Arik Air’s business activities were on Wednesday disrupted by members of several aviation unions over an alleged N12.4 billion debts owed the Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria (FAAN).
According to report, several passengers were left stranded at the General Aviation Terminal (GAT) of the Murtala Muhammed Airport as placard-carrying unionists frustrated the operation of the airline as early as 6.30am.

Some stranded passengers were seen demanding a refund from the airline staff while others were making alternative arrangements on how to be able to depart for their destinations.

The Nigerian Travel Flight Deck reports that the union members said they resorted to blocking the airline from operating this morning after years of negotiation with the airline over the debt failed to yield any result.

Some of the placards had inscriptions such as: ‘Arik pay your 12.4bn debt’, ‘FAAN can no longer pay salaries, pension, staff claims due to your debt.’ “Debtors pay all you owe FAAN now.’ ‘Arik if you can’t pay don’t fly’, “Arik pay your debt, 12.4bn is too much.’

The General Secretary of the National Union of Air Transport Employees (NUATE) Olayinka Abioye, said in a statement that: “We are engaged in picketing exercise against Arik Air over its indebtedness to FAAN in the sum of N12.5b”.

FAAN’s spokesperson, Yakubu Datti, confirmed the picketing of the airline but could not provide further details.

The spokesperson of Arik Air, Ola Banji, said it was spurious for FAAN to claim it’s been owed N12.4 billion.

Just sell off the aircrafts ....that is it

7 reasons why they cant pay:

1. Existing liabilities: debt owed banks, suppliers, FAAN etc is massive.I am sure the cake and water supplied for inflight entertainment would be debts.

2. Profitability: Most of their routes are not lucrative.

3. Competition:stiff competition especially from Peace, Dana, Aero, Flynation, others on lucrative routes of Abuja and Lagos is affecting them. The space in international route is also competitive esp. London and SA.

4. Huge cost of operations

5. Huge maintenance cost

6. Expensive corporate lifestyle

7. Low customer satisfaction and poorly motivated personnel.

There should be turnaround as soon as possible and I would recommend a new management and restructuring.

Where is lalasticlala sef?

Two highly regulated Businesses I hate to venture into:- AIRLINES AND BANKING.
I hail all Entrepreneurs who are in this sectors. I hail all of una. (I mean the Owners not employees in Aviation or in bank that you ask their occupation and they say "I'm a Banker))

If you criticize things happening in Nigeria, pseudo-nationalists who live in Nigeria and benefit from the rot will come for your head. There's practically nothing Nigerians can manage well. Work ethics is zero, we are proud and arrogant only on wrong and negative things - fraud, corruption, shameful materialism, etc. Look at even how our own style of blogging has killed professional journalism. Look at our lives!! Good!!!.....Abeg make una carry go jare.

This is the most useless excuse I've ever heard of in my life...so because of Arik debt, you folks were unable to pay salaries?

I know for sure that despite the fact that FAAN is a revenue generating agency, FG is still giving them 70percent of their revenue in form of subsidy.

They should tell us where the money they stole is hidden...

Arik is d most useless airline in nigeria.

They are even owing NAMA over 1billion naira for navigation charges...if u threaten them, they also threaten you with a phone call from Abuja
