How do I get to sow using needle and thread?
Will start mine when I get new Terry towels. Is it the same as napkin used in towelling ones hand after washing or baby towel like?

Its the same thing. Terry / towelling is the actual term to denote towels in general. Whether baby towel, hand towel face towel, bath towel! They only come in various thicknesses, so if you are using one that is very thick, you may want to reduce rhe number you use for your booster area so itt is not too bulky.

For the hand sewing, a few tips:

●use a back stitch as it is very strong and comparable to a machine sewn stitch. . (See image no. 3 below for the different types of hand stitches. The 3rd one down is the back stitch)

●Keep your stitch lenghts short ie ( from where the needle goes into the back fabric and when it comes back out the front) . The shorter it is the stronger the seam.

●Keep your thread short! The longer the thread, it starts getting twisted and tangled after a while. Use the lenght. from the tip of your fingers to your elbow as a guide.
( you might want to thread a few needles down before you start sewing)

●I would also advise using a thimble as it helps push the needle through the layers and you avoid bruising your fingers. ( also see images attached on which finger to place the thimble and how to use it images 1 & 2)

●When you attach your elastic. Sew it in a few times over an area of about 1/4 of an inch wide. To make sure it is secure.

●Tie off your thread at least a couple of times at the start and the end of the sewing to secure it. (See image 4)

He he he. Its a very valid question.

You need a watetproof wrap which goes over the nappies. This is just the absorbant part.

I have gotten all my materials ready. The issue now is the cello tape refuse to stay on the carton and the diaper.
Can I just measure the diaper and use it to draw my pattern?

BTW, I called 4 persons to help stretch out the diaper, so I was able to draw the lines, after cutting the carton, it look soooo big compare to yours I'm seeing here.

Please Show me a picture..
What size of diaper did you use?
What is the measurement from the top to bottom of your carton and also the measurement of your widest part across the back?

Yes that sounds about right.
Mine measured 47cm long and 39cm wide, using a size 4.

Quick tip:
When you trace is out on your newspaper or brown paper, add 2 inches or 5 cm on each side of the back flap to make it longer. Before you cut it out.

Also if you find that when you cut and fold it is difficult to align the sides or you end up cutting too much off, you can try this instead:

Measure out the mid section of the nappy( between the legs) and divide by half, After you trace out the pattern to your paper, fold in half before cutting and use the half measurement as a guide. Work on one side, to extend the back flaps by 2" or 5cm then cut the pattern before you unfold it.

Hope this helps.

@Alphahandmaiden,
Unique skill set you have there, can't help but admire your lines, graphics and professionalism.
Skills acquired only through patient and conscious practice. Did you ever offer technical drawing?

They are fine.

I'm still sewing o. I'm sewing the booster zone now. It's only at night I do have enough time but our light is spoilt so it's delaying my work. Hopefully, will be done by weekend.

How is baby doing?

Where have you been hiding?! Glad to hear from you.

If you go to people that sell sewing supplies you shouls be able to get velcro.

As for the waterproof wrap, the cheapest option will be the people that sell normal terry squares or as we call it in niaja: the old school baby napkin, they should have the waterproof pants as well.

There is an online shop i think that sells modern wraps in nigeria if you are in a rush you can google them.

However, We are currently working on something to provide more cloth diapering /nappying options in nigeria both in terms of affordability and variety...... so watch this space. wink

Looks good!

You have no idea, how happy you have made me in knowing that someone actually followed the tutorial! I hope it was easy to follow though with all my plenty grammar!

With the errors, you learn as you go and any subsequent ones will only be better.

Great Job!
