Chapter 14

The sudden ringing of desk phone took Devine away from his reports. He currently had reports coming out of his ears, every decision they took needed to be analysed and annotated.
He was happy they had given him the extra resources though. the new Officer Lucas went through files and came up with suggestions that were definitely outside the norm. She was good.

‘Devine’, he said into the phone, as he moved the report he was currently looking at.

‘It’s John here from the lab. Lucas asked for another DNA search to be run on the Child Peter case. Since the databases are updated regularly she thought we should run another search. We have a DNA match for that boy’s case, the reason why I am calling is that it is very odd. The file is sealed, I have never seen this kind of code on a sealed file before’ he continued.

‘It is so odd that I won’t be surprised if I get a call from the Home office shortly just for touching the file’, the pathologist continued.

Devine heard another phone go off in the background in the Doctor’s office.

‘What do you want to..’

‘John someone from the Home Office needs to speak to you urgently regarding a file you just tried to access, a lady’s voice could be heard speaking to the Doctor. Devine heard the lady’s voice come over the phone.

‘Devine, I have to go, I will call you back shortly’

Devine looked at the phone as he put it back on its cradle, a puzzled look on his face, when his phone rang again.

It was his boss’s boss.

‘Devine, I need you in my office in the next two hours, do whatever you need to do. Put the siren on or take the train I want you here with the John the pathologist. We need to talk about the file you are trying to access. The request to access the file came from your unit’ he said, as he ended the call.

#

Eliora was in her office going through the missing dentist’s file when she heard a buzzing coming from her bag.

Her normal phone was on her desk. That meant the phone ringing was the one she had been told would never ring.

She got the phone out of her bag she looked at the screen. Number unknown.

She pressed the answer icon.

‘Durotimi Williams?’ a male voice asked.

‘Yes’ she replied, the dread in her voice very obvious to the caller.

‘You need to come in immediately, someone is trying to access your file' the person on the other end terminated the call.

The call stopped her in her tracks. In the space of one week she had heard her birth name twice.

She had always wondered about the origins of her name, she knew it wasn’t English but she hadn’t probed. Plus she had shortened it to Dee by the time she got to Cobham Hall. Only a few people knew what the Dee actually stood for, the police force she worked for and Margaret.

She had not been too shocked to receive the call from the nursing home she had been forced to put Margaret in, due to her condition.

Margaret was succumbing to old age, she was grateful that she had held on as long as she had. She was the only tie she had to her unknown heritage and birth.

The night she had received the call to come over, she had been very intrigued by the fact that Margaret wanted to talk about her Mother.
But why now?

She had thought to herself, she is going to leave me soon a voice in her heard told her.

She had raced down to the nursing home from her office that night. Hoping that it would not be too late. She had arrived at the home to find Margaret in an excited state.
She was in one of her few and far between lucid states, where she had total recall on events. Once in a while when she had visited she wouldn’t remember who she was and then sometimes she would remember and they would talk about Eliora’s work.

She had not bothered to tell Margaret about the accident or the fact that she had changed her identity, it would have confused her a lot more than she already was.

Margaret had never talked about the time they had both lived at the convent. Eliora had asked so many times, but Margaret had always side tracked the subject.
Eliora never pursued it as she realised that Margaret had given up her life to look after her, she was the closest thing she had to a Mother.

That was also another piece of the puzzle she had never been able to answer, why had Margaret left to look after her all these years?.

She pressed the buzzer on the door of the nursing home and was let in, by the night supervisor.

‘Hello Margaret, how are you this evening?’ Eliora asked, as she had kissed her on the cheek while she picked up a chair and moved it closer to her.
‘Duro, how are you? I haven’t seen you for a while. How is Danny?’ Margaret asked Eliora.

Margaret looked her over, like a Mother would look at their child to check and fret over the child.

‘You have lost weight Duro. Are you eating properly? Or are they over working you at work again?’ she asked her, the worry evident in her eyes.

‘Your Mother would have been proud of what you have become Duro’ Margaret said to her.

‘Did you meet my Mother, Margaret?’ Eliora had asked her, while holding her hand. The same way a child would while listening to an adult narrate an interesting story.

