It seems we do have this type of snakes here a lot , it is very common here at umuahia abia state. I've googled to search for its type but I saw it is not black mamba or Eastern Brown snake. I did kill and bury this cos I felt it came for my kitten. How venomous is it? Anybody knowledgeable should please help out.

I have one question?

Before you killed it did you observe its movement?

Was it moving sideways? If yes, then what you are holding is a Carpet Viper.

Its quite venomous although not sufficiently lethal to kill a man except of course you suffer the most unlikely mishap of getting bit by 3 vipers.

It will however make you very uncomfortable should this little critter bite you.

It is venomous. Just not lethal enough to kill a man. Dont be fooled by the eyes. That is not a determining at all

In as much as I agree with all you have written i will tell you that holding a snakes head like the op has done you would know of a snake is venomous or not cos the venoms fangs are not like the other dentition they stand out in length and are separated from the others most have the look of a switch blade so this snake is definitely a non venomous snake...
you can't tell for sure from the angle the op took his picture. you said fangs look like switchblades, and you are right...and if that is true, then like a switchblade, the fangs will be curved backwards and resting on the roof of the snake's mouth...only projecting outward when it wants to inject venom...

Wtf!

It could still bite with double venom within an hour after it's head got chopped off.

Why do you people love to disrupt natural ecological order? Why did you kill this snake, when you are the one invading his habitat of hundreds if not thousands of years.

It is the same disruptive behavior which contributes to herdsmen/farmer conflicts.

@OP Shame on you for killing that snake.

Re: What Kind Of Snake Is This? by demolagilbert: 2:58pm On Jul 06, 2016
1. It's not a mamba, mamba are either green or black..and they are both very very bad news. The black mamba's inner mouth is black hence the name..mamba are typically very very long..this snake is not green and is not a black mamba.
2. It is not a rattle snake or a viper. Chances are you cant find a rattle snake in Nigeria. It's like saying you can find a tiger in Nigeria. Even vipers arent so much in these parts. Vipers are not so long, thick in the middle and have a big, ugly head, usu thats a very easy way to identify them, same for rattle snakes except the rattle snake has a signature tail that vibrates and gives a rattling sound as a warning..hence the name rattle snake.
3. Seeing as the man closely observed the head, it's most likely not a venomous snake. Even when the fangs are retractdd, you would still see it with close observation as the op has done.
4. I think it's just a non-venomous snake that preys on small animals, rodents, lizards, insects and such.
Re: What Kind Of Snake Is This? by BlackBaron: 2:58pm On Jul 06, 2016
It's extremely ignorant for anyone to suggest that the eye shape of snakes can be used to predict if venomous or not. embarassed
Lots of venomous snakes are in Nigeria, from Gaboon vipers, puff adders, west african green mamba, green bush viper, tree cobra, spitting cobras.

A common problem is a lot of Nigerians especially in the North/Middle belt die because of almost no known anti-venom laboratory here in Nigeria. Unless you're very knowledgeable, stay the fucck away from snakes.

Besides, most snakes tuck their fangs in until ready to bite and infuse venom, So it is retractable.
