Good evening Sabi mamas, please I am having cold, running nose, headache. What can I use, scared of taking drugs cause I am breastfeeding. Urgent advice needed

Cinakin: All you can have is paracetamol except you get something else prescribed by your doctor. Make sure you are well hydrated with lots of fluids annd try to get as much rest as you can manage.

Some vit.C may also help but as with most colds, the virus will just have to run its course. Also ensure the house is well aired as it helps ro get rid of the airborne virus that can hang around.

I hope you dont pass the cold onto your LO.... good luck

Pls mamas I need effective potty training tip before I go crazy( not from Google o). She always wants to sit on the potty but won't go, Not once and it's been over 3months now. She just turned two and anywhere she sees a toilet she'll request to go.
I give her plenty drinks plus water. She can sit on the potty for two hours but as soon as she gets down from the potty she'll pee on the floor or in her diaper. I've run out of diapers and ain't in the mood to buy more.
I blame myself, I should have started earlier.

Is the pain from him latching or is he biting you? Cos if it's just the latching, I would say check his mouth he might have a thrush and it might be yeast infection from your own side.

Try to drink hot or warm water with lemon, four or five times a day. It's save while breastfeeding, I use it all the time and I'm still breastfeeding my 14 months old baby.

Hello tatacherie, Cinakin

The freezer is your friend. Use it.
Also try and get a good insulated cooling bag ( or two) and some gel ice packs ( the blue type). I have the medela storage bag and ice pack set... (you can get from amazon)

You can freeze some of the bottles directly check with the products you have if that is possible. I use the medela pump and bottles which come with a cover, i also have some inherited avent bottles and i just bought the sealing caps for them and these go into the freezer for emergency days!

If you freeze some of the expressed milk and also the ice packs and wack them all in the cooling bag it keeps cool for a very long time. I have had 6 hrs use with this on a day out and the frozen milk was still mostly frozen, and the refrigirated milk still very cold. Enough that i could still return them back to the fridge / freezer.

I have also tried a very basic approach of using 2 cooling bags, one inside the other with ice in a freezer bag. And this kept the milk a decent temperature overnight for my one attempt at a night bottle feed.

If the creche has a fridge, ask them to pop the cooling bags in the fridge. And then they can warm up the bottles as required in hot water. Take the sealing caps off and pop on the teats and they are good to go.

At the end of the day, you pick up all the empties and left overs and review what can go back into the fridge for the next day's use or thrown out. . ( Just so you know the quality of the milk they give your child. As you may be tempted to leave the unused milk at the creche, but you cany really vouch for how they have been stored during the day.)

Other tips: also allow for at least 2 or more teats, prepacked and sterelised in your kit as well.

try labelling the bottles, especially if you re-use the stash from the day before so the creche staff can use the old ones first.

You should also try to express at work if you have a private office/ space you can use and a fridge/ freezer you can store them in. Just use the same storage process to get the milk home. As it will be nigh on imposible to express all your baby needs at night when you get home. Plus your boobs will be hard as rocks and straining to burst out of your clothes if you do.

Final tip: DO NOT USE A HAND PUMP FOR THIS!!!.... except you have hands of steel..... invest in an electric pump! They use both mains and batteries. However beware electricity fluctuations so if you are in naija it may be safer to invest in a few duracells or energizers, with an extra set always on hands.

Hope this helps

Your best bet is to freeze in small feeding bottles.this is so that she finishes one bottle per meal time. The creche will warm it by placing in hot water shortly before her meal times.

Depending on the crèche instruct the nannies not to dilute with water and to ensure they don't give her left over bm.

How far with the episiotomy meme? Have you been able to get medical assessment?

Mydreams25, thanks for your semolina and milk recipe.
My lo was to eat semo and ewedu this afternoon. I had it in mind to deal with him by adding a bit of stew to his ewedu so he can cry and go to bed. He has been naughty. Woke up since 6am and has been scattering the whole place. I actually forgot to bring out the ewedu from the freezer.. chei!
After making the semo I checked the ewedu and it was stone blocked..my lo was already dancing that food was coming..so I remembered ur recipe.
I added d milk and gave my lo.. he spat it out and started crying. I added two teaspoons of honey and added more milk.. oh boy it was yummmy. By the time I gave him the next spoon he started saying mama, mama, aya(oya)...he pulled me to sit on d floor and he whoop the full bowl down..when I said finished..hi 5! He just slapped me and started crying.. shoo...semo he ordinarily would not have finished if I gave him with ewedu..i had to pet him o! But his hand is painful o!
It's now semo and milk all d way!
U rock girl!

Mothers in the house Una well done. Please help a ftm. My lo turned six months on the 10th. Woke up last week to see two teeth, didn't experience the usual teething phrase then. But yesterday he started having running stool in fact mostly water. I started the Ors and zinc treatment same yesterday but as at today no improvement whatsoever it even seems worse. He is still active but he has refused to eat only bf. Is it the teething or just reacting to something else? How do I get the stooling to stop? Sorry for the long essay

Dont feel bad about it, and its not your fault! All babies are different my girls learnt by the time they were 3 years old. Continue with what you are doing... I now its expensive but have you tried pull-ups? Mix both potty training with pull-ups during the day, continue to gage with your child by asking her whether she wants to go to the toilet or not. With time she will be able to associate the feeling of going to the toilet with the potty, all this work will eventually pay off! wink

Stop the formula and observe your baby. It could be fussy or gassy. Try and get dr brown feeding bottle. If you notice colic You can as well try colic calm

sounds like colic.

have you tried 'infacol'? its quite effective. [/quote]

Good day all,

Please I bought a pack of SA Huggies (38 diapers), size 2 for 3-6kg and I have a couple questions.
1. Is it a good brand? This is because I'm seeing mixed reviews about it....
2. How many packs do I need for a new born? Will 1 pack of 38 diapers be adequate or to get 1 more?
2b. How many months can a baby wear size 2 diapers?
3. If I have to change it, what other brand can I get?

Thanks in anticipation!

Hello breadfruit,

Although i havent used the SA huggies brand, the thing with reviews is that for every person that thinks its the best thing since the resurrection of christ, another person will think its absolute sh*t!.

One average a new born will need to be changed anything between 6 to 12 times a day. For newborn nappies as long as it has the wetness indicator strip which changes colour when its wet that is all you really need. This is because newborns wee very little in the first weeks - only about a teaspoon at a time in the first few days, so this indicator is good way of checking all his/her internal plumbing is working ok. wink

So if you average changing about 8 -10 times a day a pack of 38 will last about 4 days.

How long your baby stays in that nappy size will depend on how much the LO weighs at birth and how much they put on..... mine averages at putting on about 1kg per month for the first 2-3 months. So we out grew the size 2 just before 3 months. Now at 4 months we go through about 6 no size 3 nappies on an uneventful day

You will also be able to tell by eye if the nappies look too small on your LO. Or when you start getting too many poo leaks .... it may be time to go up in size.

I got both pampers and huggies as gifts as those are the most popular brands and i have used other un-branded ones as well and i find i like different things in each one. You can try a few brands before you decide which you prefer, both in performance and cost-wise and buy in bulk.

PS. I also use cloth nappies and will be using that exclusively when my "gifts" run out except for the odd out of town/ long distance travel when i will go with disposable, however that is a whole different subject matter. grin