‘I was a novice at the convent then when your Mother turned up one day’ Margaret said.

‘Your Mother turned up on the steps of the convent out of the blue, pregnant and in a lot of distress. She told Mother Teresa, our Mother Superior, that her parents had disowned her. They had disowned when they found out that she was pregnant, most probably by an undesirable person.
Her parents were well to do and well-connected society people, to them the family reputation and name was everything. Having their daughter come back home pregnant with a black bastard was one scandal they were not willing to weather.’

Margaret paused, as she gathered her thoughts and continued her story.

‘Your Mother Duro, had spent a lot of time in Nigeria studying the ritual and beliefs of Ifa. She had studied at the school of Oriental and African Studies. If she had lived she would have been one of the pre-eminent non Nigerian authorities on ancient Yoruba beliefs. As far as she was concerned the Yoruba creation myth should have been up there along with the ones like that of the Greeks.'

'She was doing her PHD and decided that she wanted to do it there in Nigeria at Ile-Ife, the cradle of civilisation according to her and her research.’

‘Duro, are you sure you are eating properly, you have lost a lot of weight’ Margaret said to her.

In the same breath, Margaret started her story again.

‘What happened to your Mother over there, we will never know. Some of her journals are in the loft of the cottage.’ Margaret told her.

Eliora looked at Margaret in shock, Margaret had kept the journals from her. Why?

Margaret continued.

‘What I do know, is the minute she set foot in the convent strange things started happening. I always felt a presence in her room even though I never saw anyone in there.’ Margaret paused.

‘Can I have a drink of water please?’ Margaret asked Eliora.

Eliora got up from her chair and went to get her a glass of water from the side table in Margaret’s room.

‘Something followed her from Ile-Ife, that is what I believe. Even though I was in the convent, we Irish believe that there are some strange things out there that can’t always be explained’ she said, as she looked at Eliora.

‘There were inexplicable changes in temperature and I heard her speaking to someone, but there was never anyone else in the room.’

‘What I have come to believe over the years, is that the thing was dormant and your Mother made it aware or animated due to something she did. Something must have happened for it to travel over water and continents to stay with her.’

‘Your grandfather once he found out where she was staying, gave the convent a big donation. Mother Teresa accepted it as the Convent was in dire need of funds at the time’.

‘Mother Teresa arranged for the child to be adopted once the baby was born. Your Mother had decided to give the child up for adoption immediately after the birth, so that she could reconcile with her parents.’

'That was the condition of their reconciliation with her, give up the child and you would be welcomed back into the family. She loved her family so she decided to give up her child for the love of her parents and money.'

‘I want to sleep Duro, I am feeling tired’ Margaret said, as she tried to get comfortable in her bed.

‘Two couples had shown interest in the potential baby’, Margaret continued.

‘Mother Teresa stayed and kept in contact with the two couples just in case the first couple rejected the child.

The night you were born, there was a very strange storm. There hasn’t been a storm like it before or ever since. It was so strange that even BBC weather carried it on the news as a weird freaky storm.’

‘It was like two opposing forces were battling it out for supremacy, the minute she went into labour. I will never forget what I saw that night. It will live with me till the day I die.’

‘Your mother gave birth to three babies that night’ Margaret said, as she stopped talking, staring at Eliora.

Wow!

Three what, what happened to the rest? Uncle T.J and mama T.J......whats your story?

Hypothetically speaking........say Eliora is able to see T.J because of the blood relation.

Did I read about Uncle what what's parents, I don't remember. Make I go check.

Trestu, this author. I said update not blast my head angry tongue

Lleigh:

Illuminated by the sparks coming off the paper weight, near the Mother’s table, was what looked like a half human half demon being, the head had two stubby horns, the skin on its face was covered in boil like lumps, the lumps slithered across the torso like snails in a race, it’s eyes glowing red as they stared at her, grinning at her lasciviously, the lower half of his body where human legs would be had the legs of a goat.
The dispersing sparks on the paper weight made the image diminish and vanish.

This is what Maggy saw? Jesus! This ^^ thing's interest was the girl that had sought refuge in the convent. Issokay
