You've all made interesting contributions.

At least people reading your comments would have seen the country (USA/Canada) through your eyes, and know what to expect.

That is what I'd take from all of your individual contributions. Your experiences now, have become mine.

Kudos

You can't study on a visit visa and it will be hard to change from a visit visa to a study visa while in the US.

Best bet is to apply for the masters program and get a student visa, then while there get your mum to file for you.

Edit: if your mum files for you while she has a green card, you will fall under F2A category and t may take about 2 years, so this may work with the timing of a 2 year masters degree.

Hello everyone, please I need advice on this...My mom lives and work in new jersey since 2012.I just graduated from university here in Nigeria and I plan to apply for visit visa and when I get to the states I will apply for masters which I plan to start soon...please is there a chance of coming on a visit visa and study for my masters at the same time...Note my mom will become a permanent resident/ citizen next year and can easily file for me then...thanks

that is not true. .
In most European countries like italy, France and spain, their homes are built with cement. ....I think Americans likes doing their stuff different from others.
Take sport for example. ..football as we all know it, is played by foot but usa is played by chasing after the ball by both hands

Right. But compared to Texas and some other Mid-western places, it's on the high side.
Renting a similar room in Texas goes for between $160-$200.

He is right.

Wood is cheap and abundant. Building with wood is 3-5 times cheaper than building with cement only.

Easy to renovate too.

No vex, but you're a walking contradiction. It's actually become comical and insulting to those trying to leave naija. I won't even get into. But all I want to say is that despite you claiming to be a wise/business individual, why can't you see the business moves your parents did for you ? You think borning you in America was a coincidence ? You think you "deciding" to comeback to America after college was a coincidence too ? My friend even the naija you're hailing your parents knew was crap and planned your easy escape. If you didn't have that yankee passport you'd be back in naija struggling, looking for a way t come abroad. Lets please all respect ourselves abeg, and not discourage those praying to be in your situation.
I thought i was the only one that saw discrepancies in his statements. It's well sha, all naw hustles grin grin

Where are you referring to?
Do people rent rooms (like shared living) or are you referring to an apartment?

Lol. I laughed when I first noticed that. grin
Americans do a lot differently. Temperature is in Fahrenheit, while in many countries it's in Centigrades, weight is in pounds vs kilograms.

I remember getting a speeding ticket driving from Michigan (US), to Toronto (Canada), reason - US road speed limits are in miles/hr, Canada uses km/hr. 70 miles/hr is about 120 km/hr.
I was just pedaling looking at 120 on the road signs, forgetting I'm in a different country that uses a different speed unit from the US. I should have been looking at the km/hr in the speedometer as soon as I crossed from US to Canada. Seems kinda weird though..Canada and Mexico share borders with the US. Not sure why US standards are different from the other countries.

Referring to shared-living.
Usually, land lords would allow 2 people to rent out a room in a 2-bedroom apartment. Then both roommates split the monthly rent. So, if the rent is $1000/month, each rookie gets to pay $500.

You are right. Many students are drowning in student loan debt. In fact, many students owe up to $60,000 of undergrad debt.

But a significant portion of the students drowned in debt majored in bullshit programs like Human Development; Women's a Studies and African-American Studies. So, they only have themselves to blame if they could only find jobs that paid $10/hr.

Attending medical school and/or Law school can easily plunge a student into a $100,000 student loan debt. That's a big reason why admission of non US-trained doctors in America is too restricted.

After all, the Nigerian-trained Dr with no debt would be content with receiving a "lower" salary than a fresh US-trained Dr battling with $200k in debt. For instance, a Nigerian-trained Dr would be ok with earning $45,000/month, but the fresh grad of Harvard Medical School will likely demand no less than $95,000/month. It ends up further driving down wages in the field, ditto for the engineering field.

Thus, in reality, most new US doctors have a lower net worth than mechanics, contractors, truck drivers and plumbers. Most of these professionals didn't have to go to a 4-yr college to obtain their certifications, and took out little ($2,000 or less) or no student loans at all.

Thanks CFCman for your observation. Two of my uncles are doctors in Maryland. You are even required to have a first degree before going to medical school so in actual fact it will take over 12 yrs to actually become a doctor in America, counting residency. I am not here to bad mouth living abroad but insulting your mother's land is a no no for me. I was surprised to find out most Americans complain about their roads and infrastructure than Nigerians do, then I realize that poverty is defined by where you live. Yes some Nigerians are doing well in the US., but success is for those who choose to embrace reality and not some kid fantasies like what that other dude was trying to portray. We are adults now and no longer kids

You have to also factor in relative standards in Nigeria and the US. With regard to public infrastructure, the US Civil Engineering Society gave America's roads, and bridges a D rating, meaning that the infrastructure is rated somewhere between 60%-69%. But in comparison to Nigeria, America's infrastructure is near perfect.

Moreover, in the US, you are guaranteed to be treated during an emergency before payment. It's bad that many, if not most, hospitals in Nigeria insist on some degree of payment before commencing treatment during a medical emergency.
