ASUU To FG: You’re Responsible For Education Backwardness In Nigeria by Nobody: 10:46am On Jul 19, 2016
By Johnbosco Agbarakwu

ABUJA—THE Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, yesterday accused the Federal Government of being responsible for the backwardness of education in the country which had affected its global rating.

ASUU lamented that instead of the budgetary allocation to improve, it was only reducing and called on the government to commence the process for the payment of N623 billion, being backlog of earned academic allowances and funding of universities.

National President of ASUU, Comrade Biodun Ogunyemi, while briefing journalists in Abuja, also kicked against the proposed plan by the federal government to scrap the post-University Matriculation Tertiary Examination, saying the Joint Admission and Matriculations Board, JAMB, could not admit students for universities.

He frowned on the alleged continuous breach of various Memorandum of Understanding, MoU, signed between the government and ASUU between 2009 and 2015, adding that the Federal Government was in arrears of N495 billion as at the first quarter of 2016, in respect of the NEEDS assessment fund for the revitalisation of public universities.

He further accused the Federal Government of failing to disburse the outstanding balance of N65,833,047,372.24 (2009-2013), in addition to N62,417,645,224.23 (2014-2016) amounting to N128,250,692,596.47 as contained in the report of the2009 FGN-ASUU agreement implementation Committee, IMC.

Ogunyemi warned against undue and further delay in the implementation of various agreements signed between both parties.

ASUU strongly condemned the decision by the federal government to scrap the conduct of POST-UME, saying the decision did not serve the interest of Nigerians and that the university tertiary matriculation examination, UTME, conducted by JAMB is not credible enough to warrant the cancellation of the post UTME tests.

Ogunyemi said the action by government was typical of its current lukewarm attitude towards the spirit and letters of the FGN/ASUU agreement of 2009, vowing that the union as an important stakeholder in the university system will continue to draw the attention of all concerned to possible threat to peaceful development and growth of the Nigerian Education System.

He said: ”We consider it appalling that no consultation with stakeholders especially with ASUU and the Vice Chancellors was held before such far reaching national policy like the cancellation of Post Ume was pronounced.

“In a fundamental way, the policy undermines the autonomy of universities andpowers of universities’ senate as the highest policy making body on academic matters, particularly admission of students and award of university degrees.”

The ASUU boss further questioned the veracity of the claim by the Education Minister Malam Adamu Adamu that ‘’the nation has confidence in what JAMB is doing” and that as a result of this, tertiary institutions do not need to conduct further tests towards admitting students UTME candidates, saying even a former Minister of education, Mrs Chinwe Obaji, in 2005 questioned the credibility of most JAMB high fliers, who even though they scored as high as 280 performed abysmally low in the post ume exercise.

Buhari is a pachyderm, so don't expect him to listen to you, Especially now that he is surrounded by sycophants that are seasoned in lauding him in his failures and insensitivity.

How can you impose an unsolicited educational policy without consulting and deliberating with the major stakeholders in the field? this autocratic FG has reduced our civil servants to mere peasants in the society.

Jonathan decided to allow freedom of speech and political expressions to thrive in other to bring peace and encourage democracy and yet, some people were angry with him for not demonstrating autocracy and despotism.

The FG is just deluding Nigerians. The post-ume fee was just changed to Screening Fee. The Universities can still extort money from the public.

do u expect a president without certificate to value education

Bros, no vex,
Reason with your head and not mouth. ASUU is blaming the FG for reneging on various MOUs since 2009-2015 in which your Hero, Looter-in-Chief, GEJ was Vice President, Acting President and President throughout. This government is just over a year and were never part of the agreements, though it is still binding on them.

blueto:
He frowned on the alleged continuous breach of various Memorandum of Understanding, MoU, signed between the government and ASUU between 2009 and 2015,

ASUU on the other hand can't claim to be above boards, both parties are to blame but more on FG

Bunch of old thieves. If you believe post-UME is that important, why not come together with JAMB and suggest ways to make it better?

1) They say universities are meant for research but in Nigeria, undergraduates hate research. They do copy and paste when project defence is near! What a shame!!!

2) We have been producing professors in different fields, yet, these folks can't even organize a research study or produce anything meaningful. What a disgrace!

3) The government in Poland spends a certain percentage of their annual budget on university research. Here, to fund education is a problem! Oh, what an embarrassment!

4) Our undergraduates 'sort' themselves out in school and come out of school dumber than a dummy! See shame!

5) No Nigerian university is among the first 1000 in the world! Oya, see embarrassment nah!

6) We still rely on ancient textbooks and old useless machines in Engineering faculties! Una dey see am?

7) We have been producing professors in Engineering, yet they can't even produce a wristwatch! My sympathy!!!

8. It is now preferable to school in places like Slovenia, Slovakia, Romania, Gambia, Czech Republic, Bulgaria and even Kenya!!!

9) Many graduates are 'half-baked' and 'quarter-baked'. Many can't write an essay of just one page; there are others who can't read beyond 20 lines; they are many on this forum!

Chai!!! Ah dor die! angry

Our educational system sucks. we are still using the 1970 British curriculum. how can a graduate of this modern age be incapable of operating a computer? Only the serious minds make it out as refined, and that can only happen based on personal effort. many graduates cannot write a simple informal letter. many cannot defend their fields. TBH even our lecturers know little about the courses they claim to lecture. i sorry for the future of Nigeria. What is the value of education in Nigeria today? yahoo n political thugs are the one counting the dollars in the society. i wish Ogboni cult go open their own university

I thought that it is the local government and the state government that are responsible for the primary schools and secondary schools respectively.
Are they not the foundation of the education system?
So how can ASUU be talking of the FG as if they are illiterates?
