Former President, Goodluck Jonathan, has insisted that he handed over a Nigeria that was economically viable to his successor, President Muhammadu Buhari.

Jonathan’s remark follows accusation that he left a bad economy for his successor to inherit.

The Buhari-led Federal Government since assumption of power last year, has continued to accuse it’s predecessor of being responsible for the country’s current economic challenges.

But the former President, in his response to these criticisms, maintained that he handed over the best Nigerian government with the largest economy in Africa to Buhari.

In a statement he personally signed, Jonathan said, “I took over a Nigeria that was the second largest economy in Africa with a GDP of $270.5 billion in 2009, I handed over a Nigeria that had grown to become the largest economy in Africa and the 24th largest economy in the World, with a GDP of $574 billion.

“I inherited a Nigeria in which the trains were not working, and handed over a Nigeria in which citizens can safely travel by trains again.

“I inherited a Nigeria that was a net importer of cement, and handed over a Nigeria that is a net exporter of cement.

Is a shame if it is true Jonathan said that, according to records facts and figures Jonathan earned N51trillion from 2010 to 2015 the highest by any government in Nigeria be it military or civilian, it is pertinent to note OBJ earned N27trillion and he was able to pay our debt exit from Paris club, ECA was robust with $45b. and foreign reserve account $40b, during the global melt down of 2010, we never felt it because of OBJ's prudent saving, Yar'adua continued grew the external reserves to $64b and left about $47.7bn, then came Jonathan he plundered everything left $2bn in ECA.Yar'adua earned a total of N9trillion and he too was able to save for the rainy day, so where is Jonathan's savings? Even his finance minister Ngozi Okonji Iweala has openly said it repeatedly that Jonathan failed to save which is why we are where we are today period.

Kudos to you. You nailed it. It's not about Dangote being the richest man in Africa, it's about the overwhelming majority of the people. No Country can thrive without a booming middle class.

Every country tries to grow and maintain a large middle class. It is even worse when a Niger Delta product makes this kind of statement in contemporary Nigeria . Dangote has a lot of investments in Nigeria. so he can be termed a 'homegrown' billionaire & I think that's something worthy of note (if your brother is the richest man in your LG, but with your help, he becomes the richest man in your state, wont you 'brag' about it?) if the investment clime was very unfavourable, he certainly won't have increased his wealth in such leaps & bounds.

countries around the world celebrate their homegrown billionaires & a rise or drop in value of those people is often (not always) an indication of how an economy is doing.

furthermore, Dangote is not a 'software' billionaire (billionaires without solid infrastructures ala Microsoft), his investments are 'solid' & as such heavily dependent on government policies.

There are hundreds of millions of poverty-stricken people in India. Do you also think India being the world's 3rd or 4th largest economy is ''on paper''?

You actually need education, as you obviously equate the ''largest economy'' with ''the richest people'', or ''the most developed country'' etc etc. You need to study the meaning of GDP and how it's calculated. That's a good starting point.
