A group, the Middle Belt Alliance (MBA), which claimed to represent the interest of indigenes of Northcentral states, has begun moves for the separation of the region from the North.

It decried the current arrangement where Middle Belt indigenes are grouped with the Hausa-Fulani with the intent to create a façade of one North.

Rising from its inaugural meeting in Makurdi, the Benue State capital, the group said it had resolved, among others, to ensure that the region no longer “plays the second fiddle” and is treated as an equal stakeholder in the Nigerian project.

In a communiqué by its Chairman, Dr. Leonard Shilgba, and Secretary, Comrade Andrew Ayuba Butswat, it urged governors from the region to form the Middle Belt Governors’ Forum and pull out of the present Northern Governors’ Forum.

Faulting the provisions of the 1999 Constitution, the group called for the convocation of a sovereign national conference where a new constitution would be made for Nigeria; where each federating unit would have control of its resources and progress at its pace; where the Constitution would ensure justice and equity.

The group noted that some of the traditional titles borne by certain Middle Belt leaders do not have origins in the Middle Belt and called the people to renounce tradition and practices alien to them.

The communiqué reads: “We must be proud of our culture and the pre-dominant religion (Christianity) of our region. No Islamic theocracy shall be accepted in any part of our territory.

“Any constitutional arrangement that seeks to permit Sharia law implementation in any inch of our territory shall be resisted with all resources at our disposal. Religion is an individual choice to make, and must not be imposed.”

Yes you are right.

There is a new awareness that is sweeping the nation. The fact that we are finally acknowledging our differences can either unite us or divide us. I'd like to believe people will be wise enough to embrace the diversity and see its positives. Restructuring is becoming more and more necessary. But as my aunt always says,"Tomorrow is pregnant and no-one knows what she will give birth to." We shall see.

What is Middle Belt? Middle belt of what? You guys better identify yourselves first before seeking national or regional recognition. A people should have a clear identify. Hausa-fulanis (Arewa), Igbos (Ndigbo), Yorubas (Odua), Ijaws, Ibibios, Edos, etc. What constitutes Middle belt? If Nigeria was to cease being a country, will you remain Middle belt or bottom or top belt? Please find identify for yourselves first. As it is today the so called middle belt is skin to a "bat".

Who said that must be the case. They are a people bound together by boundary. That is enough.

The country have so many nations with diametrically opposed views that can't make a whole. It's either the country is restructured or the nations rightly go their separate ways.

EXACTLY! Equity is the only solution. I'm still in the dark on how long it would take to implement "restructuring" & "true federalism" but from all indications that's the only option for the country to have long term peace and progress. People are getting restless something is gonna have to give.

Nonsense! They should stick with the core North. Nobody is imposing islam on them, most of them have willingly accepted Islam. They should accept their identities as Abokis, they're better off. Nonsense people.

The how long of the issue is up in the air but I'm quite certain that the moment the process starts with as much clarity and sincerity as possible, there will be substantial changes that will reset mindsets and see citizens begin to commit more and give their all for their own development. For as long as it seems like local efforts will only be swallowed up by others, the so called 'majority' or a question of 'monkey dey work, baboon dey chop', we will unfortunately remain where we are.

this is a laudable development. the south should applaud this instead of casting aspersions on them. for this country to move forward, the people of like minds must unite against the backward northern oligarchs.

the ipob must play it's hands well to get this group on board as they already have the south south, next is south west.

only diplomacy will help their cause. not name calling. they should get more friends not enemies if they really want to achieve biafra.

they should elect politicians who are favorable to their cause, and with this new group damning the north, they can push for referendum.

it will take time, but they should be diplomatic.
