I would like to know the advantages and disadvantages of having large wheels with small tyre bezels on a car. I have been asking mechanics and some car enthusiasts about having larger wheels but one answer stood out from a mechanic. He said cars with larger wheels tend to have their tyres burst easily so I'm wondering if that's true. I was planning on putting a 17inch rim on my car(225/50/r17 or 205/55/r17) but on hearing this I got scared so I decided to ask the house. Thanks in advance

It has been discussed here before. I guess you are making example of the Range Rover 20s tyre setup, the tyre is very good for road handling and Co but not too good on Roads with potholes and crater, it will spoil the rim and may cause tyre bust.

Because the tyre surface is very slim, when you enter potholes with medium speed, your rim would bend, you loose air, worst case scenario the tyre may get punctured too.

When switching tyre configuration you need to consider your shocks, spring and wheel arc (you won't like the body to touch the tyre constantly it is detrimental).

Well it's a 2000 camry and the tyres that came with it is a 205/65/r15 so after doing a little calculation I found out that the total diameter of the tyre is 64.75cm but with either of the tyres above, I found out that in order to avoid body touch my best bets were either 225/50/r17 which has Total diameter of 65.68cm or 205/55/r17 which has a total diameter of 65.73 which is roughly 1cm different from the stock so I probably won't have body touch issues.my main concern is the tyre burst issue because I see some accords, camrys, bmws with 225/50/r17 and hardly hear tyre bust

My sincere advice is to use the manufacturer' s recommended tyre rim size. This will be seen on the nameplate somewhere around your door (driver'side either front or back).

Using tyre rim size different from the recommended affects the stability of your car in the sense that the centre of gravity is altered .
This makes the vehicle less resistant to fall.

Why do you think the rim will bend? strength has nothing to do with size.

Guy, use manufacturer specification and stop doing unnecessary calculations of diameters. The manufacturer put many things into consideration before coming out with the specified tyre size for your vehicle.

Adv:
-Better handling.
-Low profile tires have higher speed rating.


Disadv:
-They cause drag resulting in higher fuel consumption.

-It distorts your speedometer calibration (you could be going 100km/hr but your guage reads 85km/hr)
-The ride is bumpy (you will feel gallops more)
-Your wheel is at risk of bending/damaging if you enter a gallop.

Summary:
They are not good on Nigeria roads.

I use 275/75/R20. Rim size 20.my brother, its been no picnic.low profile just doest cut it.for the effixy yes. Picks nails easily, very difficult to get spare, just anywhere. One tire on my car is 60k, not even michellin. To avoid stories that touch, stick to smaller tires...if u r R15,keep to your 15.am thinkin of bringing mine back to 17

Large alloy rims are not good for your pocket.

Your rims will bend often with bad roads. You can't fix alloy rims manually.

Your tyres will burst faster on bad roads.

You will do wheel alignment and balancing often..

Whats the gain ?
