What about the stress of changing gears do you think, it's wise for a lady in Lagos traffic?
Babe, if you call simple changing gears "stress" then you are better off jumping molue daily...
You dont need a car to drive, rather you need a car to drive. And that is not available for now.

In my opinion, this not a question that you will get reliable answer from this forum ask your brothers, relatives, other car owners around you, and most importantly an experience mechanic to guide in your decision. All the best.

what makes women different from men, that we treat them like handicaps and leggicaps?

Have waited 4 this for like 3 months now, just bought a manual transmission, Honda baby boy 2002, wanted auto tranny initially but had to go 4 d manual cos of it's neat exterior n interior, my friends feels it nice since am still learning to drive. It's fun though I bashed it while negotiating a bend in my gate. Tnx 4 ur inputs and encouragement as regards a manual tranny.

I recently got a 2001 model too with manual transmission and the speed is impressive. Enjoyed reading this thread.

I am about to get a car, and the option available to me is to get a manual car which is 2 million lesser or I go for the same car but the automatic version.
I am quite concerned because of the price of the car but my colleagues are advising me not to even think about the manual car because of traffic. I am of the opinion that I can learn how to drive the manual car and not get too stressed while driving.
Please I need advice from experienced drivers, is driving a manual car that terrible in Lagos?
Manual takes time and practice to get to a level where it's as easy as driving an automatic. But if you drive consistently, you'll get there. For me, when i'm driving manual, i dont worry about clutch or changing gears, those things happen subconsciously for me. My mind is always else where when i'm driving until an annoying road user or incident brings me back though my eyes are always on the road. That's how easy it is for me. Those talking about car stalling in the middle of the road or rolling back into cars behind you or burning clutch are just poor at driving manual. They are still learning. But if you have extra N2m, you can get the auto. But think of what that money can do for you at these Buhariferous times

Dats nice, baby boy of manual transmission is not common, I appreciate the reception I get when my car is parked due it's rare nature, the speed is really impressive and runs smoothly. I got mine 4 #650,000 though fairly used, still feels it's expensive though, how much did u buy urs?

again, modern manuals are so smooth you'd love them. They are no longer like those of 504 and Volvo our fathers drove. My 75 year old aunt prefers manual to auto and thinks autos are more complicated. manual's whats she's been driving since her youth.

This is a tough decision, considering what you will be saving if go for manual. I have both manual and Automatic, with Lagos taffic Automatically will be okay for you as a lady. Ever since I bought my manual car, I refused to take it to Redeemed camp, but I tried it last Friday and I regretted it. The traffic on that road almost finish me . I have decided not to use the manual car this week , because I need to recover from the pains of Friday.

Lol @ d saying * yam leg*. Well i own a manual recently. My first ride, mot by choice tho. It was much cleaner and cheaper. I think is quite aiit., i bet it improves IQ as well cuz u have to calculate i think. Only disadvantage is traffic. Really terrible and i live in benin city. So to avoid yam leg/thigh strain. U should opt for automatic cuz lagos traffic is terrible.
Ama look out now if am growing yam leg now#lol, Thanks for d heads up.

I wonder why some people are feeling like Champions because they drive manual cars. cheesy

I drove manual car for over 5 years, so I don't see any biggie. Driving auto doesn't make you a lazy person pls! It's all about preference.

Place a manual and auto car side-by-side for sale, chances are very high that you'll get a buyer for auto car first.

Why should I be stressing my right hand and left foot almost simultaneously? When there is stress-free alternative? Nah! wink smiley

If you buying for pleasure it's worth it, if you buying for price you will regret it. Driving a manual in Lagos traffic isn't easy, you are not only concentrating you are also calculating
Clutch, change gear to move quickly depress gear to quickly brake, notice that most traffic hits of bumper to bumper it's mostly manual slamming into others.

Manual breaking record back to back
I've been hit from the rear thrice. the cars had all bee autos. absent minded drivers who forgot their cars were in drive or slept off being the wheel in traffic.
I drive a manual and don't even know when i change gears. its like second nature. my hand just moves without a tot going into it.

Its best to start with manual , only then you can say you have mastered the art of driving. Moreover, automatic trans come with expensive repairs

Seems like a lot of physical and mental work. I don't have strength to be shifting gears. Automatic does all the work for you. I can't imagine driving a car with manual transmission in Lagos traffic... Gear 1, neutral, gear 1, gear 2, neutral... Kill me now!

