omigiekiel: Degree in Medicine (MBBS/M.D) for Physician scientist Degree in Medical Laboratory Science (BMLS) for Medical scientist. Both work together for Clinical and research purpose. The title physician scientist is obsolete in a Nigerian setting 1 Like |

nelszx: A physician scientists is a medical doctor (MBBS) who after graduating from medical school specialises as a pathologist( a doctor) in laboratory medicine. A branch of medicine and surgery. He intepretes test results and interacts with others doctors for progressive management plan. While the Medical laboratory scientists or technician( in some cases) are Bsc holders in Medical laboratory science (B.mls) who carry out test results on the orders of a doctor. They both work together for the betterment of the patients.

Hassanckg: Yes it is. You have to write JAMB Again and gain admission into Medicine or come back as a Direct Entry into Medicine as a 2nd degree. They're certain creteria you must meet in both |

dhevid: Anyone can be a consultant in any field, but in the hospital the consultant statues refers to the relationship between a Doctor and a patient. So only a Doctor can become a consultant. Please note not every doctor is a consultant 2 Likes |

Oogway: There's no where in the world a MLS is referred to as a technician (they are 2 different categories and they (MLT) do not possess a Bachelors degree in Medical laboratory science). A technician is a diploma holder from school of health technology. No doctor can ORDER a MLS on a test to be done rather it's REQUESTED. A doctor can order fellow doctors but but when a laboratory investigation is involved, he requests their services hence a REQUEST form for that analysis is filled not an ORDER form (Use of English) 4 Likes |
Re: Medical Laboratory Scientists Forum by Oogway: 10:50pm On Jan 28, 2017 |
nelszx: Be guided in your statements, "ORDER" is a synonym for "REQUEST." MLS was only but recently made into a full blown degree. The techician post was hasty generalization and I'm sorry for that. 1 Like

nelszx: Here is what Google and Wikipedia says about Medical laboratory science and technologist. In certain countries like Canada the Bachelor degree in Medical laboratory science is called a technologist and in most other countries it's used interchangeably eg USA

Re: Medical Laboratory Scientists Forum by nelszx: 1:57am On Jan 29, 2017 |
Oogway: Whether it is a synonym or not both are different based on context (noun or verb). No doctor I repeat no doctor can order a MLS into doing what is good for the betterment of the patient. A doctor can order a fellow doctor but when the services of another professional is needed he requests for it cos he so desires of it. Yes MLS only few years back blown into a degree just like every other course has its humble beginning as Medicine started as health attendant and now MBBS degree so it will only take a little time we'll get there. Everyone is guilty of hasty generalisation so no qualms.

Re: Medical Laboratory Scientists Forum by Oogway: 8:38am On Jan 29, 2017 |
nelszx: 1stly, There's no big deal weda order or request. A doctor orders a test to be done, or he request a test result. 2ndly Medicine has always been medicine from the ancient times, they were only 3 learned professions; The Physician, The Scribe(Lawyer), The priest. Everyother profession was referred to as Phylosophy and grew from there. Please make good to check that up: the origin of the title Doctor (both Academic and medical). Medical laboratory science grew from medicine, in the past doctors carried out laboratory investigations themselves, but due to the fact that it was too stressful having to carry out a laboratory test, and inteprete it and come to a diagnosis and therapy. The brought in some groups of semi illiterates (what today we now have as MLS) to help them out with running of the test which they saw as having need less skill and was less noble for doctors to do. Hence the word ORDER for a test as the were working under doctors, but in the modern day Healthcare were there's harmony and to promote unity the word ORDER is becoming obsolete, and REQUEST is being preferred. Although some countries still uses that term. #Back to my story. Over the years, This semi illetrates started acquring more and more training and went on more research and started gaining independence from the doctors who taught them this craft and inorder to meet with the ever unending modernization of healthcare care and advance medical practice. MLS was upgraded into a diploma and later a Degree as it is now and some countries Doctorate Degree. Or what we call MLS.D or D.MLS. #REFERENCES: History of Laboratory practice. Origin of Medical laboratory Science Difference between a pathologist and a Laboratory Sciencist . Hope we good 1 Like |

danilmo: Soon you will find out just WATCH THIS SPACE ..... In no distant time it will be CRYSTAL CLEAR Things evolve dude, like @Oogway said it's (MLS) going through a stage of metamorphosis worldwide (Apprenticeship > Diploma > Bachelors degree > Doctorate degree (MLS.D, D.MLS, DCLS) > ). Very soon and I mean very soon you will find out. God spare our lives 3 Likes |

danilmo: You sound like a cry baby.....Do you sense any desperation in the way I sounded? BTW I'm not interested in a sit level with MBBS holders neither do I choose to want to be a "MEDICAL" doctor; they have found their niche and I have found mine. You can keep your jamb form for your kids and possibly siblings (if you have any) I'm not interested. I just gave you a clue of what to expect and you are feeling threatened already. I'm talking about MLS you are talking about MBBS like you saw MBBS on my post FYI I'm not giving myself hope cos it's already happening, only a matter of days, weeks, months or year(s) it will start in Nigeria so be calm and WATCH THE SPACE. Before you add another meaning to my post, I'm not talking down on doctors I have many who are my friends (Great people). My take home point is JUST WATCH THIS SPACE 5 Likes |

Pls i really wish to know more. I need someone to put me through. Could you pls drop your number? Before taking the Ascp(international) exam for Internationally trained Medical Laboratory Scientists, you'll need to evaluate your credential through World education service and then send a copy to Ascp in the United States. As long as you are well grounded in all the sub-fields like Haematology,Cyto/Histopath, Med.Micro, Clinical Chem, BGS, you are good to go. A colleague has started the procedure already and is taking mock tests on their website. There is an acute shortage over there and average pay of BioMedical Scientists/MLS in states like California is about $80,000(about 13.5 million naira)/yr. Do the maths. [/quote] 1 Like |
