Why Don't Passengers At The Back Seat Use Seatbelts? by Nobody: 9:43am On Aug 14, 2016

Yesterday, I was driving, with my friend riding shotgun. We were stopped by a Lastma official. He told my friend "Oga, why you no wear seatbelt? If you no like am, then go sit for back."

After he made that statement, I realised I've NEVER seen anyone, sitting in the back seats, wearing a seatbelt.

Let's remember the Late Ocholi, and his family, Rest their souls. Anything could happen. Accidents don't affect ONLY the driver and the passenger beside him/her. What baffled me was the statement this Lastma Officer made.

Car manufacturers aren't stup!d. The seatbelts are there for a reason - SAFETY. Let's try to imbibe the habit of using our seatbelts, irrespective of where we sit, in a vehicle.

Well for not using seat belts at the back seat, I will say we tend to forget that there's a belt there.
Or pro'ly because it's not an enforced rule like in the case of a driver using his seat belt.

Well for not using seat belts at the back seat, I will say we tend to forget that there's a belt there.
Or pro'ly because it's not an enforced rule like in the case of a driver using his seat belt.

It has to be due to the widespread orientation that seatbelts are meant to prevent being flung out of the car in event of collision. Having this OT in mind, it is assumed that people in the front seats are at greater risk:- they can hit their head/chest against the dashboard, worst case scenario... 'fly' outta the car via the windscreen. People at the back seat believe they would be protected by the front seats.

I guess they forgot cars tumble like those ones in transformers

It's a common misconception that you're safe riding at the back sit. Most times when I'm riding with my friend(s) and he starts driving like he just got back from gymkhana lesson with Ken Block, I just roll back the sit and tighten the seat belt without uttering a word, same thing applies with me ridding in the back.

Internationally... wearing seat belt is a must for front seat.... back seat it's optional... not against the law. Like someone said earlier... front seat passengers are wayyy more at risk.... the same reason for air bags for front passenger and driver only.

dont lie

there is nothing called internationally when it comes to rear passenger wearing a seat belt

by law all occupants of a car must wear a seat belt

there is more risky for front occupants to fly our of the window screen than the rear passengers

most rear passengers would slam on the back of the front seat but the middle rear passenger might fly through the window screen or end up being in the front

do you know the meaning of international law ?

'a body of rules established by custom or treaty and recognized by nations as binding in their relations with one another'

wearing seat belts is part of road safety laws that are constituted by each individual country road and highway rules, hence they differ country to country eg in UK every child below 12 years old or 135cm tall must be child seat or boster seat, whereas in In some European countries this height limit is 150cm.

The standing rule in my car is irrespective of where you are seating, you MUST wear seat belt. Reason I don't carry more than 3 people at the back. Especially if I'm entering highway.

I have an advice for you

Save up some money and buy a 2016 car and stop displaying your ignorance on Nairaland

I have friends and families who drives older car models and they won't move if you don't strap your seat belts even if you are sitting on the car roof

1. You can get a ticket for it
2. If you get involved in an accident and your passengers die, your ass will be in jail for manslaughter

I drive a 2017 Range Rover evoque, it won't move if your passengers doesn't engage their seat belts, if you don't have passengers, it will move the car is so smart

You mean you scared him with your eyes. #scaryeyez

Back to the topic. With or without seatbelt at the back, you can't hit your head with the windshield when compared to people sitting at the front. The impact is minimal when accident happens. Seatbelt doesn't guarantee you injury free either.

We are taught that seat belt is compulsory for people at the front seat but not those at the back. Personally I don't use seat belts when I sit at the back because I am used it and I am sure about the safety benefits as well. So I think if there is more awareness about the importance, more people would use it.

The back seat is even more dangerous than the front seat. Seat belt is also most needful in the back seat. Experts knows what I am talking about.

Everyone in a moving vehicle is supposed to put on the seat belt. The main purpose of the front seat belt is to prevent impact between the head and the wind-shield and/or dashboard during very abrupt braking.

Rear-seated occupants in Nigeria ignore the seat belt because it is often unlikely to collide with anything harmful(except the front seats) in the event of sudden braking.

Howbeit all occupants of a moving vehicle should put on their seat belts. So says the car designer.

Negligence........as for me, i cant seat in a car without seat belt, be ot front, back or anywhere.
Maybe in a public transport though but private car MBA.............

Even in public transport, i always want to seat in front because of seat belt......if you have experience how effective using seat belt in a car is, you will never want to do away with it

Road officials that call themselves FRSC don't even know about and practice wearing back seatbelts sef
