You haven't presented an economic argument.

What economic argument do you expect me to present against "Oga, let's have the same conversation in December"? grin

Some of you're just clowns. I bet you supported the fixed policy. But now that the confused government decided to ditch that and try a next method, you jumped on that bandwagon as well.

So what's there to argue with a perpetual flip-flopper?

You've internet access...keep yourself busy and have a mind of ya own. You can start with inflation and, move to economies that're dependent on one commodity, and balance of trade (BOT). I'm not here to spoon-feed a robot.

You must be sick...go to western union to pick money or send money then ask them the rate before you start jumping into conclusions like a fowl..
How many business people in Nigeria buy dollar for their imported items from Western Union, you cant get bulk dollar from western union, dollar will always be scarce in Nigeria as that is peculiar to any import dependent country, you cant do magic to make dollar fall that is why they float and move it from 197 to 288 and will continue to climb unless if CBN intervene occasionally to pump in dollars from reserve.

You don't expect goods that just landed from ship to be immediately cheap on the shelves of supermarket, it takes some days to be cheap or when old stock is finished or the new goods are now on the shelve.

In the same vein the interbank FX market just started yesterday it will take some time for prices to reflected on shelves of your banks, just chills good times are in the horizon.

My only fear is a hegemony among the FX cabal

News like this make some people who had foresight about how this economy will go smile.

The truth is this, the Richest people are those who invested in hard times like we have in Nigeria currently than those that saves.

Saving in time like this can never be the best.

I only used western union as an example to make you understand that the gap between the interbank market and black market rate has reduced massively which will enable balance between the demand and supply...how have people been buying before this year??

Go and check CFA exhange to dollar that just clashes last week, no magic can make naira to stop crashing in line with other import dependent countries currency unless if you have stable electricity in Nigeria that can boost the industrial sector. You people should stop chasing shadows, CBN know it already and float the Naira to protect dwindling foreign reserve the Borden is now on the masses. People buy bulk dollar from BDC and BDC buy some from CBN and Abokis, banks cannot even sell bulk dollars to unregistered businesses, how many businesses is registered in Nigeria and small scale businesses control Nigeria market or any African market

And before that time the government is ready to tackle the problem ,should the CBN now fold their arms and not take a step which they took!?

I never supported the fixed regime, in fact, it was my biggest grouse with the government.

From an economic standpoint, this should have been done months ago.

First of all, the naira was already devalued, How many people were getting it at 197...

less than 1% of prospective buyers got dollar at #197 when it was that rate.
even the almighty fuel importers couldn't get at that rate.
there's already inflation, everything u buy is at the black market rate.
plane ticket is at black market rate and only buhari's daughter pays her school fees at the rate of #197 to a dollar.
thus, there's no need keeping it at that unrealistic rate.
in fact, whosoever buy dollar at #197 is defrauding the nation because he's buying a heavily subsidised dollar.

While I agree with you that a very small percentage have access to the previous rate, I don't agree with you on cost of transactions vis-a-vis flight tickets, tuition fees, etc. Nigerians always like shady or dudgy transactions. Hence, they're unable to present a valid case for receiving foreign exchange at official rates. With a genuine reason, people still get dollars at 197. You shouldn't expect someone whose business was illegitimate (Eg importation of contraband goods) to be granted dollars at 197, such a person would even bother applying, he'll rather patronise the parallel market since he/she can't provide the required documents for verification.

Furthermore, I have booked flights at 200, since the CBN pegged that rate for aviation businesses; those who use wakanow.com can easily agree with this claim as the naira equivalent of the tickets are proportional to the cbn rate. Just on Friday, I booked a flight (Return) to Australia for $1830, and I called the airline (South Africa Airways, which was the cheapest at the time) personnel and I was advised to pay in N364,000 for the fare. I couldn't do that and the booking was cancelled by Sunday. I rebook ed same flight at the same price, and I was told to pay N531,375 today.

Finally, a friend applied for Tuition fee payment and got it at N197 back in January; another got his BTA ($5000) at 197 in February. I was about processing my PTA for the aforementioned travel, and my bank (SC) confirmed it does it at N197. I just contacted my bank, and I was told it'll now be at the prevailing rate. In conclusion, yes the 197 rate wasn't easily accessible, but it was actually available to qualified applicants, and was far better than subjecting everyone to a profit oriented floating rate. Banks will definitely exploit it. I'm only speaking as a layman in finance/economics. So, you may have better explanations which may be difficult for me to understand. But I'm sure a fixed or pegged CBN rate whether 250 0r 300 would have been much better. Even if the decision was floating the rate, the CBN should have had the authority to do so. Leaving to the banks is a complete disaster considering the fact that they're badly hit by the treasury single account and other limitations they faced from EFCC, they'll want to recuperate asap.

Access bank 312 around this morning but there is so much volatility going on in the interbank market so a buying price of 318 can go to 290 within seconds or Go to 330 within seconds...some intelligent Nigerians are taking advantage of this type of market by doing arbitrage.. including me...

The new policy now made some banks to be the primary dealer,so CBN Is no longer the one in charge....so Now here is one of the strategies..E.g each Bereau de change buy differently from different banks..and due to the new policy each banks have their own selling rates above the interbank rate..

e.g at yesterday access bank rate was around 318 yesterday, gtb 339-340 etc....now if aboki A buys from access bank of course his own buying and selling rate will be different from Aboki B that bought his own dollars from GTB,buy from aboki A and sell to Aboki B....though the price difference might just be 5naira per dollar but imagine a transaction of 1000$ it means you can earn a profit of at least 3000 naira per transaction..I personally did 6 transactions yesterday and I earned 22k from it..I did not transact today because the market is too volatile this morning on the interbank market...but remember that it is not everyday that this strategy will work.....am not even supposed to be telling you one of the strategies...grin
