I woke up to a thread with the caption"An Igbo Trader Arrested For Naming His Dog Buhari". https://www.nairaland.com/3293032/trader-arrested-naming-dog-buhari/8#48553955

This trader was arrested for not only calling his personal property buhari, but also inscribing the name buhari on both sides of his dog. He was arrested by the police for provocative behaviour capable of causing ethnic rivalry. The purpose of creating this thread is to use this particular scenario in comparing two countries (America and Nigeria) both practicing democracy and showing why they both advanced differently. Whatever judgement you reach after reading is a function of your IQ.
In 2010,an American pastor in the person of Terry Jones threatened to burn the koran, reason being he thinks Islam is a religion from the devil. He was condemned internationally, one would think he would be getting arrested sooner than later for threatening public peace by the FBI,but no arrest was made. He wasn't arrested because America as a country understands the principle of rights and privileges. It took a phone call from President Barack Obama to Pastor Terry Jones, appealing to his sensibilities to understand the consequences of his action on the safety of U.S troops serving in the Middle East, the planned koran burning wasn't to be after this emotional phone call.
Coming home, this igbo guy was arrested and kept in a cell, simply for naming his dog buhari, who is buhari?
On a closing note,by now we should be able to tell why both countries developed differently. One understands the conversation of dialogue, the other understands the conversation of force.
We can see the conversation of force in the way ipob, nda, this igbo trader cases are being handled.

Mynd44, reading this might help your sensibilities. Btw,i never insulted you. Gracias!

so what point do you intend to drive home? Although I despise and detest Buhari because of how he thwarted democracy in 1985, his harsh economic policies and his static nature, that wouldn't warrant me to go as far as naming my dog Buhari. The fact remains that a dog in Calabar is more useful and revered in ss/se than Buhari. However, it inciting to name your dog Buhari, especially in south west and northern Nigeria

The Police arrested the dog owner following a complaint lodged by his neighbor a hausa man who claimed the trader insulted his father's name by naming his dog Buhari.

The Hausa man had threatened to take action against the trader if the police did not make an arrest.

This is what the Police is using to detain the trader claiming that by name his dog after Buhari he was inciting public disturbance!

Now if we scrutinize this closely, any foolish ab0ki dunce can lodge a complaint based on any frivilous matter and threaten violence if the Police does not act.

This is social blackmailing!

Some people name their pets after people they like or admire.

First of . . . you need to get the story straight.

I posted the bellow on same thread.
The complainant was a Mr. Buhari, a neighbor who felt offended. Agreed, the dog owner has the legal right to name his pet any name, fine, the northerners are easily offended (which I find appalling), but incitement to disturb the peace is a serious one.

According to the report, the man not only named his dog 'Buhari', his neighbor's name ( probably they were best of enemies), he wrote it on both sides of the dog -- that's overly mischievous, and a threat to public peace.

The location matters (he has a neighbour by that name). I remember naming my dog Hitler in the mid 90s (thinking he will be fierce, dog was as timid as a mouse . . . ended up being stolen and eaten by some neighbour), but that was in Ibadan (the average resident in my area then could careless, that is if they even know who or what Hitler represents) it would have been f00lish and insensitive to do that in a Jewish community, German community, even anywhere in Europe, or have a jewish neighbour.

We need to learn to live with each other in peace, even we think twice before naming our kids, checking to see how it will be perceived, that does not mean we do not have a right to.

It is not everything you have a right to, that you exercise your right on.

BTW, I think this should be a civil case, and the guy shouldn't be behind bars for over a week now, but this is a reflection of our immature justice system, that protects only the rich or influential.

what should baffle you is the fact that the trader was denied bail for such a trivial matter even if that thing was an offence just because the northerners (his accusers) didn't want him to be bailed and not because the constitution denied him such right. The Ogun state commissioner of police has been acting suspiciously recently so the blame is on his shoulders here

mynd44 will do everything to defend buhari and and its unfortunate. sometimes I wonder if those people who always support evil act perpetuated under this administration has human blood in their veins. A chimpanzee was named HARUNA back then in Ibadan zoo, whereas a popular musician( Late Haruna Ishola) bears that name and nobody makes any trouble out of that .

You can name your dog Buahri
You can name your Pig Ojukwu.

But you have to consider your Location first for your own safety.

Excellent. It is quite evident that some human beings are doing everything possible to ignite ethnic crisis in this country but they will not succeed and even if they do, they may not live to tell the stories as they will be consumed by the the crisis.

You don't say...

You mean like how the yoruba envagelist got hacked to death in Abuja because she dared to preach in a muslim dominated neighborhood?

Or did the 70yr old Igbo woman deserved to be butchered in front of her shop for daring to ask a muslim to take his abolution ritual away from her shop?

It is your right to name your pet whatever you wish and I'm pretty sure my parents' names aren't so unique that they are the only ones in the world with their names. Bottom line, I won't care.

Leave this clowns. They love living in self deceit. Let them keeo whining over the place. What baffles me is how they make silly comparisons. Something happened in USA which is 90% not islam, comparing that with a religious and ethnic volatile state like Nigeria. Will they accept if an Hausa or Yoruba man, write Ojukwu or Kanu on their dog in Aba, Enugu, or Anambra? Useless hypocrites.
