK bank account.

How to apply

Please send a CV along with a covering letter, outlining:

(a) Full name
(b) Postal and email addresses
(c) Phone number(s)
(d) Position you are applying for (you may apply for both)
(e) Suitability for the role(s) including country-specific interest/knowledge (see Regional Breakdown annex)
(f) Confirmation of availability (for dates stated in the timeline section above)
(g) Willingness to sign a confidentiality agreement

Applications and enquiries should be emailed to sifting@chevening.org for the attention of Julia Phelps, International Liaison Manager in the Chevening Secretariat.

The deadline to apply is Friday 30 October 2015 at 17:00 (GMT). Telephone interviews will take place between 9 and 13 November.