That is why I said buy for pleasure. Even if manual gives prostrate cancer, infertility we still have die hard fans who would buy. I am a stick shift fanboy even when driving autos and I brake I still step on invisible clutch, it's part of my life now. But I have to still say the truth "DRIVING STICK SHIFT IN NIGERIAN TRAFFIC" is like cooking ofada rice for a party. You know how hard it is to pick the rice, wash the rice, cut the pomo etc etc

just a hundred k more. it was sent in from Canada, used for a few months by the dealer before I got it. its true that its not easy to come by. after reading reviews about the auto transmission and timing belt issues with the auto, I decided to go for manual. Fuel consumption is also very low even with the A/c on. with my fast driving, I go about 470/500 km with full tank (a/c on)

Don't spend an extra 2M to buy an automatic transmission.
Although an AMT car would be more ideal than a MNT car, but the cost difference is too much.
You will eventually get used to the manual and it would feel normal.
Just assume you had no choice e.g it was a gift. Simple.
Paying almost 5m for a new Kia Rio in this economy is not a wise decision.

I totally agree with you. OP, one more thing you should consider is your pockets too. Consult experts on your car model about the the maintenance. as someone stated above, maintenance of auto is usually higher than manual, especially with transmission issues.

I have one here you can shift and if it comes at a low price I bet you will gladly jump into one without looking at an Audi tt.

The pleasure of going through the gears, the growl will make all those imaginary pains vamoose. Today's manuals buttery

I bet a used one of this is almost the same price of the Auto OP in looking at (excluding shipping and duty), So with the key in you pocket jump in, or walk away?

with thus your statement you clearly don't know how to drive manual . The only time u probably drove a manual was in driving school ( those clumsy teachers, that don't even know the tricks of up shifting or down shifting .).

hello sir. your post caught my attention. I want to know if it's OK to downshift from say like gear 5 to neutral and then gear 1. does it have any negative effect on the clutch or something?
summary.... must I downshift the same way I went up I. e from 5 to 4 to 3 to 2 to 1?
still a learner though and I get quite confused with this aspect. thanks sir.

No you dont need to downshift in that order, there is a sync between driver and car which enables you to determine what gear to use. The RPM i change gear is 3 and the earliest is around 2.2 depending on what i am doing.

depending on the speed of the car after you slow down and about to takeoff, that is what will determine the gear you will take off on, i dont expect a good driver to take off at gear 4 or 5 when the speed is just 40km/h and the rpm is 1500. So when slowing down and you change gear from 5 to any lower gear immediately has no effect on the gear. (will not damage anything)

but when you are around 80km/h, and you disengage the gear (clutching down) and re=engage gear 1 at same speed the car will go to a state called engine braking (rev jumps up and engine makes loud continuous sound and car begins to slow down), engine braking is ok as long as you dont always let the rpm jump to or close to the red zone

ok lets take it one at a time. its perfectly safe to switch from gear 5 straight to any lower gear of your choice, its the current car speed that will determine whether engine will be affected or not. example if you are doing 80km/h in gear 5 and you decelerate to 20km/h and you intend to cruise or accelerate again, it is safe to switch from gear 5 straight to gear 2 you dont necessarily have to switch to 4 then switch to 3 then switch to 2. Nod your head if you got this grin

Ehen! this is much better, been nodding since, lol. my driving school Instructor was the one who filled my head with downshifting the way you came up and it affects me a lot so I ditched it and tried doing things my way, was just worried if I was doing it wrongly but now I know I'm not. thanks for the clarification.

but I guess same can't be said for upshifting right? from 1 to neutral to 3 to neutral to 5 is a no abi?

your addition of neutral to the mix is quite funny, reminds me of the first day i actually played arcade game with steering wheel and manual gear. it would even be more funny watching you change gear in 1 minute grin

I change gear in nano seconds, so i dont know whether i even touch neutral at all, you disengage gear with clutch and switch to desired side and engage gear again i doubt if it goes through neutral (though i may be wrong).

So onto next lesson
you can move a car at rest with gear 1 or 2, but the design is to move with gear 1, when you become a pro, you will ditch gear 1 especially in traffic. Gear 3, 4, 5 to infiniti will not move the car but stall the engine.

Now when upshifting you can skip gears but to be on a safer side i found that for a five speed manual, gear 4 is the most useless gear i have ever come across tongue it serves me no important purpose so you can move your gear in this order 1 to 2 to 3 you can skip 4 and jump onto 5, i have not driven manual gear with settings more than 5, iknow benz, bmw and some high end sports car have upto 6 manual gear settings.

When you skip an important gear like jumping from 1 straight to any higher gear (3,4,5 to infiniti), you are stressing the engine as you will notice the car doesnt get upto speed as intended besides some gear to me are of importance

Gear 1= The gear of unlimate momentum
Gear 2= Keeping the momentum stable
Gear 3= The baba of all gear, used in showcasing the prowess of your engine if you intend to
a) overtake
b) bringout the power in the engine (incase you intend to street race)
Gear 4= Owanbe
Gear 5= To maintain the maximum engine and gear power (especially during highway driving)
